Planted in the Russian River Valley on a gently rolling hillside in 1920, the Starr Road Ranch Vineyard, formerly known as the Moratto Vineyard, is organically farmed, consistently producing low yields of the highest quality fruit year after year. We are excited to continue our work with this legendary vineyard site, and share the resulting wines with you.
Klinker Brick Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Sixteen months on French oak encouraged extraordinary dry and complex structure layered with aromas of blackberry, cassis and clove. Flavors of cherry, currant, leather and a hint of black tea couple well with the traditional and pronounced French oak.

Pairs great with lamb and cheese.

Rubus Old Vine Zinfandel Lodi 2014

Lodi, American Viticulture Area (AVA) – The Lodi AVA is located in the northern end of the San Joaquin Valley, Central Valley California, east of the San Francisco Bay. Lodi has warm days and cool nights, similar to the Mediterranean climate. The lower temperatures that occur in Lodi result in fruit with good acidity. A wide range of soils are found in the Lodi AVA, but they generally are deep, loamy, sandy, rocky soils similar to that found in southern Rhone valley.

The Lodi appellation totals almost one half million acres, and the approximately eight hundred growers farm roughly 90,000 acres. Lodi produces more Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and Zinfandel than any other wine region in California, but it is probably best known for its old vine Zinfandel. The vines are often head trained giving them a classic old world appearance.

Zinfandel – The Zinfandel grape is a hearty variety that produces grapes with high sugar levels, often resulting in wines with a high alcohol content. Thought to be a relative of Primitivo that is found in southeast of Italy (the boot heel), Zinfandel can be made into a wide range of wine styles, including White Zinfandel, light or full bodied red wines, and even late harvest desert style wine. However Zinfandel, especially Old Vine Zinfandel from Lodi, is usually made into a full bodied, spicy red wine with characteristics of red fruit, raspberry, and cherry.

Produced in the heart of Lodi AVA.

Rubus Zinfandel Lodi is made from 98% Zinfandel + 2% Cabernet Sauvignon
Bottled after aging in French and American oak for 9 months.

Rubus Zinfandel Lodi presents with ruby red in color, with red fruit, raspberry, and spice on the nose. This wine is medium in body, with notes of ripe cherry, cedar box, cinnamon, anise, black pepper, and hint of smoke on the palate. It has a long, silky finish.

Selected by Fran Kysela MS.

Gamba Estate Old Vines Zinfandel 2012

The original and flagship wine for GAMBA Vineyards and Winery from our family Estate Vineyard in the Russian River Valley planted in 1900.

Tasting Notes: Deep garnet in color with a cherry preserve nose, highlighted by red plum and dried cranberry, this wine promises a classic expression of Zinfandel on the palate. Beginning with an appealing mix of spicy berry aromas and flavors, the wine expands into medium to full bodied ripe briary fruit of plum, black cherry, earth minerals, and white pepper.

The texture is silky smooth, with elegant tannins, integrated with a subtle brown spice. The long cherry kirsch-filled finish is punctuated by firm but gentle tannins. With ample acidity, the balanced framework, effusive fruit, and a smooth lingering finish, this wine will drink wonderfully for several years to come.

Fenocchio DOCG Barolo 2010

Fenocchio DOCG Barolo 2010 is 100 percent Nebbiolo.

Claudio and Albino Fenocchio own 10 hectares of vineyards. This Barolo comes from a blend of Bussia in Monforte d'Alba and Castellero in Barolo. The soil in Bussia is helvetian ( limestone and clayey blue marl) which contributes much to the fullness and excellent aging potential of these wines. The Castellaro vineyard is of tortonian soil (blue marl and sandstone mixed with sand) which gives a velvety mouth feel and exceptional aromatics. The vines are an average of 30 years old.

Color: Ruby red with garnet reflections
Bouquet: Rich bouquet with hints of blueberries, roses and liquorice.
Taste: Densely structured with a full, complex flavor. It is an elegant wine with firm tannins and good acidity that will become velvety and graceful with age. This wine is generous and bold. The finish is long and lingering.

Obelisco Estate Syrah "Les Gosses Vineyard" Red Mountain 2010

Obelisco Estate Syrah Red Mountain - 2010 si made from 100% Syrah

Deep purple red, almost black color. Classic spicy sausage aromas dominant, followed by blackberry, dark cherry and dried blueberry fruit with hints of white pepper, cloves, licorice, dried herbs and vanilla. On the palate this wine enters sweet and full bodied and with spiced meat, ripe blackberry, dark cherry and vanilla toast. The mouthfeel is soft on the entry, lush in the mid-palate and finishes long with a dash of tartness to remind you it is Syrah and some tannins to remind you it is from Red Mountain.

"Sandy tannins wrap around the meaty boysenberry and black pepper flavors in this sturdy style. The fruit and spice notes linger on the extended finish. Best from 2015 through 2018. 293 cases made. - HS"

"This is as pure as a wine can be—all Syrah from a single clone and single vineyard. Dark and sappy, it sends up whiffs of smoked meat and cassis, wrapping those flavors in streaks of fresh cut tobacco. Tannins are ripe and firm, with hints of black olive. The wine is well-built, balanced and lingers generously. - PG"

Thorn Clarke Terra Barossa Shiraz 2010

Thorn Clarke Terra Barossa Shiraz 2010 is made from 100 percent Shiraz.

HARVEST DATE: March 2010
BOTTLING DATE: March 2011
pH: 3.45
TA: 6.87g/l
ALCOHOL: 14.5%
VINTAGE CONDITIONS: The 2010 vintage followed good winter rainfall in 2009 and allowed the vineyards to commence the 2010 season with good soil moisture levels. This soil moisture, combined with moderate weather conditions throughout most of the growing season allowed for good fruit set and canopy development. In summary an excellent vintage, with very little extreme weather resulting in fantastic color and flavor in red varietals, and excellent acid and flavor
profiles for whites.
WINEMAKING: The grapes are crushed and de-stemmed into fermenters. Yeast is added immediately once in fermenter and the ferments are pumped over twice
daily to maximise color, tannin and flavour extraction. Cooling is used to ensure ferments remain in the 22-25 degrees Celcius range which will allow the fruit to display maximum fruit expression. Pressing then occurs approximately seven days after crushing and the wine is then put into predominantly American oak to mature.
BARREL AGING: 12 months in American oak.
TASTING NOTES: The color is a deep inky purple. The nose is a complex mixture of ripe blackberry and plum fruit with a dash of creamy vanillin oak. The palate is medium to full bodied which starts with some sweet plummy fruit, the flavor then builds in the palate to provide an explosion of raspberry flavors. There is some lovely mouth coating tannins which combine with dark chocolate oak and fruit to provide a great depth and length of flavor.

Vinsacro Dioro Rioja 2010

SALE

Dark ruby color. Aromas of cherry, currant, vanilla bean and hint of tar. Full-bodied, with flavors of cherries, cocoa powder and oak. A touch of sweetness on entry with a little bit of air with soft tannins that are starting to integrate well.

The latest step in the project is Vinsacro (formerly Valsacro) Dioro. The earlier Valsacros were made from a field selection of the older vineyards. Now, thanks to the new facility Amador has been able to build an upmarket version of Vinsacro (formerly Valsacro) with a four-stage selection process that includes an initial field selection of the fruit followed by a second table selection as the grapes come into the winery. After fermentation wine from selected tanks is transferred to new French oak barrels for 12-14 months of barrel age. Finally, the best barrels are set aside for Dioro and the remainder used to "upgrade" the normal Vinsacro.

Vinsacro Dioro is a blend of grapes from 100+ year old "vidau" vineyards where many varieties were planted together in the same plot.

Today the grapes are harvested and vinified separately. The final blend depends on the vintage but typically it's Tempranillo (50%), Garnacha (20%) and remaining 30% is a mix of mainly Graciano (10%) & Mazuelo (10%) with a little of Monastrell (5%) & Bobal (5%).

Review:

"Bright purple. Potent dark berry aromas are complicated by notes of vanilla, pipe tobacco and woodsmoke. Fresh and precise, with densely packed black raspberry and cola flavors that opening nicely with air. Gentle tannins build slowly on the clinging finish, with the raspberry and smoke notes echoing. - Josh Raynolds"
- Steven Tanzer ‘s International Wine Cellar (September / October 2014), 91 pts

The 2010 Vinsacro Dioro opens to an explosion of flowers and ripe blueberries that is very perfumed. It feels quite modern and aromatic with well-integrated oak and a luscious palate. This is produced from a field blend they call Vidau, which, in their case it is approximately 50% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo and a myriad of other grapes like Graciano and even Monastrell. The wine aged in brand new French oak barrels for 17 months, and it's clearly a high-end wine with aspirations. 35,000 bottles. Wine Advocate 92 Points

Xavier Vignon Chateauneuf Du Pape Rouge 2010

Richer, fuller and denser is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape, which is composed of 65% Grenache and the rest equal parts Mourvedre and Syrah. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by abundant notes of black fruits, licorice, lavender, Provencal herbs as well as a meaty richness. -Wine Advocate Robert Parker 91 Points

Xavier Vignon, along with Philippe Cambie, are probably the two most highly renowned oenologists in Chateauneuf du Pape as well as some of the surrounding Cotes du Rhone regions. Vignon’s office and laboratory are next to the Auto Route A7, in the same complex as Chateau Husson. He is the consultant for such well-known domaines as Raymond Usseglio, Jerome Quiot, Beaurenard, La Nerthe, Mont Redon, Marcoux, Grand Veneur and La Gardine. I tasted through the new and upcoming Xavier Vignon releases. The blend of Xavier Vignon’s Chateauneuf du Pape can vary considerably. Vignon told me that it is a selection from nearly 120 different parcels in the appellation. Fashioned from the best fruit from old vines planted in the finest parcels is the Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Anonyme. Xavier Vignon is not going to release the 2007 Anonyme (his greatest Chateauneuf du Pape to date) until 2013 so readers have a chance of getting some of this production. I tasted three vintages of this cuvee with Vignon.

Cape Barren Old Vine Shiraz 2011

Color: Vibrant and deep; vivid crimson-purple
Aroma: Pungent mix of ripe black fruits, spice, licorice and anise enhanced by superbly integrated French oak nuances.
Palate: Full bodied and silky smooth, the highlights are lifted black currant and licorice, combined with mocha and swirls of five-spice characters. The elegant yet rich flavours are persistent, balanced with harmonious French oak and supple tannins leading to a lasting luscious finish.

Fermentation of each parcel of fruit occurred separately in upright static fermenters at around 25-27°C, and remained on skins for about 10 days. The wines were pumped over skins twice per day, and pressed at around 2 degrees Baume. One-third of each wine was added to new French oak hogsheads to complete fermentation, and the balance was added to older oak when dry. The wines were finally blended a month prior to bottling.

DeLille Grand Ciel 2010

DeLille Grand Ciel 2010 100% Grand Ciel Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

DeLille Grand Ciel 2010  presents with a deep and dark fruit-scented nose of black cherries and black currants layered with lavender, hoisin spice and earthy loam notes. The bouquet reveals anise seed, cedar and Provence herbs as well. The flavor mirrors this complexity with Bing cherries, raspberries, red currants, cedar spice, toasty meringue and pie dough. Structurally this wine showcases the pedigree of the vineyard. There is a wonderful combination of concentration, elegance and a sense of perfect ripeness. The fruit and spices bask in youthful tannins continuing to an endless finish -- I love the mouthwatering savory nature of this wine. It is built to age.

"Dark berries and minerals on the vibrant, sweet nose. Intensely flavored but light on its feet, conveying an impression of serious power without any excess weight. Dark berry fruit flavors are complicated by subtle soil tones and strong graphite minerality. This wonderfully concentrated, seamless wine finishes with noble tannins and outstanding palate-staining persistence. A good bit of this material is declassified into DeLille's D2 and Four Flags bottlings. Wonderfully suave Washington cabernet for extended cellaring.- Stephen Tanzer"
