45 years old vines
Alcohol: 14,5º

Volatile acidity: 0,73 g./l.
PH: 3,53
Free SO2: 28 mg./l.
Reducing sugars: 1,3 g./l.

The wines intended for the Reserva de la Familia come from a selection of old vines which meet a number of features such as a good location, good sun exposure and barely fertile soil which ensures a low yield.

Red cherry high notes. Clean nose, with good intensity. Memories of ripe fruit, preserve (jam) on a background of fine wood, with a marked balsamic (eucalyptus, pine) character. Powerful on the palate, dense, structured, with good tannins. The finish is broad, complex, long and persistent.

This wine's versatility allows us to savour its personality and character with classics such as roast lamb or pork and gamey stews. But it also blends masterfully with mushrooms, truffles, black chocolate, nuts, cream-based or spicy dishes etc.

This particular wine and vintage was elected "Regional Trophy winner" at the World Wine Award 2014 by the Decanter Magazine. Here are the tasting notes from this review: "A bright, modern nose of blackcurrant and morello cherry, elegant new oak, mineral notes and lovely floral purity. Ripe and fresh palate with firm but suave tannins and a savory character overlaid with powerful smoky aromatics of roasted oak and licorice. Impressive and resounding on the finish."

Reviews:

Dark and oaky with some power and richness, but savory rather than sweetish. The finish is frankly tannic, but fairly well balanced.   -James Suckling 91 Points

"The 2009 Finca Sobreno Reserva – Seleccion Especiale is a blend of the estate’s best vineyard (over 50 years in age) and sees half the fruit aged in 14 months in new American oak, the remainder in used oak. It has a lifted floral bouquet of dark berries, briary and dried violets that is well-defined and seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent entry of dark cherries, balsamic, a hint of orange peel and cloves. There is good structure and focus present here, with a clean fresh, focused finish. It is very fine and very elegant for a Toro red. Drink now-2019+"

(sourced from old vines and aged in American oak for 14 months):  Opaque purple.  Deeply pitched aromas of blackberry, violet, smoky oak and mocha.  Then sweet, broad and lush on the palate, with explosive dark berry flavors complicated by vanilla, mocha and a floral nuance.  Finishes with big, broad, supple tannins and superb length.  This exotic, large-scaled wine shows surprising energy and focus for its heft.--Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 92 Points

Winery: Sobreno

The Finca Sobreno Estate
In the early 90's, a group of Rioja winemakers became interested in Toro, convinced that top class wines could be made from the local Tempranillo clone known as Tinta de Toro. The combination of Rioja know-how, modern technology, strict attention to detail and fine old-vines plantings has led Bodegas Sobreño to almost instant success in Spain and on the international scene. Bodegas Sobreño was founded in 1998. Just 7 years later, Bodegas Sobreño has become one of the best-known wineries in the region.  The winery owns 1,400 barriques (primarily American oak) and boasts a production capacity of 500,000 bottles/year.
The principal winemaking consultant is Manuel Ruiz Hernández, one of Rioja's most respected enologists.

"One of best new estates in Toro; reds show intense fruit."
- Anthony Dias Blue's pocket guide to wine 2006

The Finca Sobreno Vineyards
Finca Sobreño currently owns 80 hectares (197 acres) of vineyard, of which about half are vines over 30 years old and divided in many small parcels. In addition, the winery controls 155 hectares of independently owned old-vines plots. The vineyards are 100% Tinta de Toro, pruned "en vaso" (bush vines), as well as double cordon Royat in the newer plantings. Soil types are alluvial with a thick clay subsoil, and a mix of sand and gravel. Yields are quite low, averaging about 4,000 kg/hectare.

Morambro Creek Cabernet 2012

Morambro Creek Cabernet is 100 percent Cabernet

Deep purple in color. A rich elegant nose of cassis with overtones of vanilla and coffee. Lush, ripe palate dominated by black fruits, cherry and chocolate. Full bodied with savory, integrated fruit tannins and persistent finish.

Vintage Overview: 2012 was a very good season with predominantly mild, dry days. Yields were generally low and this did result in some excellent parcels of fruit being harvested. Vine-balance was carefully monitored, resulting in fruit that demonstrates the vibrancy and fruit-derived characters that we strive for in our wines.

Winemaking at Morambro Creek is very traditional and labour intensive. Oak maturation takes place using 35% new French barrels. This blend was put together using select barrels from our family  estate that best demonstrate the intensity of our fruit balanced by integrated oak.

Total Acidity: 6.6 g/L
pH: 3.49

Tamarack Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Tamarack Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 86% Cabernet Sauvignon • 6% Merlot • 8% Cabernet Franc

Crushed gently and dropped by gravity into 1.5 ton bins, cold soaked for 24 to 72 hours, then inoculated with a variety of yeasts, hand-punched and pressed directly to barrel where the wine finishes both primary and secondary fermentations. The individual lots of wine that compose the Cabernet Sauvignon are kept separate for at least one year before they are blended.

A warm summer led to an early start to harvest, followed by a stretch of lower than average temperatures in late September that slowed ripening so grapes hung longer without sugars skyrocketing, providing balance, more flavor development and concentration. A long but successful harvest!

Full bodied with black currant jam, honey glazed dates and black peppered seasoned T-bone steak aromas intertwined with piercing boysenberry, rosemary rack of lamb, balsamic, blue cheese, bacon wrapped figs and intriguing tannins extended out over an intricate and balanced finish.

Broad and generous, with expressive black cherry, plum, smoke and pepper flavors on a sleek structure, a light veil of tannins wrapping up the long finish. Drink now through 2023. 2,500 cases made. - Wine Spectator 92 Points

Still seeming to need time to open up and stretch its legs, this wine offers high-toned aromas of graphite, caramel, vanilla and plum. It's full and plush in feel with tart fruit flavors and a finish that glides. - Wine Enthusiast 92 Points & Editors' Choice

Thorn Clarke William Randell Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Thorn Clarke William Randel Cabernet is made from 100 percent Cabernet

Deep red in colour. The nose is lifted and expressive with lovely Christmas cake and mint characters along with black olives and tobacco leaf adding complexity. The palate is medium to full bodied with blueberry and hints of cassis as the primary fruit flavours. The palate has great poise with the vibrant fruit, spicy French oak and fine tannin structure all wonderfully balanced, and the wine finishes with great length of fruit.

Review:

Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from an excellent vintage. Deep, dark fruit crashes over firm, ropey tannin. To say that this will live and mature over a long period is an understatement. Mint, cassis, clovey oak, undergrowth. A substantial wine with a substantial future. - The Wine Front 94 Points

Raymond Chan, NZ, April 2016

Dark, deep, near saturated black-red colour with a touch of garnet on the edge. The nose is very firm and tightly bound with concentrated aromas of blackberry fruit harmoniously entwined with layers of menthol and cedar, revealing nuances of eucalypt, black olives and cassis. The aromatics build in intensity with aeration. Full-bodied, the palate features a firm and tightly concentrated heart with layers of rich and lusciously sweet, blackcurrant fruit with cassis, blackberries, menthol. mint and cedar. The palate is well-constructed with plenty of fine-grained tannin extraction forming a firm and dense core, with integrated acidity lending tension and drive, and enhancing the fruit sweetness. The structure carries the flavours to a long, lingering finish. This is a finely concentrated, firm, but fine-grained Cabernet Sauvignon with sweet blackcurrant fruit and layers of cassis, menthol, mint and cedar. Serve with lamb and beef, and with hard cheeses over the next 7-10 years. Fruit from ‘Milton’ Park, Eden Valley, fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 16 months in French oak hogsheads. -18.5/20 Raymond Chan, NZ, April 2016

Shibumi Knoll Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

The namesake knoll from where this fruit is sourced is part of a larger area of the Napa Valley floor in the far north of St Helena where there is topographical undulation, indicating a onetime geologically active area where there was plenty of movement and unsettled earth as the valley floor was forming millions of years ago. The benefit is wine grapes grown in an area like this display more complexity and in particular, spice notes that other valley floor sites do not inherently possess.

The invitingly beautiful, rich, lush burgundy color is your first sense engaging you to taste. The nose gives off black currant, velvety vanilla, subtle fig, and crisp bell pepper with a clean refreshing hint of grapefruit. The finish is long and beautiful with a liveliness and hint of richness, all leading you to a pleasurable lasting finish.

Niero Cote Rotie Eminence 2013

The wine isa blend of 95% Syrah which gives strenght and structure and 5% Viognier for roundness and aromatic complexity.
The nose majestically unveils an explosion of delicate aromas of red and black small fruits. The charm goes on through a silky texture, full of integrity and freshness, with fat tannins and a sweet final taste. Wonderful.

The grapes are coming from a 1.8 hectare (4.50 acres) vineyard.
The terroirs is made of schist soil on the slopes of "Valliere" and on the terraces of granitic "Coteau de Bassenon".
Vines are 20 years old on average.

Review:

Vivacious and peppery, this delicately framed Côte-Rôtie offers crisp black-cherry and berry flavors accented by savory truffle, leather and spice. Fine, rigid tannins and penetrating black-fruit flavors still need time to integrate. Hold till 2020.- Wine Enthusiast (March 2018), 92 pts
