The 2019 vintage in Vire-Clesse is concentrated and structured on the pallet hinting towards its ability to take on some time in the cellar. This will be one of the sleeper vintages you have heard me speak of in the past, worth tossing some in a cellar and forgetting it a decade.

Vire-Clesse is a Chardonnay producing region in southern Burgundy that has created excellent wine for decades, but was never included in the more widely known Pouilly Fuisse and surrounding regions. Due to the consistent and exceptional wines coming from the region, the French government created the Vire-Clesse region in 1999. The wines were amazing before, but now they have their own official region! Guillemot-Michel’s Vire Clesse Quintaine is an amazing complex Chardonnay that can take on many years in the cellar.

For more educational purposes than anything, I’ve tasted his wines with 25 years of bottle age on them and have never been disappointed. However, I do admit I enjoy these wines young with just a few years of bottle age, the crisp acidity is amazing with fish courses or fresh cut fruits.

Review:
Notes of crisp green orchard fruit, oatmeal, clear honey, white flowers and mint introduce the 2019 Viré-Clessé Quintaine, a medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated wine that's deep and sapid, framed by lively acids and chalky structuring dry extract. If the 2018 is open and demonstrative, the 2019 is built to age and will really reward some patience.
