Wine from Friuli

The majority of vineyards in the Friuli wine region in Italy are located in the southern half of the region. The region is bordered by the Alps, which separates it from Austria. Slovenia borders Friuli on the east. The northern part of the region is very mountainous giving way to plains and flatter terrain as it makes its way to the sea. Friuli enjoys chilly nights, and very warm days that help to maintain the balance in the grapes sugar and acidity levels. This allows for a long and slow grape growing season. During the summer, the average temperature is 73° with harvest taking place in September. The soils in Friuli vary from sand, clay and gravel in the valleys to flysch sandstone and calcium rich marl in the mountainous regions.
White wine dominates the region, although 40% is red with Merlot being the most predominant red wine grape. During the 1960’s, winemakers pioneered white winemaking in Italy making it easier to remove the juice from the grape skins. The majority of Friuli wines is in varietal form and requires wine to be produced using 100% of one grape.
The philosophy of the winemakers in Friuli is to bring out the flavor and acidity of the grapes without masking the fruitiness with oak.

Johann Michel Cornas Cuvee Mere Michel is made from 100 percent Syrah.
Cuvee Mère Michel was first introduced in 2016 and is not produced every year. This wine is a tribute to Johann Michel' wife, Emmanuelle, and a nod to the French song, La Mere Michel. This wines comes from Selection Massale (replanting new vineyards with cuttings from exceptional old vines from the same property) cuttings of Serine off the 1947 Yves Cuilleron vineyard at Chavanay. The vineyards are located in the lieu-dit "Les Cotes" at an altitude of 230 meters and benefiting from a southern sun exposure.

"Only made in top vintages, the 2018 Cornas Mère Michel is a tribute to Johann's wife and a play on the French song "La Mere Michelle." Brought up in a new demi-muid, it's a richer, broader wine compared to the Cuvée Jana yet still has incredible Cornas style in its red, black, and blue fruits as well as notes of toasted spice, roasted meat, chocolate, and wild herbs. Rich, full-bodied, and opulent, it has a touch more upfront appeal and should be drinkable in just 4-5 years yet also evolve for two decades." -

Avennia Valery Red Blend is made from 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc
Valery is named for the patron saint of wine in the St. Emilion region that inspired it.
We started with old vine Merlot from a stony block in the heart of the Yakima Valley and added complex, aromatic Cabernet Franc from the Horse Heaven Hills. The result is a balanced, complex wine with the elegance and ethereal perfume that this blend of two of Washington’s best varietals are known for.
The nose on this wine is very perfumed, almost exotic with notes of fresh violets, red plum, winter mint, fresh herbs and crushed limestone qualities. The palate is poised and balanced, with red fruits and mocha powder encapsulated in limestone. The finish lingers delicately, with the Cabernet Franc asserting a light tobacco and herb note, giving depth. A compelling wine that will continue to unwind for 7-10 years in the cellar.
Review:
The really good 2023 Avennia ‘Valery’ is nearly all Merlot (90%) with the remainder Cabernet Franc. It is big and bold with terrific freshness and mid-palate depth. Black tea and exotic spices fill the nose with shades of orange bell pepper and heady dark fruits, with dark chocolate shavings. Lush and ripe on the mouth, this exhibits terrific length and underlying tension. Enjoy now and over the next fifteen plus years to come. Drink 2026-2042-
