Gamba Zinfandel Moratto Vineyard 2008

Turley Pesenti Zinfandel is made from 100 percent Zinfandel. 

This certified organic estate-owned vineyard was planted in the 1920s on primarily limestone soil. Though the vines are head-trained and dry-farmed, the soil plays the most important role in distinguishing this vineyard on the west side of Paso Robles. The wines have a brightness, with chalk and floral characteristic aromas unique to the site, and to Zinfandel in general.

Review:

Dark and brambly, with brooding plum and blackberry flavors accented by licorice, clove and smoked pepper tones as this builds grip toward medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2035. 2,387 cases made.

Trione Zinfandel Flatridge Ranch 2019 is made from Zinfandel.

From the secluded Flatridge Ranch, a ten-acre vineyard planted in 2008 in the coastal hills using a Zinfandel clone taken from a century-old Cloverdale block, and aged eighteen months in American oak. Aromatic and generous, it shows ripe blue and black fruit, sweet spice and a supple, elegant palate.

Mason Cellars Pelissa Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2020 Mason Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon is quintessentially Oakville from nose to finish. Attractive fresh blackberry, red current and chocolate with a hint of sweet oak boast out of the glass. This wine showcases graphite, velvety tannins and concentrated, beautifully balanced flavors with a bit of spice and white pepper. These bold flavors typical of Oakville Cabernet are rounded out with velvety tannins, a weighty mid-palate and a long, juicy finish.

Turley Zinfandel Buck Cobb is made from 100 percent Zinfandel. 

Organically farmed head-trained vines planted at 1500' in the granite and quartz soils of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Primarily savory and red-fruited, with characteristics of black pepper, dried meats and fine-grained tannin texture.

This would be an excellent pairing with wood-fired pizza.

The 2023 Zinfandel Buck Cobb Vineyard is bold, juicy and expressive. Dark cherry, plum, gravel, spice, herbs and lavender are front and center. This shows terrific depth and plenty of character to match its exuberant personality.

After 20 years of marketing Napa Valley and its wines, Karen Cakebread launched her own project in 2008 with two major goals in mind: to create beautifully structured wines that reflect the vineyards from which they come, and to be involved in every aspect of making the wines.Karen started ZIATA, named in honor of her mother, Mary Annunziata, in 2008 with three varietals: Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, which she chose for their food-friendly qualities. She hired Anne Vawter, a protégée of Heidi Barrett, as winemaker and sourced grapes from sustainable sources, working closely with the grape growers through the growing season, knowing that efforts made in the vineyard would create better wine than those manipulated in the cellar. Jennifer Williams : I find winemaking to be both an art and a trade—you learn by doing and working the vineyards, ensuring the fruit is the best it can be long before it’s picked is at least half the work of the winemaker.

Reviews:

A solid red with blackberries and dark chocolate, as well as crushed-stone character. Medium body and layered tannins. Attractive now, but give it time. Better in 2025.

Limpid ruby-red. Fresh red berries, blood orange, floral and baking spice qualities on the incisive nose. Juicy, focused and lithe on the palate, offering subtly sweet raspberry and cherry flavors and building spicecake and cola nuances. Closes long and nervy, with discreet tannins framing repeating floral and spice notes.
