Le Macioche Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2017

Le Macioche Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is made from 100 percent Sangiovese.

Brunello di Montalcino from Le Macioche is a singular wine. Produced from 100% organically managed mature Sangiovese vines planted in the early 1980’s, Le Macioche Brunello is fermented by indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks.  The wine undergoes malolactic conversion and ageing in 30HL Slavonian oak casks before being bottled unfiltered.  With a brilliant ruby core, and exceptional elegance complementing its ample power, this is as close to a Burgundian expression as Montalcino gets.

Le Macioche sits in the center of the Montalcino appellation, just about 5 minutes due southeast from Montalcino.  Nestled in a prestigious neighborhood among such prominent addresses as San Polo and Fattoria dei Barbi, Le Macioche is unique in that its four sections of Brunello vineyard, spread over 7.5 acres, are all exposed to the Southwest. This, along with the elevation of roughly 1,400 feet above sea level, ensures both exceptional ripening and constant ventilation throughout each growing season.  Such auspicious conditions have enabled Le Macioche to safely exercise organic farming practices with the 2018 vintage marking the estate’s full organic certification.

Brunello di Montalcino from Le Macioche is ripe and supple.  Aromas of dried berries, plum, and sour cherry mix with hints of oak, sweet spice, and leather. This powerful red wine is held in perfect harmony by an undercurrent of brilliant acidity and a structure of firm yet ripe tannins paired against. A substantial wine without ever feeling heavy. The finish is long, balanced, and complex.

Brunello di Montalcino is a wine that may be best enjoyed on its own as an object of contemplation and pleasure. Of course, it will also pair exceptionally well with a variety of hearty main course dishes ranging from the rustic to the refined. Meat is not mandatory, but wild game and fowl are traditional.

Review:

Sitting at 450 metres, Le Macioche is located just southeast of the town of Montalcino. Half of the estate’s six hectares of vineyards are registered for Brunello production. The 2017 vintage represents the first under ownership of the Cotarella family. An appealing mix of cocoa and balsamic herbs greets the nose. Mid-weight and juicy, the palate takes on accents of underbrush and there is great fruit purity and firmness of structure. The finish is savoury with just a hint of those drying tannins that mark the vintage.

Coppo Pomorosso Barbera d'Asti Superiore Nizza 2017

Coppo Pomorosso Barbera d'Asti Superiore Nizza 2017 is made from  100% Barbera.

Pomorosso can be considered Coppo’s landmark. It’s a cornerstone of Barbera’s history, a wine that played an important role for the international recognition of Coppo. 100% barbera, Pomorosso always respected the most strict rules of production, even way before they were written down for “Nizza docg”. The soil is marine sediment and rich in minerals, which gives the wine finesse, minerality, and longevity.

Review:

This is one of those fortunate wines that enjoys special recognition as its own brand, Pomorosso. It's also one of the pioneers of the recently minted Nizza denomination. Coppo has been making Pomorosso since 1984 and has learned a thing or two along the way. The 2017 Nizza Pomorosso is an excellent edition from a vintage that mistreated many of Piedmont's other varieties because of scorching summer heat. However, Barbera loves the heat, and this wine has absorbed every last sunbeam, adding to the wine's inner richness and concentration. Dark fruit, black currant, spice, tobacco and barbecue smoke rise from the bouquet. The aromas are big, but so is the wine's hold and grip on the palate. I taste the heat (this bottle declares a 16% alcohol content), but fresh acidity keeps the wine from feeling too heavy or ripe.

"Plenty of peach and fresh-pineapple character here to fill out the medium-full body. Fresh and quite long, in spite of the moderate acidity. Drink now."

Winery: Fortezza Societa Agricola

La Fortezza is located in the heart of Sannio Benevento and spreads over a total of 20 hectares of vines. The winery is born from the great passion of the founder Enzo Rillo for his land. “La Fortezza” was built on the belief that making great wines starts in the vineyards and that the strength of the estate lies on the quality soil, sun exposure, altitude and care of the vineyards.
The project is based on the strong belief that producing a very good vintage is to express great love and strong passion for what they do, and to ensure the customers receive high quality wines with a stylish appeal.

Date Founded: 2006
Owner: Enzo Rillo
Winery Philosophy: Producing “a very good vintage” is first to express great love and strong passion for what we do, and secondly to ensure our customers are receiving quality wine with a stylish appeal.

Torrecuso, where La Fortezza is located, extends on the eastern side of the Regional Park of Taburno-Camposauro: the slopes are a continuous alternation of vineyards, woods and small fields, to which only in the last hours of the day the profile of Mount Taburno subtracts light and heat. Here the work of man - the diligent action of the peasant - has not ravaged, invaded nor defaced. A territory that is harsh yet generous, and that has decided to understand, deepen and know within the attachment we have for our land what the deepest meaning of the Samnite pride is: awareness and dimension of a freedom that once was only a desire to defend their land from the Roman armies, but that today is an attachment for what it represents and expresses in terms of culture, folklore and productions.

Varietals Produced: FALANGHINA, GRECO, FIANO, AGLIANICO
Winemaker: Vittorio Festa

The province of Benevento has for centuries produced excellent grapes for excellent wines and represents about 40% of the vineyard area of the Campania Region. While they believe that "wine is made in the vineyard", their real strength actually consists of a mix of soil quality, sun exposure, altitude and care of the vineyard. Their vines Aglianico del Taburno are in such quantity that they permit them a careful selection in the vineyard for the different range of wines and guarantee the production of wines of the highest quality such as the Reserve, whose grapes come from a vineyard about seventy years of age.
Falanghina del Taburno benefits from a good sun exposure that brings an optimal result in terms of sugar content, aromas and acidity of the wine.

The cellar is located at the very heart of the vineyards. It is completely covered with stone and well-integrated into the surrounding landscape. It consists of two separate bodies. In the upper part is an enchanting place with a wonderful view towards the Apennines that separates Campania from Puglia. The underlying body opens over two medieval-style doors that are rigorously carved in solid wood, and it is home to the production activity - a perfect blend of tradition and modern technology. The barrel vaults are part of the aging room that is entirely covered with terracotta bricks and partly excavated in the tuff. This brings us back to the idea of the old "cellars" of the rural farmhouses - the places that were destined to conserve both wine and food. The processing room, the winemaking equipment, the bottling and labeling room, the steel tanks and the warehouse complete the cellar, with a potential production of about two million bottles.
