
Silvaner or Sylvaner is a white wine grape variety grown in Germany and Alscace. The formal name of the variety is Gruner Silvaner and is known as the grape that goes with Liebfraumilch. The variety has been grown in Europe, in Transylvania and DNA reports show that the variety is a blend between Traminer and Osterreichisch-Weib. The variety is thought to have originated in Transylvania and was introduced in Germany after the Thirty Years War. The name Silvaner is linked with the Latin words for woods or wild, which led some to believe that the variety is related to wild vines. It was the most planted variety of wine grapes in Germany until Muller-Thurgau in the late 1900s. The variety was typically blended into Liebfraumilch, but overgrowth and overproduction produced negative results for the variety. In Franconia, however, the variety has remained popular. Silvaner is not typically oaked because the rich and fruit flavors of the wine would be overpowered by the oak. The grapes produce wines that are less acidic than Riesling wines, and the color of Silvaner wines tend to be pale. The aroma of these fine wines contain aromas of elderberry, basil, and fern, and pairs well with seafood or asparagus.

Maison Chapoutier Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Bernardine 2021 is made from 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre.
Intense crimson-red in color with a complex but subtle nose of blackcurrant and plum followed by roasted coffee, cinnamon, and cherry. On the palate, it opens into spice, licorice and fruity notes.
Review:
A textural, refined and velvety Chateauneuf-du-Pape with aromas of forest berries, wet stones, roasted meat, wild herbs and some bark. It’s medium- to full-bodied with fine, firm tannins. There is a refined texture here, silky at the center, with a delicate core of dark cherries challenged by an intense array of spices that provide verve and energy.

On the western slope of the south-facing Ribbon Ridge sits the lovely Lichtenwalter Vineyard. Here Willakenzie soils, derived from ancient sedimentary seabed, coax black fruits and concentrated spices out of the wines.
Aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, blackberry, and black cherry with concentrated spices followed by hints of sandalwood, smoke and oolong tea. Depth in the mid-palate pairs with balanced acidity, and so, yet structured tannins. The Willamee Valley’s smallest AVA speaks clearly and compellingly through this wine.
This wine comes from 100% destemmed rotator barrels fermented at ambient temperature reaching a peak temperature of 73° F. The rotator barrel spun twice daily during fermentation yielding a gentle extraction. Aer fermentation, the wine went through a three-week extended maceration, allowing the tannins to polymerize, soening the wine. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels and three months in tank, the wine was then boled aer filtration.
