Wine from Jumilla

Jumilla is a wine region in Spain. The DO, known as Spanish Denominacion de Origen for wines extends over the region just north of Murcia. This also includes the municipality of Jumilla, and the southeast of the Albacete province. To date there are 32,000 hectares of vines under the Jumilla region. 45% of those grapes are Murcia, and 55% are Albacete. Jumilla has 3,000 grape-growers currently registered in the DO.
The climate in Jumilla is continental featuring cold winters and very hot and long summers. So close to the Mediterranean Sea, the wine region of Jumilla is arid and has very little rainfall, which averages about 33 mm per year. The irregular precipitation usually occurs during fall and spring. Severe rain and thunderstorms hit the region during the fall and spring and could cause damage to the vines. The annual average temperature is 16°C although occasionally a maximum of 40°C can be reached during the summer months. During the winter it is not uncommon to see temperatures hit well below 0° C. Frost can occur during March and April. The grape vines get well over 3,000 hours of sunlight every year.
Other crops that are grown in the wine region of Jumilla include olives, and fruit trees. The region’s most popular grape is Monastrell.

In a round and generous style, showing very good depth and appealing sweetness to the blackberry and cherry cola flavors. "The 2020 Capitel is pure Verdejo from the oldest vines from the Peña Aguda vineyard in the village of Nieva on slate soils. This is the last vineyard to be bottled and has higher alcohol (14%) than the rest of the vineyards despite now harvesting earlier. The wine has a different aromatic profile but getting closer to the style of Ossian, less opulent than in the past, with more energy, quite fruit-driven with some exotic notes reminiscent of banana skin. The whole clusters were pressed and the juice put to ferment in barrel where the wine matured with the lees and, starting this year, without bâtonnage, because they feel the wines have enough volume and stirring the lees can bring more oxidation to the wine. 2,500 bottles produced. - Luis GUTIERREZ"

Just south of the winery, Bacigalupi Vineyard straddles Westside Road in the upper reach of Russian River Valley. The 125 acre vineyard encompasses a range of terroir, from heavier valley floor soil along the Russian River to alluvial clay loam on the rolling hillsides. The fruit is sourced from a superb block of 25 year-old Wente Clone vines located on the western slope of the site. Bacigalupi was the source of the Chateau Montelena Chardonnay that, famously, beat the French wines at the "Judgement of Paris" in 1976.
Bacigalupi Chardonnay has a nose of lemon zest and vanilla bean. The palate opens with red pear and Meyer lemon, and brioche toast and honey comb notes on the finish. Like well-made Chardonnay from great vineyards around the world this wine benefits from getting some air, will age for years, and is best when served chilled around 50 degrees. This wine will evolve in the bottle for many years to come. A terrific wine from one of Sonoma County's top sites for Chardonnay.
