Known as a sub-region in France, Maconnais is in the south of the country and situated in the prime Burgundy wine region. Macon is a town that is located on the Saone River and is in the middle of the Maconnais. Producing large amounts of wine, Maconnais specializes in Chardonnay, made from white grapes, and also grows a small amount of Gamay and Pinot Noir grapes that are used for red wine. The vineyards in the sub-region of Maconnais are sparse and interspersed with other crops such as citrus and nuts. Limestone hills dominate the landscape of Maconnais. The climate is much warmer than other parts of the country and enjoys a lower rainfall average. The Mediterranean climate gives the region less frost that can damage the vines. Although the sub-region of Maconnais overlaps the part of the region of Beaujolais, it is also a part of the Burgundy wine region. Maconnais produces red, white, and rose wines that are spread across the region. Most of the vineyards produce high quality award winning wines like Macon Lugny. Sub-regions like Maconnais are not very well known in the United States, but in their home country, they are deemed high value.

A beautiful Pouilly-Fuisse from "La Marechaude" parcel that Saumaize-Michelin acquired in 2013. Planted on clay and limestone slopes and hand harvested, this Chardonnay offers fresh and elegant notes of white flowers, crisp, citrus and exotic fruits. Powerful and mineral on the palate with a fantastic balance, finesse and freshness. The exceptional terroir brings minerality and juicy flavors of stone fruits, peach and melon supported by subtle toasty notes.
It is now a Premier Cru.
Saumaize-Michelin Pouilly-Fuisse “Clos sur la Roche” is made from 100 percent Chardonnay.
Produced from the oldest parcel of the estate dating back from 1979 and planted on the slopes of the Vergisson Rock, "Clos sur la Roche" benefits from a south sun exposure. This beautiful Chardonnay offers abundant floral and white fruit aromas, toasty and buttery notes and brioche scents. Well-balanced and concentrated on the palate with a rich structure and refreshing notes of zesty lemon and mineral purity that brings a vibrant energy to the finish.
Complex aromas of soft citrus fruits and minerals. Densely packed and fresh, with intense, complex flavors of white fruit as well as a hint of spice. The finish is very firm, long but not dry.

Quintessa Red 2022 is made from 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Carménère, 1% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot.
The 2022 Quintessa is a charming wine, opening with intense aromas of black cherry and cassis that are complemented by notes of tobacco, bay laurel, cedar, and dark chocolate. Plush and inviting on entry, this wine’s flavors align with its aromas. The palate reveals dark fruits and an undertone of crushed rocks, tar, and graphite. On the finish, this vintage displays the signature fine-grained tannin of their Quintessa terroir, backed by voluminous texture and fruit.
Review:
Such an incredible wine here - one of the stars of the September releases. Smells amazing, cooling blueberries with fragrant blackcurrants, edges of florality - totally inviting scents. Full and filling in the mouth, this is ample with such a layered effect, super vertical and elongated. Tight and a little tense but it really works - such balance between black fruit, dried herbs, high acidity and a profound structure. Refined and beautifully presented. So much life, so much energy - this is pure class. A wine you don't want to put down. Feels hands off despite such concentration and power. Ends salty with sticky liquorice, mint and cooling wet stones. You could definitely drink this now but it will age too! 1% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot complete the blend. One of the final few vintages with Rodrigo Soto at the helm - he stepped down last year to concentrate on his family project Far Mountain in Sonoma Valley which is worth following. The 2023 Post & Beam Cabernet Sauvignon opens with expressive aromas of red fruit, cassis, and blackberry jam, accented by hints of cedar and graphite. On the palate, the wine is youthful and vibrant, showing polished tannins and a core of dark fruit that brings both weight and freshness. Notes of brambly berry, mocha, and subtle spice carry through a long, mouth-coating finish, highlighting the vintage's balance and structure.
