An explosive nose of Cabernet—singular only to the Napa Valley—introduces the 2019 Starstruck with classically elegant red and black Cabernet fruits, enhanced by notes of smoked sage and rosemary. Red-fruits carry the mid-palate, dancing on a pillow of wonderfully sweet tannin and pie spice complexity. As the wine transitions from the mid, acid emerges lifting Starstruck's massive palate into a warming finish that continues to reveal dark fruits and intriguing spice accents. A gorgeous Cabernet that remains approachable, while its structure and earthy complexities keep bombast at bay.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Starstruck has a deep garnet-purple color and beguiling notes of fresh wild blueberries, Morello cherries and mulberries, followed by a core of warm cassis, chocolate mint, stewed black tea and dried roses. Full-bodied, rich and spicy in the mouth, the palate slowly releases loads of fragrant layers, textured with ripe, soft tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with a lingering minty kick. Yum! 150 cases were made.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Starstruck has a classic Napa Valley Cabernet nose of crème de cassis, violets, lead pencil, and flowery incense. This carries to a medium-bodied, supple, nicely textured Cabernet with moderate tannins, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. It's ready to go and should keep for 10-12 years or more.

Came to wine as a consumer, fell in love, began devouring all things wine. Chemical engineer by education, drawn to the process. Began making wine in my basement in Chicago. Started with a concentrate kit, grew to flash-frozen grapes, brought to Chicago by rail car from Napa, fermented in garbage cans, pressed through nylon bags to carboy. Following season, 2005, came to California for first harvest work. Harvest internships in 06 and 07, bought first ton of grapes at end of 07 harvest and began Argot.

The 2022 Starstruck, a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, underwent native fermentation on the skins for up to 18 days before ageing for 22 months in 33% new French oak, with no racking. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, this is a barrel selection of wines from Argot’s three primary vineyard sources—Leonardini Vineyard in St. Helena, Sage Ridge Vineyard, perched high above Lake Hennessey in the Vaca Mountains, and Bonny’s Vineyard in Oakville. An expressive wine, bold yet charming, layered with plump, satiny fruits and framed by supple tannins. It features a mix of red, black, and blue fruit notes, delicate brown spices, high-mountain sage, and a hint of deep-forest bay laurel, finishing with saline-mineral tension and just a kiss of heat from the 15.4% alcohol. It remains balanced and complexly layered, best served at cellar temperature to allow those nuances to shine. Winemaker Justin Harmon, a Chicago native with a background in chemical engineering, founded Argot Wines.

Hailing from the historic Bonny’s Vineyard in the heart of Oakville. Cabernet Sauvignon vines thrive in the gravel rich soils here adjacent to the Napa River riverbed. Roots plumb deep into the valley floor, while vine canopies harvest Napa Valley’s plethora of summer sunshine. These conditions conspire to deliver unerringly perfect Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
Pouring a deep opaque red-violet, 1555’s Cabernet personality leaps from the glass balancing opulent fruit, damp earth, chilling minerality and an alluring spice note that keeps pulling us back for more. Exquisitely ripe tannins provide a refined, velvety structure, delivering the deep and seductively rich palate. The pedigree displayed in the glass is undeniable.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon 1555 Oakville wafts sensuously out of the glass with redcurrant jelly, black raspberries and rose oil scents, followed by a cassis and black plums core, with emerging suggestions of cinnamon toast, cedar and pencil shavings. The full-bodied palate is fantastically fragrant, delivering red and black fruit layers accented by floral and exotic spice nuances, supported by super ripe, velvety tannins, finishing long and perfumed. 250 cases were made.

Sugarloaf’s terroir continues to impress with its expression of classically-styled Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons — impeccably pure black and red fruit character; broad, rich, perfectly ripe tannins; classic Napa Valley notes of cigar leaf, eucalyptus, and freshly-tilled earth; and definitive complexities of clove, all-spice and bay leaf. Having assessed past vintages with a few years of age, we have come to greatly value the significant reward Sugarloaf delivers after a few years in the cellar.
From Block 6, an acre of fiercely steep, ferociously rocky hillside, located in Napa’s far south-eastern foothills, deeply affected by the cooling influences of San Pablo Bay. One of the latest harvests in all of Napa Valley each vintage. Mother Nature was kind to this site in 2019, being our most bountiful year here ever. With perfect set, and vines displaying great health, this normally stingy hillside delivered superlative quality, without restraint of yield. After a slow start in the Spring, 2019’s particularly warm September and October played beautifully to the vineyard’s strengths, and delivered a classic Halloween-time harvest.

It is not often that you see a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon coming from this rising star, cooler-climate vineyard in south Napa. This wine comes exclusively from the low-yielding, steep, rocky "Block 6." Deep purple-black in color, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Sugarloaf Vineyard needs a little coaxing to reveal wonderfully pure scents of blackcurrant cordial, juicy blueberries and ripe blackberries, plus suggestions of iris bulb, dark chocolate, molten licorice and cedar chest. The big, rich, seductive, full-on full-bodied palate is laden with ripe, energetic black berry layers, framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and perfumed. A stunning, true-blue Napa blockbuster with its own very evocative signature, this comes highly recommended! 175 cases were made.

An unseasonably wet and cool springtime produced significant shatter at Sage Ridge in 2019, reducing our yields by 50%, leading to a particularly flamboyant edition of this wine.

Always one of the more exotic wines in the lineup, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Sage Ridge Valley just about jumps out of the glass with its red, blue, and black fruits as well as floral, orange blossom, and bouquet garni-like nuances. It's beautiful on the palate as well and is medium to full-bodied, has supple, seamless tannins, wonderful balance, and a great finish. As with all of these 2019s, it has plenty of up-front appeal, yet I think it will benefit from just a year or two of bottle age and have 15-20 years of prime drinking.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Sage Ridge Vineyard opens with open-knit notes of plum preserves, baked blackberries and boysenberry jam, leading to a core of crème de cassis, mocha, camphor and Indian spices with a touch of unsmoked cigars. The palate is full-bodied, concentrated and dense with black fruit preserves, framed by soft tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and very spicy. Only 75 cases were made.

Among the tapestry of historic vineyards in Napa Valley, there are a few standout names, but even fewer sites, if any, involve the rare combination of legendary wine, romance, and a touch of mystery. Bonny’s Vineyard is such a place. This four-acre vineyard in the Oakville District is both a special piece of land and a unique part of Napa history. It was planted in 1974 by Justin Meyer, the winemaker and co-founder of Silver Oak Cellars, as a gift to his wife, Bonny. Ideally situated in a gravelly spot adjacent to Conn Creek on the valley floor, Bonny’s Vineyard was responsible for a memorable string of Silver Oak vintages over the course of two decades.
Justin Meyer stopped producing the Bonny's Vineyard designate after the 1991 vintage. After replanting in 1999, the family has again decided to make a single vineyard bottling. True to the orignal, this is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 100% American oak barrels for almost 3 full years. The nose exhibits dark fruit aromas of cherry and plum mingling with cedar and cardamom and a hint of eucalyptus. The palate is the heart of this wine, with concentrated fruit on the entry and luscious, silky tannins filling the mouth with an almost endless finish.
As distinct and impressive a terroir as we farm in the Napa Valley. The rocky, gravel-rich soils contribute a distinct sauvage/mineral character, creating a stunning complexity to play off of Cabernet’s natural robust and fruit-driven personality from Oakville. In 2021 Argot added a new vineyard block to our holdings at Bonny’s. Deeper gravel and the famously low-yielding Disney clone conspire towards awesome complexity, and a deeply mysterious, brooding personality. A wholly different Cabernet from its 2021 siblings that you will not want to miss. Only 150 cases produced.
Review:
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Bonny's Vineyard is another gem of a wine. Coming all from a site in Oakville and aged 22 months in 85% new French oak, it has a medium to full-bodied, layered, rich, textured style as well as velvety tannins, ripe red and black currant fruit, some leafy herb, iron, and underbrush notes, and a great finish. It's one of my favorites in the lineup from Argot, and it has everything you could want from an Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. It will benefit from just a few years of bottle age and evolve for 15-20 years if well stored.

Marked by subtle sage and menthol notes, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Bonny's Vineyard also features effusive black cherries and cassis aromas. Mainly Clone 8, with some Disney (See) as well, it's medium to full-bodied, silky and smooth on the palate, with a reasonably supple and lengthy finish.

Our first wine in working with the vineyards owned by the Leonardini family of Whitehall Lane. A tribute to them and, more crucially, the numerous Leos—by both name and astrological sign—in our life.
Our most quintessential Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibiting brilliant purity, profound depth of fruit, focused acidity and fine tannin structure. This is Rutherford in full flight as soaring black fruits push forth over subtle earth notes that all dazzle on an invigorating, lively palate structure. While each of Argot’s three Napa Valley wines offer their own distinct take on the variety and terroir, it is the Cuvee Leo’s that is the most classic and exemplary.

The deep ruby/plum-hued 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Cuv e Leo is also absolutely terrific. Cassis, spicy oak, espresso, tobacco, and graphite all shine here, and this beauty is medium to full-bodied, with remarkable purity, a good spine of acidity, and the focused, vibrant, fresher style of the vintage. It's a gorgeous wine that will evolve for at least 15 years.

The black cherry, black currant and licorice flavors work well together, pumping through as subtle notes of loam and singed alder skirt underneath. The polished finish lets in a violet accent. There are 135 cases of the impressive 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Cuvée Leo, from the Leonardini Vineyard in Saint Helena. Marked by hints of pencil shavings and crushed stone, it also features black cherries on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is softly dusty and gently tannic. The wine finishes long but also a bit herbal and cedary. If the oak flavors and tannins integrate further with time, my rating may look conservative.

Dark plum in color with abundant aromas of dark chocolate, black cherry, and sun-ripened blackberry with a hint of cedar. Layered flavors of blackberry and raspberry pie filling, accompanied by notes of cinnamon, chocolate, and nutmeg play on the palate. Smooth and focused with refined tannins and a medium finish.
G.D. Vajra Barolo Coste di Rose is made from 100 percent Nebbiolo.
The Coste di Rose is a very seductive wine right out of the gate. Cherries and roses burst on the nose, with hints of amarena, red hard candy, wild berries, wet stone, mint and thyme. The palate is radiant and expressive, with all of the signature elements of Coste di Rose in nice evi-dence: the ethereal character, the saline, up-front tannic structure, and further whiffles of roses and cherries in the finish.
G.D. Vajra is one of Barolo's most beloved family estates, farming organically in La Morra since the early 1970s and known for fragrant, high-toned, transparent Nebbiolo. Coste di Rose is one of the highest and coolest crus in Barolo, its sandy, well-draining soils yielding especially perfumed and graceful wines; the 2022 is a touch more structured and powerful than most.

Floral, as is typical of this estate, with crunchy red fruit and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied, with a blanket of delicate, tender fruit defined by chalky, precise yet silky tannins. Drinkable now with proper aeration, but will improve with some bottle age.

The G.D. Vajra 2022 Barolo Coste di Rose is taut and elegant, with a glossy surface that acts as a sounding board to aromas of rose petal, violet pastille, candied orange and cassis. Coste di Rose is one of the highest and coolest crus in Barolo, known for producing especially fragrant and graceful expressions of Nebbiolo. I love the sharpness of the wine and the way it treads lightly over the palate, although the 2022 vintage is in fact a bit more structured and powerful than most. Fruit comes from a 1.5-hectare parcel inside the Coste di Rose cru with a high percentage of well-draining sandy soils that contribute to the wine’s finesse.
