Carignan is a red wine grape that most believe originated in Spain in the Aragon region. Carignan was later transplanted to Sardinia, Italy, Algeria, France, and the majority of the New World. Carignan was considered to be one of the predominant grapes that was responsible for France’s wine lake. Wine regions and vineyards in California rarely use Carignan to produce varietal wines, but some old vines do exist. Carignan is used in Australia as the main component for blended wines. Carignan was crossed with Cabernet Sauvignon producing Ruby Cabernet. Because of its upright growth pattern, it can be grown without the use of a trellis. Historically a component of the neighboring region Rioja, Carignan gained popularity in Algeria and was the leading export to France. When Algeria gained independence in 1962, the Carignan wine supply was cut off and wine growers began to plant Carignan vines in southern France. Carignane became the most widely planted vine in France in 1988 with 167,000 hectares of Carignan. The Carignan vine can produce large yields, nearly 11 tons per acre, and a high sensitivity to grape worms, downy mildew, powdery mildew, and rot. The Carignan grape buds late and ripens in a warm climate, which is mandatory for full ripeness.

This wine displays a deep red color and offers aromas of black- berry, plum and floral notes. A complex palate of black fruits combine with pleasing notes of vanilla. Its volume and silkiness stand out. Juicy tannins and persistent acidity retains balance and elegance.

Laurent-Perrier Brut Millesime is made from 50% Chardonnay, 50% Pinot Noir.
The Vintage is the choice of an exceptional year from which only a selection of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Grands Crus will enter into a future iteration of Grand Siècle. It is a rare and outstanding wine that expresses the character of the year in the Laurent-Perrier style. The wine is white gold in color with a fine sparkle. A flowery nose of great complexity, with notes of citrus and white peaches. A wine that is very present with a lively attack and great finesse with good minerality and notes of grapefruit on the finish. The Vintage 2012 pairs well with seafood and noble fish as well as with poultry or veal. This wine sublimates hard pressed cheeses such as a young Comté or a Beaufort.
Review:
The 2012 Champagne Brut is equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and has 8 grams per liter dosage. Since the 1950s, only 30 vintages have been produced by the house. The aromatics are reminiscent of a Burgundian feel, with pleasant flinty reduction, smoke, and vibrant green fruits of pear and citrus blossoms. Offering an energetic mousse with green apple, yellow plum, lemon curd, and wet stone, this wine is well-balanced and should continue to improve over the coming 15-20 years. Best after 2022.

Turley Pesenti Zinfandel is made from 100 percent Zinfandel.
Deeply perfumed and enthralling nose of ripe red fruits, high-toned spices, orange zest, and an almost minty crushed chalk. Palate is smooth, lush, energetic, and pure, with a smack of well-toned acidity, satiating structure, and a long, precise finish.
Reviews:
A briar patch in a glass, this Zin is tightly focused and energetic, with flavors of wild berries, underbrush, espresso and pepper that build tension toward broad-shouldered tannins.

The 2022 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard is a very pretty wine, and also surprisingly delicate for Paso. Medium in body, with terrific nuance, the Pesenti is super-expressive in this vintage. Crushed flowers, blood orange and cedar overtones linger on the aromatic, finessed finish.
