Folle Blanche

Folle Blanche is related to Gouais blanc and is also known by the name “Picpoule”. It is however, not related to the Picpoul variety from Languedoc or Gros Plant and Enrageat Blanc. This light skinned grape variety has been mostly substituted with the hybrid Baco blanc because of damage from phylloxera. After the disease ravaged Folle Blanche vines, growers replaced the vincs with the Ugnu-Blanc variety. The Folle Blanche variety is produced in the Loire Valley of France near Nantes to create the wine Gros Plant du Pays Nantis. The Loire Valley region suits almost 8,000 acres of the Folle Blanche variety and it is planted in vineyards throughout France. The strong, dry and acidic wine goes nicely with shellfish. Folle Blanche is also the variety used in Cognac. Folle Blanche works well to create brandy, but because it ripens late in the year and is sensitive to rot and disease, it is not a popular choice for many growers. In the Loire region of France, Folle Blanche is sometimes used to create a varietal wine, but typically Folle Blanche is used to blend with other grape varieties. Folle Blanche produces light, crisp wines that are acidic and it typically generates a large amount of juice. When ripe, the fruit is semi round and is yellowish green in color.

Wolfberger Alsace Edelzwicker is made from 40 % Pinot Blanc, 30% Riesling, 15% Gewurztraminer and 15 % Muscat
Edelzwicker has a nose of grilled almonds and walnuts, with a light floral hint following. The first sip shows its true character: fresh and lemony with vegetal, herbaceous flavor. It is round and easy drinking, not overpowering and finishes clean.
Each grape variety is harvested individually in early or mid-October on the most suitable date for each vineyard.
It is a good companion for food without ever dominating it. In Alsace it is served by the glass or in large jugs to partner regional specialties. In general Edelzwicker goes well with fresh salads, cold or warm starters, but also with oysters, mussels and seafood. It should always be served chilled, around 10 ° C.

Sugarloaf’s terroir continues to impress with its expression of classically-styled Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons — impeccably pure black and red fruit character; broad, rich, perfectly ripe tannins; classic Napa Valley notes of cigar leaf, eucalyptus, and freshly-tilled earth; and definitive complexities of clove, all-spice and bay leaf. Having assessed past vintages with a few years of age, we have come to greatly value the significant reward Sugarloaf delivers after a few years in the cellar.
From Block 6, an acre of fiercely steep, ferociously rocky hillside, located in Napa’s far south-eastern foothills, deeply affected by the cooling influences of San Pablo Bay. One of the latest harvests in all of Napa Valley each vintage. Mother Nature was kind to this site in 2019, being our most bountiful year here ever. With perfect set, and vines displaying great health, this normally stingy hillside delivered superlative quality, without restraint of yield. After a slow start in the Spring, 2019’s particularly warm September and October played beautifully to the vineyard’s strengths, and delivered a classic Halloween-time harvest.

"It is not often that you see a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon coming from this rising star, cooler-climate vineyard in south Napa. This wine comes exclusively from the low-yielding, steep, rocky "Block 6." Deep purple-black in color, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Sugarloaf Vineyard needs a little coaxing to reveal wonderfully pure scents of blackcurrant cordial, juicy blueberries and ripe blackberries, plus suggestions of iris bulb, dark chocolate, molten licorice and cedar chest. The big, rich, seductive, full-on full-bodied palate is laden with ripe, energetic black berry layers, framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Licenciado Rioja Reserva is made from 100% Tempranillo
This single vineyard wine is always produced from the same vineyard that is also used to make the Gran Reserva wine.
Licenciado shows a ruby red color and outstanding aromas of wild berries, vanilla and spice. The palate is well-balanced, rounded and elegant, and offers black pepper, ripe black fruits and vanilla flavors. Its freshness, oak ageing and high extraction guarantee a longevity of at least 10 years after the year of harvest.
Best enjoyed with red meat and game
Review:
Spicy peppercorns, black cherries, plums and a touch of cocoa powder. Medium-bodied with firm, fine tannins and an extensive finish. Drink now or hold.
