Grenache

Grenache is a spicy tasting grape variety with berry tones and high alcohol content. Grenache is one of the most widely planted red wine grapes in the world. Because the Grenache grape ripens late in the year, it is usually planted in hot and dry regions, such as the south of Spain, France, and the San Joaquin Valley in California. In the 19th century, winemakers celebrated the vine’s ability to produce high yields of fruit and to withstand heat and drought. The variety is low in acid, has a light color, and low tannins. Grenache is a popular choice in Rhone wines, and can be used as over 80 percent of the blend. It is also a companion in French and Spanish rose wines, and its high sugar content makes it the perfect match for fortified wines. In the 18th century, Grenache was one of the first grape varieties to be introduced in Australia, and became the most planted variety in Australia until the 1960s. This variety is often used to blend with other varieties to add sweetness and a nice fruit flavor. Using oak can help with keeping the wine’s color, but too much can overpower the fruit aromas of the variety.

"Moving to the 2019s from bottle, the Grenache-heavy 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Dame Voyageuse offers a beautiful array of both red and black fruits as well as classic Provençal notes of lavender, peppery garrigue, and flowers. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully textured on the palate, this is another terrific vintage for this cuvée, which remains an incredible value in the market today. It will drink nicely for 10-12 years if stored correctly."

Deep ruby red, opaque. Aromas of red fruits, mocha, touches of leather, black truffles and coffee. Fat, very concentrated and full flavored, with an infinitely long liquoriced and fruity finish.
Pairs well with red meats, sauce dishes, game animals (woodcock, wild boar) and semi mature cheeses.

"Lastly, and a tiny production cuvée based on 100% Grenache brought up in new barrels, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Plume Du Peintre reveals a saturated, almost inky purple color as well as a mammoth-sized bouquet of black currants, bloody meats, lead pencil, tobacco, chocolate, and crushed stone, it nevertheless has notable purity, a full-bodied, layered, seamless texture, no hard edges, and a thrilling finish that offers more and more minerality. with time in the glass. You don't see wines like this often today, but this is a singular, heavenly Grenache that's going to need 4-5 years of bottle age and live for 30-40 years if stored correctly given its concentration, structure, and purity. "Big, juicy, bold and powerful. Really driving, chunky, mouthfilling fruit and tannin. It's long, broad and expansive, a huge wine for those that enjoy massive Châteauneufs. It's all there though – the fruit, the ripeness, the smooth tannin , the acidity, the freshness. Will take time to come together then it will be very long lived. The most powerful Dame Voyageuse to date – don't expect an approachable second wine"

It's going to require 4-5 years of bottle age, but this straight-up thrilling Châteauneuf du Pape will have 20-25 years of prime drinking."

"The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Reine Des Bois is a bigger, richer, more structured wine, which is normal. A blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, and the rest equal parts Syrah and Vaccarese, its deeper ruby/purple hue is followed by a brilliant perfume of blackberries, black raspberries, ground pepper, violets, and new saddle leather. Medium to full-bodied and concentrated, with building tannins and great overall balance, it's another wine that shows the style of the vintage brilliantly. It has plenty of up-front charm, but this beauty will evolve nicely for 15-20 years."

Produced from the oldest parcel of the estate dating back from 1979 and planted on the slopes of the Vergisson Rock, "Clos sur la Roche" benefits from a south sun exposure. This beautiful Chardonnay offers abundant floral and white fruit aromas, toasty and buttery notes and brioche scents. Well-balanced and concentrated on the palate with a rich structure and refreshing notes of zesty lemon and mineral purity that brings a vibrant energy to the finish.
Complex aromas of soft citrus fruits and minerals. Densely packed and fresh, with intense, complex flavors of white fruit as well as a hint of spice. The finish is very firm, long but not dry.

Argot Simpatico Ranch Chardonnay is made from 100 percent Chardonnay.
Powerful aromas of key-lime, white flowers, orange blossoms and a fierce, flinty, sauvage note define a wildly complex nose. Once in the mouth, gracefully pronounced textures coat the palate delivering an exotic interpretation of cool-climate Chardonnay character — lime peel, orange blossom, ginger and clove —lingerings deep into a vibrant finish.
Planted 1978. Shallow volcanic soils on the gently-sloped, south-facing foothills of Bennett Peak on Bennett Valley’s floor. One of California’s coolest Chardonnay vineyards. In the final year of 3-year draught cycle, Simpatico Ranch saw its earliest ever harvest and smallest crop, exposing a reserve of exoticism and minerality previously untapped. A watershed vintage for both the vineyard, and appellation. Night harvested by hand on 9/16, whole-cluster pressed direct to barrel; no settling to ensure maximum lees contact. Barrel fermented on heavy lees. Malolactic fermentation. 16 months in French oak, 50% new. Finished 2 months in steel tank, low Sulphur during barrel elevage.
Review:
The 2022 Chardonnay Simpatico Ranch comes bounding out with exuberant notes of juicy peaches, ripe yellow apples, and persimmons, followed by hints of fresh ginger and toasted almonds. The medium to full-bodied palate is soft spoken and savory with a creaminess to the texture and lovely freshness defining the long whispery finish.
