The 2021 King Estate ‘Domaine’ Pinot Noir was stored in 26% new French oak before bottling and represents the top one percent of Estate Pinot Noir barrels. Red currants combine with freshly tilled soils, Black cherry and shades of dried herbs. The palate is soft and refined with silky tannins that frame a core of red and dark fruit flavors. Finishing long, with good viscosity, this is already sgiwubg beautifully right now.

Solomon Hills Estate Pinot Noir is made from 100 percent Pinot Noir. 

Solomon Hills Pinot Noir is always distinctive and singular in its ability to harness the Coastal influence of Santa Maria Valley. Earth tones alongside briar bush and blueberries contrast aromas of forest floor and fired red clay. The noticeable savory elements of cracked black pepper and teriyaki beef nicely balance ripe cherries and blackberries on the palate.


Review:

I loved the bouquet of the 2021 Pinot Noir Solomon Hills, a light ruby-hued effort with perfumed darker cherry, mulberry, leafy herb, and smoked earth nuances. It's medium-bodied, has a layered, seamless texture, integrated tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It's absolutely brilliant. Enjoy bottles over the coming decade or more.

Bass Phillip Estate Pinot Noir 2019

Bass Phillips Estate Pinot Noir is made from 100 percent Pinot Noir.



For this reviewer's money, BP's Estate Pinot offers the best bang for buck. While still a special occasion wine, it's almost as gorgeous as its elder siblings, and crafted for drinking younger. Ironically, it's also the one that takes longest to open up. But when it does, it billows aromas of dried cranberry, cherry preserves, umami-like mushrooms, cocktail bitters and potpourri. The palate is silky with a lift of crystalline acidity, wound ultra fine, talc-like tannins. An iron fist in a velvet glove, this is long and elegant, able to age another 5-7 years but drinking beautifully right now.

DuMol Russian River Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard 2022


Our DuMOL Estate Vineyard is our original high-density vine planting from 2004. It’s organically farmed without irrigation – these vines work hard each season. We make a strict selection for this bottling, one of our flagship wines, so that only three acres of its nine total comprise this bottling; the balance forms the core of Highland Divide. This is the best of the best. The high vine density and exclusively Calera Selection produce a wine with a significant level of both tannin and acidity. This structure is buffered by a deep core of fruit extract, the product of the ripe grape skins themselves, and the essence of the wine. Each vintage can age for many years, and it gradually deepens into a woodsy, truffley, and enveloping wine with grand scale complexity while never relinquishing its inherent brightness. 


The wine’s aromas and flavors are akin to black cherry, boysenberry, hibiscus, anise, moss, and juniper. The palate is simultaneously bright yet dark, with mineral drive, violet floral lift, and bay laurel freshness. Tannins and acidity fuse to lengthen these flavors, and the wine finishes with dried herbs and orange zest lift. Great aging potential. Drink between 2025 and 2034 and decant for an hour in its youth to hasten the development. 

Review:

Medium to deep ruby-purple in color, the 2022 Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard comes barreling out with bold notes of fresh blackberries and black cherries opening out to suggestions of anise, garrigue, and lilacs. The medium-bodied palate reveals impactful black berry flavors with wonderfully spicy accents supported by grainy tannins and great tension, finishing long with a minerally lift. This is an all Calera vineyard. (LPB)

Jonive Estate Pinot Noir 2021

Jonive Estate Pinot Noir is made from 100 percent Pinot Noir. 

This wine has a brilliant Burgundy color with a deep brooding nose that explodes out of the glass with aromas of orange peel, shiitake mushrooms, soy sauce, dried leaves, bay laurel and fall berries. The wine is a great balance between red and black fruit notes that saturate the palate with black tea, autumnal leaves, wood spice, dried citrus peel, and fennel. It is bright and fresh as well as deep and broad. This Pinot Noir is medium bodied combining silkiness with a nice grip of tannin, all with restrained alcohol that gives way to an amazingly complex and long finish that brings you back for another sip, another glass, and another bottle.

Review:

Ripe and succulent, showing a delicious set of raspberry and boysenberry fruit flavors dotted with dried anise, black tea and singed wood spice notes. This is rich yet defined and toasty yet fresh.

Lingua Franca Estate Pinot Noir 2022

Lingua Franca The Plow Pinot Noir is made from 100 percent Pinot Noir. 

A large proportion of fruit from some of our finest sites, 48% coming from Blocks 1 - 3, planted with PN777 clone. Another 44% is sourced from two blocks of the bold PN 115. The elegant and nuanced PN777 Pinot Noir grown on Gelderman-Jory soils creates the top notes of mineral, rose petal and savory elements while the PN115 provides the fruit, body and weight of the wine.


The fruit was sorted in the vineyard, hand-picked, then fermented with wild yeast in medium sized concrete and stainless-steel tanks. The Estate Pinot had 21% whole cluster fermentation without any carbonic. The rest of the fruit was destemmed with only whole berries selected for the final wine. The grapes are sorted first in the vineyard and then by hand and machine at the crushpad. Only whole berries are carried by forklift to the stainless-steel fermenters. Fermentation is spontaneous with wild yeast. Punch downs are done by traditional pigeage. After fermentation, the Estate Pinot Noir 2021 was aged in a combination of 25% new and 75% old French oak barriques for 12 months and four in tank, prior to bottling.


Loin of lamb, Filet Mignon, veal chop, veal scallopini, pasta with Bolognese sauce, charcuterie, hard cheeses, hamburger, Viennese boiled beef (Tafelspitz), Wienerschnitzel, Kalbi, Bulgogi. Teriyaki, Vietnamese shaking beef, Chinese broccoli beef or Feast of the Immortals? Experimentation is welcome!

Review:

The 2022 Pinot Noir Estate saw 20% whole clusters and 20% new oak. A representation of the vineyard, the blend can vary from year to year. The 2022 is a ripe ruby color and opens to notes of spice and ripe raspberries. Medium-bodied, it’s a great appellation wine, with ripe tannins and a great finish. Drink 2024-2036. A few thousand cases were produced.

Why "Cristina“?
Named after my daughter, Cristina, this wine is a special selection of 16 barrels from a unique blend of our Pinot Noir clones that we feel best represents the terroir, or personality, of the Don Miguel Vineyard and shows the most potential for aging.

The Vinification
The grapes were harvested September 2-4 and after minimal crushing, they fermented in small stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged in premium French oak barrels from the forest of Bertranges: 50% new from Remond and Rousseau, and 50% one-year-old. After 11 months of aging in oak the wine was bottled, unfined and unfiltered, in August 2010.

The Clones
The vineyard’s 30 acres of Pinot Noir are planted with several clones, which yield wines with complex layers of flavors. The blend of clones in this vintage is 60% Swan, 35% Pommard, and 5% Dijon 115.

Tasting Notes
This barrel selection of Cristina displays the classic intense aromas of raspberry and blackberry, orange blossom, clove, and a trace of forest floor. The palate is rich and mouthwatering, with silky tannins and great depth. It is a delightful wine to drink right now, but it will develop and gain complexity with age, at least for another 20 years.


 

Review:

A blend of the best barrels of wine sourced from the Don Miguel Vineyard, Cristina is named for Marimar Torres’s daughter. This exceptionally rich wine will reward at least 6–8 years in the cellar. It’s concentrated, with notes of raspberries, cherries, pomegranates and rhubarb, all framed by significant tannins. The overall mouthfeel is elegant and weighty. 92 Point Wine Enthusiast

Exporting a Legacy To California
Nestled in the rolling hills of western Sonoma County, the Russian River/Green Valley appellation is a perfect microclimate for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Only 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean and 50 miles north of San Francisco, the site is influenced by the sea's cooling breezes and drifting fog. That is why Marimar Torres selected this privileged location to "export" the Torres family legacy of fine wines to California.

A Catalan Farmhouse-Winery
Built in 1992 with a capacity of 15,000 cases, the winery sits on a hill surrounded by vines. The production wing is outfitted with carefully selected equipment, to allow the control essential to producing a wine based on minimal handling. Its three barrel rooms with independent temperature and humidity controls provide flexibility to experiment with various vinification techniques, in order to best express the fruit's character.

 

The Marimar Vineyard
The Don Miguel Vineyard: A Unique Site
Marimar came to live in California in 1975. After two years of searching, she acquired the land and began planting the vineyard in 1986. Today there are 30 acres planted with Chardonnay and 30 with Pinot Noir. The wines are made entirely from estate-grown grapes. Named in honor of the late patriarch of the family, the vineyard is unique in California because it is totally European in style. The vines are trained very close to the ground on an open vertical trellis, following the slope of an east-facing hillside; the rootstocks are phylloxera resistant; and the planting density is 2000 vines per acre, four times more than is traditional in California. Such high density promotes root competition and diminishes vigor, naturally reducing the output per vine.
Yields are low and labor is intensive, but the vines live longer and produce grapes with greater concentration of flavors, more refined and elegant aromas, and better balance. To contribute complexity, Marimar did extensive research to select several clones of each varietal: See, Rued and Spring Mountain for Chardonnay; and Cristina 88, Swan, Pommard, Lee, Dijon 115 and Dijon 667 for Pinot Noir. Each clone brings different attributes to the final blend, resulting in wines with deep layers of flavor
