Rolle

Filter

Rolle, also known as Vermentino in Italy, is a white grape variety that thrives in warm, Mediterranean climates. It is widely cultivated across Provence, Corsica, Languedoc, and the southern Rhône in France, as well as in Sardinia, Liguria, and Tuscany in Italy.

Rolle wines are prized for their aromatic complexity, typically offering bright notes of citrus (lemon, grapefruit), green apple, white peach, and pear, complemented by distinctive herbal undertones of fennel, sage, and rosemary. A hallmark of the variety is its natural minerality and subtle saline quality, reflecting the grape's affinity for coastal and limestone-rich terroirs.

Despite warm growing conditions, Rolle retains excellent natural acidity, producing wines with freshness, structure, and balance. The grape yields both outstanding single-varietal whites and plays a key role in blends with Viognier, Sémillon, and Sauvignon Blanc, particularly in IGP Méditerranée wines. Most Rolle-based wines are best enjoyed young for their vivid fruit and aromatic charm, though well-crafted bottlings can gain complexity with a few years of cellar aging.
