Shiraz

Shiraz is an affordable red wine that is sometimes referred to as Syrah, which is the name of the grape that Shiraz is made from. The Syrah grape variety grows in the French Rhone Valley, but it is the most cultivated and planted red wine grape variety in Australia. This grape is now so popular in Australia, it is known as the Australian grape. The grape variety was not popular until the 20th century, when the variety was planted in Australia, where Shiraz received its name. Shiraz boasts as a deep, strong wine with varying tastes, depending on where and how it was cultivated. If grown in warmer regions, the Shiraz variety will produce different flavors. Winemakers continue to experiment with the taste and complexity of the wine by using different kinds of oak. The grape variety yields a nice fruit flavor and light tannins, if it is traditionally made. Shiraz wine tends to have peppery spice notes, and includes chocolate, licorice, or blackberry notes. When paired with food, Shiraz goes well with rich poultry dishes or spicy foods, including Mexican or Cajun dishes. The wine also goes nicely with beef dishes, or just makes for a nice wine just by itself.

Yalumba The Octavius Barossa Valley 2017

A very deep purple, red in color. This wine showcases Shiraz with its depth of Barossa Valley and the alluring, aromatic freshness of Eden Valley. Vibrant aromas of dark cherries, anise and red raspberry. A distinctive wine with richness and dark berry, fruit compote palate. Perfectly balanced, elegant and refined.

Enjoy with beef filet, roast beetroot and horseradish, or Korean fried cauliflower.

Review:
For long an Australian icon, this has really lightened up its act. For the better. The sort of exotic perfume-lifted lilac floral-seldom seen across shiraz from such a warm zone. Pulpy and juicy in the mouth, rather than over-extracted and desiccated. A beautiful sash of oak, directing a cavalcade of clove, five spice and ample blue to dark fruit references along a skein of peppery acidity. Riveting complexity and the feeling of something far lighter than the ABV suggests. This is a thrilling wine. There are no two ways about it.

A polished shiraz that draws you very deep on the palate, with blackberry, tar, dark-chocolate and walnut character. It’s full and very tight, with tension and focus. Thick, silky texture. Unique wine that’s aged for 23 months in winery-produced 100-liter French and American-oak octaves. Drink or hold.

Yalumba The Steeple Shiraz 2018

Yalumba The Steeple Shiraz is made from 100 percent Shiraz.

The nose is immersed in blueberries and plums leading into very inviting red spices, cranberries and pomegranate. Medium to full-bodied, it is generous with plump fruits and dark cherries. Textural, intriguing and velvety smooth.

Review:

This reminds us of the classic Australian reds of the 1950s and 1960s. Very deep and rich, yet so vibrant and youthful, this has fresh-herb and savory complexity alongside the black-fruit aromas. Great muscular tannins on the powerful palate give it wonderful vitality and clarity. Just a touch of eucalyptus. Very long finish with a wonderfully velvety texture. From vines planted in 1919. Excellent aging potential.
