Wine from Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes

Located in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region in the Rhône Valley, Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes is named in honor of the small 18th century oratory (oratoire in French) that overlooks its original 49.5-acre vineyard plot. In 1880, Edouard Amouroux became the owner of this parcel, which was planted to Syrah, and contained the small oratory that had been dedicated to St. Mark. By the 1920’s the Amouroux family was already bottling their own Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine from this vineyard parcel naming their vineyard Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes. As a tribute to its rich history, the wine’s distinctive label design has remained unchanged since its original design in 1926.
The Estate has prided itself on respecting time-honored wine making traditions while at the same time, incorporating modern techniques to ensure the highest quality wine possible are made each year. In 2006, Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes converted to organic farming and uses a horse-drawn plow to till the vineyard’s soils. After the grapes are hand-harvested, they are transported to winery in small baskets only to undergo vigorous selection process with a double sorting table. Depending on the vintage, the grapes are then partially (or wholly) destemmed and can be co-fermented with different varieties in order to produce a complex and pedigreed wine.
Today, the estate comprises a total of 100-acres showcasing the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region’s four great soil types: galets roulés (rounded stones over sandy clay), safres (sandy soils), éclats calcaires (limestone-based clays) and red-sandstone. The iconic estate produces three distinctive wines – a red and white Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a limited release cuvée, “Les Choregies du Clos de L’Oratoire des Papes”, produced only in exceptional years.

Luis XIV Fondillon Oro 50 years NV is made from 100 percent 100% Monastrell (Mourvedre). Only 24 9 liter cases produced.
The wine is produced in the village of Cañada, in the subarea of Alto Vinalopó in the province of Alicante. Made from 100% Monastrell planted on traditional dry land as bush vines, at 550-580 meters above sea leval and enjoying a Mediterranean climate with great marine influence due to the easterly winds.
Fondillon 50 years is mahogany in color with orange tile rim, medium layer and great density. On the nose, it has a very deep aroma of old wood, black tea and carob. In the mouth, it has a sweet entry balanced by a rich high acidity. Its aromas are long, almost eternal and very intense. It tastes like old mahogany, a very old barrel and bygone times.

The NV Fondillón Luis XIV has the subtitle Edad Superior a 50 años (over 50 years old), and it's a dark mahogany, bottled from a single barrel that has the specific profile of a very old wine greatly concentrated by age, which tends to make it similar to other very old and concentrated wines, be it a Mediterranean rancio or a very old Moscatel. It has notes of bitter chocolate, coconut and iodine, carob beans (algarroba) and some bittersweet sensations. It's dense and concentrated, and the palate is pungent, with very intense flavors and a bitter twist in the finish. This has 16.3% alcohol, 6.45 grams of acidity and 34 grams of sugar, but it comes through as very dry. The wine is long and extraordinary, but it just doesn't have any Fondillón character after decades of concentration by evaporation. The price is ludicrous. Fondillón is an extraordinary treasure of Alicante, a rare product, made from late harvest, non-botrytised grapes, unfortified, but with a final alcohol of no less than 16%. Intense, aged, but not sweet (deliciously not more than 45g/l). Fab with cheese or dark chocolate. The wines have to be a minimum of 10 years; this release is more than 25 years. Poggio al Tesoro Sondraia 2020 is made from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.
Sondraia is the flagship Bordeaux blend from Poggio al Tesoro, the Allegrini family's estate in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast. A Bolgheri Superiore of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc — ripe, structured, and Mediterranean, with cassis, herb, and a saline lift.
Review:
Blackcurrants, violets, pine needles, bark, and dark chocolate. Medium- to full-bodied with refined and polished tannins and a long and beautiful finish. The finish is fantastic with a crunchy character and hints of dark chocolate. Best after 2025 but already a joy to taste.

The nose is all pepper and savory spices at first, before black cherries, currants and a bit of dark chocolate pop through. The berries and chocolate take over on the palate, but the wine is anchored by a savory salinity and more peppery heat. A wine that overdelivers for its price point.

The Poggio al Tesoro 2020 Bolgheri Superiore Sondraia (in a heavy bottle) is a big wine on all levels, with dark fruit, spicy bay leaf, exotic curry leaf, rose, tea and barbecued spice. The wine is actually quite rich, broad and textured in terms of mouthfeel. No part of the palate is untouched, as it is swept over with sweet tannins and very generous fruit. It is almost too much of good thing, with a 15% alcohol content. This is a production of 45,000 bottles.

Displaying a dark red/garnet color, the 2020 Sondraia is made from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. It’s forward with oak-spiced aromas of toasted vanilla bean, cedar, cassis, sage, and black licorice. Full-bodied, it’s surprisingly light on its feet, with evenly balanced acidity, a supple texture, and ripe tannins. Its oak needs time to integrate, as it’s quite forward as well on the palate, but for a luxurious style, it’s going to do well if cellared appropriately. Drink 2026-2040.
