Winery: Chartron et Trebuchet

The Chartron et Trebuchet Estate
Owners of Premiers and Grands Crus in Puligny-Montrachet since 1859 with the Domaine Jean Chartron, Jean-René Chartron founded the Maison Chartron et Trébuchet in 1984 with Louis Trébuchet, manager of a wine trading company.
Vincent Sauvestre acquired the company in 2004. His objective is to continue to promote the great white wines of Burgundy, whilst respecting and perpetuating the quality work achieved by Jean Chartron and Louis Trébuchet.

The Maison Chartron et Trébuchet specialises in producing great white Burgundy wines. The know-how of the winemakers begins with a radical selection of the very best plots: the highest-quality terroirs of the Côte are chosen and the grapes are carefully monitored throughout the ripening period. Grapes are hand-picked when the balance between acidity and sweetness is at its prime: the fruit must not be too ripe so that the full potential of the terroir is maintained, including its acidity, to ensure that the wines age properly. All of the winemaking is done in casks: the alcoholic fermentation is followed by malolactic fermentation. A proportion of 20 to 40% of new barrels is used, depending on the appellations and the vintage. Wines are left to age for 12 to 18 months depending on the appellations.

The Chartron et Trebuchet Vineyards
Chartron et Trébuchet's vineyards are all planted on Limestone and Clay based soils. In average, the age of the vines is 30 years old.

Review:

"A deep, rich and mineral-laced style of Condrieu, Niero’s 2014 Condrieu Chéry is loaded with notions of apple blossom, honeyed tangerine, smoke and citrus. Coming all from the famed granite soils of the Chéry lieu-dit (which is one of the top terroirs in Condrieu and consist of mostly 50- to 80-year-old vines), this medium to full-bodied beauty has plenty of mid-palate depth, good acidity and a focused, yet lengthy feel on the palate. Aged 12 months in 60% stainless steel and 40% in oak, it’s a terrific success in this less than straightforward vintage.- Jeb Dunnuck"

Brilliant yellow-gold. Powerful peach, melon and tangerine aromas, backed by floral and honey nuances. Silky and open-knit, showing very good heft and thrust to the juicy citrus and pit fruit flavors. Rich yet lively thanks to a core of acidity that drives a long, ginger-accented finish. Textbook Condrieu, and the type I'd drink with decadent foods, like sweetbreads or Veal Oscar. Blue cheeses would also work well.-Tanzer 93 Points

Grand Veneur Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge Les Origines 2013

Deep and brilliant, purple-red colour. An exciting nose with aromas of black fruit (blackcurrant, cherry) spices and vanilla. This great aromatic complexity is found on the palate : the spices and ripe fruit appear with an elegant woodiness and harmonious tannins. The finish has good aromatic length and introduces a touch of liquorice and pepper.

A terrific Châteauneuf du Pape with great concentration and finesse.

Best between 2 and 20 years. Best to decant if young (less than 5 years old).

Soil type Extreme north of Châteauneuf du Pape. This plateau is made with a high quantity of red clay mixed with rocks. This area is considerated to be one of the best to produce rich and powerful red wines. By definition, LES ORIGINES will always deliver a great complexity and ageing potential. Winemaking & ageing Harvest is sorted by hand, destemmed and crushed. Fermentation temperature is controlled at 30°C. Vatting period of 18 to 20 days. Matured in vats (grenache) and in oak casks (syrah and mourvèdre).

Reviews:

Tarry and fleshy in feel, with a bittersweet cocoa note framing the thickly layered core of warmed fig, dark currant preserves and lightly mulled plum fruit flavors. Lots of tobacco, Turkish coffee and licorice root details fill in on the finish, which leaves a broad wake. Best from 2018 through 2028. 8,000 cases made. - 93 Points Wine Spectator

Review:

Lots of flower petal, dark fruit and hits of bark. Full body, round tannins and a flavorful finish. A complete and delicious red. Better in 2017, but why wait?"

- James Suckling (June 6th 2015), 92 pts

"The blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Carmenere and 20% Syrah is an expressive array of deep, black fruit and spice. A vein of chocolate sweetens violets petals and the texture and density of the wine is impressive to the finish. Aged in French oak for 14-16 months. A true-blue match with red meat. - Meridith May"

- The Tasting Panel (Publisher's Picks, April 2016), 92 pts

"Rustic aromas of baked berry fruits, black olive, herbs and eucalyptus lead to a forward, fairly tannic palate. An herbal flavor profile includes olive, blackberry, plum and spice notes, while the finish on this Cabernet-led blend tastes peppery and herbal, which is nothing unusual for Chile. Drink through 2020."

Review:

Vivacious and peppery, this delicately framed Côte-Rôtie offers crisp black-cherry and berry flavors accented by savory truffle, leather and spice. Fine, rigid tannins and penetrating black-fruit flavors still need time to integrate. Hold till 2020.- Wine Enthusiast (March 2018), 92 pts
