Product Description

Composition is a remarkable collaboration between Bertrand de Villaine, co-owner of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, and Katrina Rank, a talented Oregon-based winemaker. Together, they bring a uniquely Franco-Oregonian perspective to Pinot Noir, merging Burgundian philosophy with the vibrant expression of Willamette Valley terroir.

The fruit is sourced from carefully selected vineyards in Oregon's Willamette Valley, where the cool maritime climate and volcanic soils produce Pinot Noir of remarkable finesse and complexity. Aged 10 months in oak barrels with 30% new oak, the wine is crafted to highlight purity of fruit while allowing gentle structural support. 13% alcohol.

The Composition Pinot Noir delivers a light and perfumed style with layers of red cherry, wild strawberry, and subtle floral notes, supported by fine-grained tannins and bright, refreshing acidity. A wine of elegance and restraint that reflects the harmony between two great winemaking traditions.

Winery: Composition

Composition is a partnership between Bertrand de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Katrina Rank. Together they produce a single vineyard and sustainably farmed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Oregon's Willamette Valley. The backbone of Composition is a conscientious approach to farming and the pure expression of terroir.

Pinot Noir is a synonym for Burgundy for many, but it also beautifully expresses Oregon’s specific climate and terroir. And Chardonnay speaks the truth! Bertrand likes to say, “If your Chardonnay is excellent, everything else follows.”

Bertrand de Villaine went to college in Oregon and always kept that part of the world in mind, with a dream to one day make wine from these vineyards. He and his wife were thinking about that project when they met Katrina Rank in 2016 at a conference in Bourgogne. The conversation developed quickly on the subject and a year later, the first vintage of Composition was produced from the Willamette Valley and released in a few markets in the United States in 2018.

Bertrand and Katrina both knew they wanted vineyards that expressed the unique terroir of Willamette Valley and were sustainably farmed. Their focus is on single-vineyard wines. Pursuing excellence from grape to glass, they’re constantly evolving their vision, with conscientious approaches to farming and the pure expression of terroir — the backbone of Composition. Their growers share their sensibility and approach.

Starting with the 2021 vintage, Composition now draws from two distinct vineyard sources, marking a shift from its inaugural release. The team is thrilled with the results. The Chardonnay originates from a single vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills, where older, dry-farmed, and biodynamically cultivated vines contribute to its character. The Pinot Noir is sourced from one of Oregon’s historic vineyards in the Chehalem Mountains, aptly named Chehalem Mountain Vineyard. Originally planted by Dick Erath during the early days of the Willamette Valley, the site remains on its own roots and continues to be farmed using biodynamic practices.

Despite the challenges of distance, language differences, and occasional philosophical nuances, Bertrand, Katrina, and their team share a unified vision for crafting exceptional wines. The resulting wines are impeccably balanced, showcasing elegance and a clear sense of place. Each bottle reflects the Willamette Valley’s most harmonious sites, thoughtfully matched to their respective varietals.

Belle Glos Clark And Telephone Vineyard Pinot Noir 2024

Belle Glos Clark and Telephone Vineyard Pinot Noir is made from 100 percent Pinot Noir.

The Clark & Telephone Vineyard was established in 1972 and planted with “own root” Martini clone vines. Located just 13 miles from the ocean and situated on a west-facing slope, this vineyard experiences weather patterns that pull from west to east to bring cool fog and coastal breezes inland until August when Santa Ana winds begin.

We harvested early in the morning so the fruit would arrive at the winery while the grapes were still cool to preserve their vineyard-fresh flavors. After destemming (but not crushing) the berries, we cold-soaked the must for 14 days to soften the skins and allow for ideal extraction. During fermentation in a combination of closed and open-top stainless steel fermenters, we used both punch-down and pump-over techniques to extract color and phenolics. We aged the wine in 100% French oak (60% new) for up to 12 months. After the wine underwent malolactic fermentation, we racked it twice before bottling.

Deep ruby red in color with lush aromas of ripe cherry, nutmeg, dark chocolate and holiday baking spices. Bold and complex flavors of black plum, crushed raspberry and blueberry pie linger on the palate. The texture is rich and lively, and leads into a warm and structured finish.

Fullerton Three Otters Pinot Noir 2024

Fullerton Three Otters Pinot Noir is made from 100% Pinot Noir - 7-40 years old

This Willamette Valley blend hails mainly from three different vineyards in the north, east, and south of the Willamette Valley, with a smaering from five of Fullerton's other sites. The soils of the vineyards represent the breadth and diversity of the Willamee Valley with both sedimentary- and volcanic-based soils.

Blueberry and ripe strawberry with a dash of baker’s spice, bramble, and herbs. The palate carries the fruit forward elegantly with balanced tannins following. Intriguing complexity and depth—an impressive wine for all.

This wine comes from 100% destemmed rotator barrels fermented at ambient temperature reaching a peak temperature of 73° F. The rotator barrel spun twice daily during fermentation yielding a gentle extraction. After fermentation, the wine went through a three-week extended maceration, allowing the tannins to polymerize, soffening the wine. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels and three months in tank, the wine was then bottled after filtration.
This wine is handled very gently in the cellar allowing the nuances of the delicate fruit to be preserved and the wine to be very approachable in its youth. We have a preference for pump-overs versus punch-downs for its smoother extraction and softening effect on the tannin. To retain freshness and verve we age most of the wine in tank. However, we softened up and rounded out about 25% of the blend in barrel. The result is a fresh, fruit forward, yet earthy and intriguing, Pinot Noir.

Serve this wine slightly chilled, and pair it with dishes of earthy mushrooms, like chanterelles and morels, light cuts of meat, charcuterie and cheese.

Tasting Notes

Strong typical Pinot Noir characters are the distinguishing features of this wine, together with the balance of flavour. Made from just one small portion of Pinot grapes that are carefully spur pruned in winter, then meticulously looked after over the summer to eventually be handed from the vineyard team to the winemaking team to carry on the intense care and attention to detail that is needed to make the best Pinot Noir.

Winemakers Notes

The favourite wine of our winemakers to make as it really extends all of their skills from working with the small open-top fermentation tanks, which allow for constant hand plunging of the grape skins ( a small wooden plunger constantly pushes the skins below the surface of the juice) to selecting a variety of different French oak barrels that the wine will mature in for more than twelve months. The real skill is in the blending, as not all the barrels will make the grade for our top Pinot Noir. Days are spent tasting and re-tasting barrels and blends looking for the elusive blend that conveys the smooth velvet texture of Pinot Noir.
