La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 2015

La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 is made from 90% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano

The 2015 Gran Reserva 904 Tinto offers great aromatic complexity, with notes of wild strawberry, red cherry, plum, blackberry and cranberry combined with aromas of tobacco, brioche, ground coffee, caramel, cedar and cinnamon blossom. The alcohol and acidity are elegantly balanced on the palate and its polished, gentle tannins and freshness provide a smooth and refined mouthfeel. Fine, delicate and very long aftertaste, that will continue to be rounded with time in the bottle, making this new Gran Reserva 904 a wine with great cellaring potential.

Especially recommended with all kinds of meat and stews, seasoned fish and desserts with chocolate or red fruit toppings. Perfect as an after-dinner drink.

Review:

A perfumed nose of plums, mulberries, mushrooms, caramel, sweet tobacco and sweet spices. Full-bodied with velvety, fine tannins and lively acidity. Balanced and supple with a creamy texture. Delicate and precise with a long, polished finish.

"Shimmering garnet. Aromas of cherry, blueberry, candied flowers, tobacco and coconut pick up a smoky overtone with air. Smooth and fleshy on the palate, offering ripe red and blue fruit, mocha, cola and spicecake qualities that tighten up on the back half. Finishes long and supple with repeating spiciness, even tannins and a lingering suggestion of red berry preserves. Faustino Gran Faustino I Rioja Gran Reserva 2004

Faustino Gran Faustino I Rioja Gran Reserva is made from 86% Tempranillo, 9% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo.

Gran Faustino I 2004 is a wine that has a very positive evolution as far as tasting aspects are concerned. We have a garnet-colored, medium-bodied, bright wine with a long life ahead of it. It is clean and intense on the nose. Tertiary aromas predominate, with a marked presence of prunes and ripe fruit, perfectly blending with spicy and balsamic aromas from the barrel ageing. Black pepper is also present, reminding us that the Graciano is part of this very particular blend. It is on the palate where this great wine shows its elegance. Its entrance is subtle, but it gradually unleashes a flood of sensations. Notes of licorice, candied fruit, cocoa, and again, the balsamic notes we found on the nose also appear. A well-balanced acidity and polished tannins highlight its silkiness and roundness. It’s a wine brimming with nuances and complexity, very plush, with a sweet and delicate finish.

Classy wine with engaging tobacco, smoke and earthy aromatics. Complex and energetic with spice and red fruit flavours whooshing through the palate in a seductive style. A satisfying aged wine with thrillingly well-integrated new oak and a long, savoury finish.

Product Description

Finca Valpiedra Reserva is made with 90% Tempranillo, 6% Graciano, 4% Maturana Tinta.

The varied soils and friendly climate of Rioja Alta give this wine its inimitable style and character. Harvested at the end of September, this wine shows ripeness and development of flavor not typically expressed with such finesse.

Purple with ruby highlights, this wine shows up-front aromas of raspberries and black cherries with undertones of leather and spice. On the palate, it is expansive and rich.

Pair with lamb and apricot tajines, prime rib, tomato stews, or green lentil-based dishes.

Review:

“Very Bordeaux-like in style, right down to having a slightly animal note on the nose, this is a very fresh, nuanced wine for such a hot vintage. Combining Tempranillo with 6% Graciano and 4% Maturana Tinta, it's stylishly oaked, with filigree tannins, savoury black fruit and wonderful palate length.”

Winery: Valpiedra

Finca Valpiedra winery is owned by the Familia Martínez-Bujanda. More than a century has passed since the family’s patriarch, Joaquín Martínez-Bujanda, began making wine in 1889; now his great-grandchildren, Carlos and Pilar, are carrying on the tradition. They realized their dream of fully expressing wine from a single vineyard by opening Finca Valpiedra in 1999.

As a testament to the quality of Finca Valpiedra’s wine, the estate has been inducted into the exclusive organization Grandes Pagos de España. The group’s mission is to defend and propagate the culture of “Pago” wine, meaning wine produced in a specific terroir that reflects the distinct personality of the soil and climate. To become a member, a vineyard must surpass strict quality standards and also exhibit a degree of uniqueness in terms of soil, climate or grape variety that sets it apart from the surrounding area. The association’s membership includes 25 estate wineries throughout Spain.

Located in the Rioja Alta section of DOCa Rioja, the estate is nestled into a sharp meander in the Ebro River, providing a microclimate and terroir unlike anywhere else in the region. The vineyard is comprised of 80 hectares divided into 9 plots of loam and limestone soil. The soil contains a multitude of pebbles from the river, which gives Finca Valpiedra its name (“Stone Valley”). The stones also contribute to the land’s natural ability to trap heat and accelerate grape ripening. Finca Valpiedra’s soil is high in calcium, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, copper and iron, all of which contribute to its acidity and fertility.

Located at an altitude of approximately 1400 feet above sea level, the climate is Atlantic-Mediterranean with hot summer days and cool nights, ideal for full grape ripening while maintaining freshness. The vineyard is protected from the cold northern winds by the surrounding Sierra de Cantabria Mountains. Its unique microclimate provides an optimal amount of sunshine and rain (nearly 16 to 19 inches per year).

The primary variety grown in Finca Valpiedra is Tempranillo, with some land dedicated to Mazuelo, Graciano and Cabernet Sauvignon. The average vine age is 35 years, and all grapes are hand-harvested and sorted.

Winemaking Philosophy

Although the 21st century has heralded modernization and automation in winemaking, the mission of the Familia Martínez Bujanda has always remained true to the original intent of Joaquín Martínez Bujanda from over a century ago – control of the vineyard is essential to making wine. Each generation has sought to best utilize each location, taking into account the altitude, microclimate, soil, and the characteristic unique to each terroir, to create wines that capture its essence. The vineyards are nourished with organic matter and employ modern and traditional winemaking techniques to produce the best-quality wine possible from each parcel. The goal at Finca Valpiedra is to produce innovative wine that will flourish into the next century, while adhering to time-honored traditions. The results are wines of elegance, style and sophistication.

Fefinanes Albarino de Albarino 2021

Fefinanes Albarino de Albarino is 100 percent Albarino

Fresh fruit aromas of apricot and peach slices with notes of lemon and green apple. Pretty notes of honey and wet nutmeg, and the mouth is round, clean, and pleasant with baked apple, honey, and lemon.

This is a classic Albariño which is good young, but actually improves over two to three years and remains quite drinkable for up to five years. Owner Juan Gil comments that the wine really starts to come into its own in June/July, and he actually prefers it 18 or more months after it's made. A Fefiñanes "vertical" of three or four vintages can provide some most interesting surprises.

Review:

"One of those textbook Albariños that delivers the goods, year in, year out, this is a very pure expression of the grape, with no lees ageing at all. Sourced from vineyards in the Cambados sub-region, all on decomposed granite soils, it has lovely pear and lime zest flavours and engaging focus, minerality and stony freshness. Hard to beat at the price. 2022-26"
