Domaine Laroche Chablis Les Vaudevey Premier Cru 2020

2020 VINTAGE: The harvest 2020 in Vaudevey started on September 1st. The harvest yields were impacted by drought, particularly for the certain plots that were well exposed to the sun. The ripening of the grapes was slow, which helped aromas to concentrate and acidity to be kept.

GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Chardonnay

VINEYARD: Domaine Laroche is one of only three proprietors in Premier Cru Les Vaudevey, owning 24.61 acres of the 102.13 acres premier cru vineyard. Planted on steep slopes of 30-50% at 640 to 771 feet with an eastern to southeastern exposure, the vines enjoy morning to early afternoon sun. The coolest valley of the Domaine Laroche vineyard—always the last one to be harvested.

VINE DENSITY: 5,880 vines per hectare (2,380 vines per acre); massal selection from Laroche old vines for the new plantings VITICULTURE: One man, one plot: There are more than 30 people who are dedicated to caring for the 90-plus hectares (222.39 acres) of Domaine Laroche vineyards, with each person responsible for only one plot. This tailor-made approach allows them to manage the vineyards with precision, speed and accuracy.

PRESSING: The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand. Whole bunches are pressed in a pneumatic press, and then the must settles for 12 hours at 10° C to 12°C (50° F to 54° F) in large vats.

FERMENTATION: The must ferments for 3 weeks, 74% in stainless steel vats and 26% in French oak barrels.

MATURATION: Nine months in 72% stainless steel tank, the rest in barrels. only 5% new oak in total. FILTRATION: Minimal filtration is used to preserve and maximize the natural character of the wine. ALCOHOL: 12% TASTING NOTES: Bright gold in color. Hints of minerality layered with citrus notes of lemon peel. Nervy, racy and lively. Chavy-Chouet Volnay Premier Cru Sous La Chapelle 2023

Chavy-Chouet Volnay 1er Cru Sous La Chapelle is made from 100 percent Pinot Noir.

Total acreage for this wine: 0.1 hectare (0.25 acres)Planting density: 10 000 vines per hectares

Age of the vines: 10 years
At the bottom of the slope in the heart of Volnay, this plot lies on clay-sand soil.

Volnay is located on the steep sloping hill of Chaignot in the Côte de Beaune, where the southeast facing vines have been valued for centuries. These vineyards have been valued and exploited for centuries. Long before the French Revolution, the harvests of Volnay went to the Knights of Malta, the Abbeys of Saint-Andoche d’Autun and Maizières, or to the Dukes of Bourgogne and their successors, the Kings of France.

Volnay has a reputation for being among the most delicate, feminine of the Bourgogne wines. Limestone soil dominates the area, with deeper, gravelly soils at the foot of the slope, where Chavy Chouet’s vines are located.

This Volnay is full of character; broad and fruity. Smooth and elegant tannins make it a feminine wine, marked by aromas of black berries and leather.

Fruity flavors and typical nutty nuances.  The Genevrières parcels are located in the heart of Meursault's southern premiers crus. "Genevrieres" takes its name from the presence, years ago, of the juniper bushes which covered its slope, and it is sometimes said that the tang of this aromatic berry can be detected in the wine.

Domaine Chavy-Chouet Premier Cru Meursault Les Charmes 2023

Chavy-Chouet Premier Cru Meursault Les Charmes is made from 100 percent Chardonnay.

This fine and sensual wine, with hints of blossom and roasted hazelnut, has a concentration that makes it discreet in its youth but powerful over time.

Delas Hermitage Les Grandes Vignes Ligne de Crete 2019

Delas Hermitage Les Grandes Vignes Ligne de Crete is made from Syrah.

The nose discloses aromas of spice and leather intertwined with deep berry aromas (blackberry, redcurrant) and heady floral notes, liquorice and incense. Its richness, complexity and elegance are by no means a contradiction. The finest granite soils of the Hermitage hillside are to thank for this wine's incredible minerality and finesse. The wine is rich and dense on entry to the palate, where it shows an elegant, broad and flavorsome character. The ripe, smooth and well-integrated tannins contribute to the wine's powerful yet harmonious structure. The palate reveals the same aromas as those found on the nose with nuances of blueberry, raspberry, violet and bitter chocolate. Ligne de Crête is characterized by its exceptional structure, harmony and balance.

This remarkably smooth and elegant wine makes the perfect partner for a pigeon pie, beef tartare ravioli or a roast fillet of deviled duckling with cranberries. It also makes an excellent choice for woodcock, hare "à la Royale" or even a roast rack of lamb in a herb crust.

Review:

Whiffs of espresso, ore and charred meat mingle into thunderous flavors of crème de cassis and roasted plums in this wine. A single-site expression of Les Grandes Vignes from a ripe yet fresh vintage, it's a showstopping Syrah marked with a creamy texture and ripe tannins. Hermitage is not known for youthful pleasures but this rare bottling embraces the hedonism of adolescence along with its potential to gain power and complexity far beyond 2050. Anna Lee C. Iijima

Inky ruby color. Expansive, smoke- and mineral-accented black and blue fruits, licorice, smoky bacon, mocha, violet and licorice on the highly perfumed nose. Appealingly sweet, mineral-accented cassis, boysenberry, fruitcake, floral pastille and vanilla flavors show superb depth and become spicier with aeration. Shows superb detail and mineral lift on the youthfully tannic, extremely persistent and incisive finish, which features resonating floral and exotic spice notes.

Winery: Chapelle de Blagny

The hamlet of Blagny is a Cistercian heritage site and even during the earlier gallo-roman period it is believed that the inhabitants cultivated vines.

From the 12th century to the 18th, Blagny belonged to the Cistercian order established in the nearby abbey of Maizières and to this day remains a chapel built in the 15th century.

As commented by several 18th century writers, it appears that the monks’ knowledge of winegrowing had already built up the reputation of Blagny for its fine wine. After the revolution, the domain was sold in 1793 as national property and then acquired in 1811 by an ancestor of the present owners; the five following generations have all been dedicated to maintaining the excellence of the family estate and today, this responsibility is in the hands of Jean-Louis de Montlivault. Etienne de Brichard is preparing himself for the job.

Wine making:

Grapes are handpicked then placed in crates to be carefully transferred to the vathouse; a pneumatic press is used for low pressure extraction of the must.

For the white wines, the must is racked in vats for 24 hours which gives time for the coarse solid matter to settle and immediately after this period, the clear juice is filled into oak casks (only a quarter of the casks are new). The alcoholic fermentation is a natural process without the addition of artificial yeasts; then follows the malolactic fermentation process.

About 14 months later, the wine is racked in vats, filtered and then bottled.

The red wine process starts with fermentation of the de-stalked grapes in vats for approx. 2 weeks during which the colour and the tannins in the grape skin are dissolved; when the sugar is changed into alcohol, the wine is filled into casks and, as for the white, bottled after about 14 months. A quarter of the number of casks is renewed each year.

Terroir:

The terroir of Blagny, which is not more than 40 hectares, comprises 20% of appellations yet "1er cru" of Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, universally known for excellence of their white wines. Soil, consisting of clay and limestone marl, are suitable for both reds than whites. Vineyards, grouped around the "hameau de Blagny", are located in the highest part of the Premiers Crus.

The vineyards are all located on the terroir of Blagny.
