Calcareous gravels deposited by the Tunuyan river in the South of Valle de Uco and by the Las Tunas river in the North of Valle de Uco have created the two most promising growing areas of Mendoza, which are only now being developed and explored, bringing a new dimension to the wines of Argentina.

This constant “fan favorite” certainly doesn’t let us down for the new vintage! With the yields lending to the smallest vintage in our Heritage Vineyard’s history, it certainly doesn't skimp in quality. Aromas of violet, lavender and cedar starts you down the path to a luscious, smooth and feminine 100% cabernet. Black fruits lead the charge here with a level of sucrosity that shockingly surpasses previous vintages. One phrase keeps coming back to us, “Liquid velvet!”.

From one of the earliest seasons on record and a fourth year of drought, the quality is high across the board. A mild winter caused early bud break, followed by a much longer bloom contributing to smaller grape clusters which led itself to a 20% reduction in crop size. An intense, compacted harvest began the first week of September and finished with a bang just six weeks later. The early and quick start was due to an unusually warm Spring that contributed to early vine development. Once again, we feel blessed with a 3rd straight vintage of astonishing quality. Product Description

78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17.6% Merlot, 3.6% Malbec and 0.8% Syrah.

The wine has a very rich purple, red-garnet color. Dark red and black fruit aromas like cherry, black cherry, blackberry and cassis, toasted oak, slight vanilla, with hints of maple syrup and allspice. On the palate this wine is medium full-bodied and slightly sweet with cherry, black cherry and blackberry fruit, toasted oak  and hints of maple syrup and clove spice. The mouthfeel is lush on the entry, lively in the mid-palate and finishes long with evident tannins and a hint of tartness

The Obelisco Estate
It is the Red Mountain reputation for quality that brought Doug Long and his partners together to collaborate on a new winery and estate vineyard. This was the dream location to plant the dream vineyard Doug Long had always wanted to do. Doug not only brings extensive wine making, wine distribution and business experience to this venture, he has history too...

In 1971, Doug and his two brothers planted their first vineyard high above Napa Valley on a property their father had purchased years earlier without any idea that the property was perfect for grapes. Doug and his brothers figured it out quickly and with encouragement from nearby wine makers, they began their adventure. By 1980, their reputation for fine grapes was growing quickly and in 1981, they started their first winery called David Arthur that went on to be named "Winery of the Decade" by Spectator in the year 2000. The 1997 vintage scored 99 points.

Doug attempted to "retire" to Gig Harbor WA. After two years and a realization that his golfing and fishing skills weren't likely to improve, he got the "itch" to do something else. With the encouragement of his beautiful wife Betsy (the beauty is not debated, but the "encouragement" might be), he explored and found Red Mountain in Eastern Washington. By 2004, the vineyard site was purchased and planted. Doug was able to put his long time theory of intensely planted vines into action. It is one of the most intensely planted vineyards in the wine world.

The first vintage was 2007. The partners were not even sure if it would be bottled. The vines were still relatively young. After sampling from the barrels and realizing that there was something special, the first bottling took place. This first offering was named "Best Cabernet in the State over $20" by Seattle Magazine and also received the esteemed "Double Gold" from the Seattle Wine Awards. The Obelisco vineyard theory was now a reality.

In 2011, Doug Long bought out his partners and friends, to assume full ownership of Obelisco and continues to strive for the finest grapes in the world. His philosophy is "that no effort and no expense is too much in growing fine grapes... grapes are 95% of the quality of wine". His philosophy comes through in the wine.

The Obelisco Vineyards
The 30 acre vineyard, designed and planted for the sole purpose of producing intensely complex and rich Red Wines, is located on a southwest facing slope bathed in sunlight throughout long daylight hours. With cool nights and the moderating effect of the Yakima River below, their new Obelisco Estate vineyard is perfectly situated to grow world class grapes noted for their structure, acidity and intense varietal character.

The vineyard is one of the most intensively planted in the State of Washington, with grape production limited to four pounds per plant. This limited production per plant allows for very intense fruit concentrations. The hand picked, estate grown fruit is aged in new French and American oak and crafted into distinctive varietals which are later blended to enhance the flavors of each wine we produce.

Chateau Beard La Chapelle Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2012

Appellation: Saint- Emilion

Composition: 90% Merlot,7% Cabernet Franc,3% Cabernet Sauvignon

Aging: Ageing is for 12 months.

Tasting Notes: Dark purple in the glass. Aromas of blackcurrant, vanilla and a touch of wood on the nose. At first taste you can tell this wine will take on some age. Rich and layered, but held back due to its youth. Soft tannins blend with black fruit flavors and a touch of mineral on the finish. Drink over the next 7 to 10 years. This vintage is more approachable at an early age then the previous two vintages.

Soil: Limestone-clay on the "côtes" and deep-lying sand on the "pieds de côtes".

Avg Age of Vines: Vines have an average age of 40 years.

Vinification: Grapes are picked by hand and machine, but manually sorted after destemming. The vinification is a traditional with three gentle pumping overs per day and with one or two rack and returns carried out during the period of fermentation. Total time in vat is between 3 to 4 weeks

Keermont Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

The 2014 vintage is the maiden release of Cabernet Sauvignon from Keermont Vineyards. All the grapes come from their Cottage Lane Vineyard on the mid-slopes of the Helderberg. This vineyard is situated on the crest of a ridge (320m above sea level) so has aspects ranging from East through North to West. It is very exposed resulting in small vines with low yields. This has allowed them to make a relatively fine grained Cabernet, but the clay soils translate to a wine with power, tension and fresh acidity.

Rich crimson red color. The nose is a complex mix of savoury notes: crushed herbs, violets, sandalwood, leather and some lovely bright red fruit. The palate is fine and yet powerful. Lush spicy red fruit is complimented by blueberry and bramble notes. Powerful tight-knit tannin and a very linear acidity afford the wine a long succulent finish. Drink 2017-2030

All grapes used in producing their wines are grown on Keermont Vineyards. Small parcels of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. This process is carried out gently and naturally in open top fermenters using traditional methods only. This wine spent 22 months maturing in 225 Litre French oak barrels before being bottled by hand without filtration. They produced just 3654 bottles. The wine was bottle matured in the Keermont cellar for a further 18 months before release.

VINTAGE REPORT
The season’s winter was generally mild, but became cold and wet towards spring time. Keermont experienced record rainfall and even snow on the mountains during August 2013. This allowed for good vine growth during the spring, but also increased the mildew pressure and resulted in an unusually large insect population. Fortunately neither of these had a major impact on our crop. Our soils stayed moist throughout the growing season thanks to moderate temperatures and we hardly had to irrigate at all before harvest. A series of heat waves in early February jolted us into harvest action. The vines, which had been very nurtured by all the moisture, suddenly started to show some signs of stress and we needed to pick quite a few of the blocks over a short period. The favourable growing conditions contributed to a healthy crop of 150 tons for Keermont Vineyards.

"The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is a new addition to the Keermont range. It comes from a single, low-yielding block, although it will not be labelled as such, from loamy soils around 300 meters above sea level. Most of the maturation is in 225-liter barrels with around 20% new oak. It has a straightforward bouquet, perhaps not quite as personality-driven as the Cabernet Franc at the moment, but developing pleasing graphite/pencil box scents with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, good body and presence in the mouth with that graphite theme continuing from the aromatics. Well balanced and harmonious towards the finish, I would afford this a couple of years in bottle to develop more varietal character. - Neal Martin"
