Merryvale Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is made from Chardonnay.

Merryvale Vineyards works out of a historic 1933 stone cellar in St. Helena — the first winery built in Napa Valley after Prohibition, and where the Mondavi brothers made their earliest wines. Owned by the Swiss Schlatter family since 1996, Merryvale draws on prized vineyard sites across Napa and Sonoma. This Sonoma Coast Chardonnay — barrel fermented and aged roughly ten months in about 30% new French oak — is the first Merryvale has sourced across cool-climate Sonoma Coast sites. DuMOL 'Isobel' Charles Heintz Vineyard Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is made from Chardonnay.

Founded in 1996, DuMOL is one of the Russian River Valley's benchmark producers of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, built on meticulous, small-lot winemaking under longtime winegrower Andy Smith. Merryvale Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2022 is made from Pinot Noir.

From the cool, fog-swept vineyards of the Sonoma Coast — including fruit from the celebrated Durell and Sunchase sites — this is Merryvale's elegant, Burgundian-minded take on California Pinot Noir. A mix of Dijon and heritage clones (667, Pommard, 777 and 828) was largely destemmed, fermented with native yeasts, and aged about ten months in roughly 40% new French oak — restraint that lets the fruit lead. Expect a perfumed, silky glass: black cherry, raspberry and dark berry lifted by forest floor, cola spice and a whisper of graham cracker, with bright acidity and fine, polished tannins carrying a long finish. Lovely now and over the next decade.

A wonderful interplay of brightness and savoriness captures the elegance of wines from the Sonoma Coast. Aromas of crushed red raspberries, sauteed mushrooms and wild blackberries. On the palate there’s red fruit and black pepper, with bright, crunchy acidity and taut tannins. The finish is long, with umami flavors. Medium-bodied. Drink or hold.

Clos du Val Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is made from Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Wine

This is Clos du Val's Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon — the house's classically styled, broadly sourced Cabernet drawn from vineyards across the valley floor and surrounding benches. The 2023 is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec and 4% Petit Verdot. It pours a deep ruby and opens with pure cassis and black cherry lifted by graphite, tobacco leaf, sweet brown spice and a whisper of cured herbs. Medium- to full-bodied and beautifully balanced, it is firm without ever turning hard, with fine-grained tannins, bright acidity and a long, silky, cocoa-dusted finish. A polished, food-friendly Napa Cabernet that drinks wonderfully now and will hold comfortably into the early 2030s — and, at this price, one of the genuine values in classic Napa Valley Cabernet.

Winery Info

Clos du Val was founded in 1972 in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley by French-born winemaker Bernard Portet and American proprietor John Goelet. Portet grew up at Château Lafite-Rothschild, where his father was technical director, and he set out to make Napa wines in a restrained, ageworthy Bordeaux idiom rather than the bigger, riper California style of the day. The bet paid off almost at once: at the legendary 1976 Judgment of Paris, Clos du Val's debut 1972 Cabernet was one of only a handful of California reds chosen to stand against first-growth Bordeaux — and in the celebrated ten-year rematch of that tasting, it finished first of all the wines. More than fifty years on, Clos du Val remains one of Napa's benchmark houses, its wines prized for elegance, balance and a graceful capacity to age. The engraving of the Three Graces on the label is a nod to the harmony the family has always chased in the glass.

Pago de los Capellanes Reserva is made from 100% Tempranillo.

After carefully monitoring the vineyards, the harvest date is set by the maturity of the grapes, which are collected and fermented separately. They are given a six-day pre-fermentation cold maceration below 14ºC, then about 30 days of alcoholic fermentation at a controlled 28ºC, after which the wine is drawn off without pressing the skins; malolactic fermentation is slow and relaxed at 20ºC. The wine is aged 18 months in new French oak barrels, racked into fresh barrels every six months, then blended and bottled without filtration, clarification or cold treatment.

Ruby red with pure, intense garnet tones. The bouquet has fine complexity, with ripe fruit — especially cherry, blueberry and blackcurrant — in harmony with good wood, spice (vanilla and coconut) and a liquorice undertone. The palate shows great balance: pleasing, sweet-tannined from ripe fruit and exuberant on a pleasant level of acidity. Clay and chalk soils; 100% French oak, medium toast. Uncork and decant one hour before serving at 16–18ºC.

This is poised and polished, with fine acidity and a lingering mineral note grounding the rich blackberry, cassis, and dried cherry fruit. It's framed out by scents of violets, tobacco, incense, and coffee-toffee. It'll make for a beautiful wine at the table over the next 7-10 years.

Pago de los Capellanes El Nogal is made from 100% Tempranillo.

A single-vineyard wine from the “El Nogal” parcel in the town of Mambrilla de Castrejón, grown at 850 meters (2,750 feet) above sea level. A hillside of tinto fino vines a short distance from the winery, with uninterrupted views of the Duero and the wind stirring the airy branches of the great walnut tree that guards the vineyard. Its sandy, stony soils, a sense of harmony and a special microclimate all seem to enhance the talent of its surroundings.

We have vinified the evocative grapes of this plot for the past several years to produce an endlessly charming wine — overwhelming, powerful and exquisite, with a vitalising force.

Walnuts, chocolate and dark fruit with a touch of thyme. The palate is full-bodied, with a luscious expression of fruit and fine-grained tannins, all retaining a broad sense of harmony. Drink or hold.

Pago de los Capellanes El Picon is made from 100% Tempranillo.

There are afternoons with indigo skies when we approach one of the oldest plots of the estate. Our stroll from the winery follows a line of cypress trees to the corner of a path, and this angle gives its name to our most exceptional vineyard. El Picón is the great symbol and the most profound reality — the sum of enigmas in a beautiful, pure fruit.

The grapes come from the El Picón plot, one of the oldest at the Pago de los Capellanes estate in Pedrosa de Duero: 1.6 hectares of clay-loam soil with surface gravel, very poor fertility and very low yields. The wine is aged 22 months in 225-litre, extra-fine-grain French oak barrels dried over 60 months.

Built in a classical long-aging style, the 2021 Parcela El Picón is 100% Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, aged 22 months in 225-liter extra-fine grain French oak barrels. Oak dominates the aromatic profile, emphasizing balsamic herbs such as bay leaf and menthol, vermouth-like tones and black fruit. Concentrated yet not tight on the palate, it combines flexible tannins, chalky texture and juicy freshness. Still very young, it promises greater nuance with time. Best approached no earlier than five years from now.

Really seductive, elegant nose with parma violet and almond blossom mingling among sage, cherry leaf and potpourri. Extremely well built, with a firm yet juicy core of plum, cherry, red apple and pomegranate. Cherry leaf poached in tea with smoky allure. Very persistent, with a long, beautiful tail of oregano, thyme, tarragon and saffron.

Davila L100 Loureiro Rias Baixas 2023 is made from Loureiro.

Adegas Valmiñor sits in the O Rosal valley, the warm southwestern corner of Rías Baixas where the Miño River meets the Atlantic. The Davila range is the winery's tribute to the native grapes of Galicia, and the L100 is its purest expression of Loureiro — a single-varietal bottling (the "100" is for 100% Loureiro) drawn from vines in O Rosal.

The fruit is picked late for extra ripeness, given a short cold maceration, and the wine then rests six months on its fine lees in stainless steel. The result is an aromatic, textured white — white flowers and bay leaf lifting over ripe stone fruit, with a broad, almost unctuous mouthfeel balanced by the saline freshness O Rosal is known for.

A natural match for shellfish, grilled fish, and fresh cheeses.

Valminor Albarino Rias Baixas is made from 100% Albarino.

Albariño is native to the Miño River region, which separates Galicia and the Rias Baixas DO from Portugal; it is prized for its characteristic citrus aroma and high acidity. Valminor Albarino presents a yellow-straw color. On the nose it shows a wide fruity range, with notes of fresh grapefruit, apricot and melon. In the mouth it combines fruity flavors and freshness with a rounded acidity, resulting in a balanced wine with an opulent taste and a slight spritziness.

Davila M100 White Blend Rias Baixas 2022 is made from Albariño, Caíño Blanco and Loureiro.

Adegas Valmiñor farms the O Rosal valley at the Atlantic edge of Rías Baixas, and the Davila range is where the winery showcases the native grapes of that corner of Galicia. The M100 is an O Rosal blend built around Albariño, rounded out with Caíño Blanco and Loureiro from the estate's older parcels.

The Albariño is cold-macerated and barrel-fermented in large French oak, aged three months on its lees with bâtonnage, then blended with the Caíño Blanco and Loureiro and given further time in tank. It is a richer, more structured Rías Baixas white — ripe orchard fruit and subtle spice over a firm mineral spine, deep and expressive on the palate.

Pairs beautifully with richer seafood, white meats, and creamy dishes.

Podrumi Krešić Graševina 2025 is made from 100% Graševina.

From the banks of the Danube in picturesque Šarengrad, Croatia, this wine reflects a story of love for the land and winemaking tradition. The Podrumi Krešić winery was founded by Dario Krešić, with the first vineyard planted in 2006. Today, six carefully selected vineyard sites between Šarengrad and Opatovac produce distinctive wines from the Slavonia region.

Graševina (also known as Welschriesling) is Croatia's most widely planted grape variety. This fresh, aromatic white wine offers notes of green apple, citrus, and white flowers, with a crisp acidity and clean finish.

Pairs well with fresh seafood, light salads, and appetizers.

Thorn Clarke Terra Barossa Shiraz is made from 100 percent Shiraz

Comments

Deep purple red. Aromas of ripe plums, cherries and earth with subtle notes of vanilla and cloves. The aromas follow through onto the palate with a fruit focus, subtle oak notes and soft, rounded tannins. The wine walks the line between medium and full bodied with a plush mouthfeel.

Vinification Notes

The grapes are crushed and de-stemmed into fermenters. Yeast is added immediately once in fermenter and the ferments are pumped over twice daily to maximise colour, tannin and flavour extraction. Cooling is used to ensure ferment temperatures remain in the 22-25 degree celcius range which will allow the fruit to display maximum fruit expression. Pressing then occurs approximately seven days after crushing and the wine is then put into predominately American oak to mature.

Aiurri Salas Rioja is made from 80% Tempranillo and 20% field blend.

Aiurri is a small Rioja Alavesa project built around biodiverse, single-plot winemaking. The Salas bottling comes from one plot of clonally biodiverse old vines rooted in rocky soils — mostly Tempranillo alongside Graciano, Monastrell and a handful of field-blend grapes — harvested in two passes and raised in French oak of varying sizes, with a further spell in concrete amphorae after the final blend.

Aroma: very expressive and complex, with red and fresh black fruit, spice and wild herbs. Flavor: a balance of freshness and depth, with fine tannins, abundant fruit and a long, persistent finish. Color: black cherry with a violet rim.

Ossian Capitel Verdejo is made from 100% Verdejo.

Capitel is a particular expression of Ossian's very old Verdejo vines — some approaching 200 years — grown on the sandy, pre-phylloxera soils of Nieva, a cool, high corner of Segovia south of Valladolid. It is made only in select years from a strict selection of exceptional old-vine fruit, fermented and aged in 600-litre French oak barrels on fine lees.

Color: old gold with greenish reflections. Aromas: surprisingly nuanced and profound. Flavors: fresh, full and finely detailed.

Chateau Hallet Sauternes 2022 is made from 100% Sémillon.

This classic Sauternes shows delicate aromas of honey, citrus, candied fruit and acacia. The 375ml half bottle is an ideal pour for two — a match not only for desserts but also for foie gras, roast meats and blue cheeses, and a delicious aperitif served well chilled.

Bihan Le Revelation Touraine Chenonceaux Sauvignon Blanc 2024 is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc.

From Maison Le Bihan in the heart of the Loire, this Touraine Chenonceaux “Revelation” pours a limpid, brilliant pale gold. The nose is intense and expressive, layered with floral aromatics, and the palate is dry and harmonious with a tangy edge that carries a long, lively finish.

A natural aperitif, it also shines alongside white meats, Loire asparagus and seafood.

Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Chaupin is made from 100 percent Grenache.

Chaupin is Domaine de la Janasse's single-parcel expression of old-vine Grenache, drawn mostly from the sandy-soiled Chapouin lieu-dit with smaller parts from La Crau and Janasse, some of the oldest vines planted in the early twentieth century. The Sabon family has run the estate near Courthezon since 1967 - today the brother-and-sister team of Christophe and Isabelle - and Janasse stands among Chateauneuf-du-Pape's benchmark producers. Partially destemmed and aged twelve months in foudre and demi-muids, Chaupin is the purest, most perfumed side of Grenache in its homeland.

All Grenache sourced mostly from the Chapouin lieu-dit with a splash from Janasse, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin shows a medium ruby hue followed by a pretty, perfumed, remarkably elegant profile. It has a core of sweet red and black berry fruits, absolutely heavenly Provençal aromatics of herbes de Provence, black olive, pepper, and flowers, plus ripe, velvety tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. Partially destemmed and aged 12 months in 70% foudre and 30% demi-muids, this heavenly 2023 will drink beautifully over the coming two decades. There are roughly 1,500 cases produced. Drink 2025-2045.

Even with an appreciable volume (11,300 cases), all of the 2021 Chardonnay Mannequin was barrel fermented and matured, spending eight months in 23% new French oak. Blended primarily from Santa Barbara and Sonoma sources (there is some Napa fruit, as well as 2.6% Viognier), it’s toasty on the nose, boasting notes of roasted cashew, grilled peaches and vanilla. It’s full-bodied, lush and easy to drink, with tropical fruit and pineapple on the finish. Enjoy it on the young side.

The 2020 ‘Machete’ is a proprietary blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache that was stored in 34% new French oak for 14 months before bottling. A soft texture greets you as green peppercorns greet you alongside black currant jelly, cigar ash and dark chocolate shavings with kirsch cordial notes. Considering the vintage, this is a really good effort.
