The Palacio de Bornos Estate
The winery was founded and began elaborating wine in 1870 in the town of La Seca, alongside the Appelation of Origin Rueda. In the late nineteenth century, its wines were well known throughout Castilla, expanding both nationally and internationally during the twentieth century.
In 1976, the fifth generation of the Sanz family broke away from the family tradition and started their own project with the construction of a new winery in the town of Rueda, thus beginning the most recent history of Palacio de Bornos. After more than thirty years of solid work, Palacio de Bornos has become one of the most widely renowned brands in the Appelation of Origin Rueda, and is present in the major markets worldwide.
Appelation of Origin Rueda is located in Castilla y Leon and is made up of 72 municipalities, which are located in the south of the province of Valladolid, west of Segovia and north of Ávila.
The character of the appellation is defined by three elements that result in high quality differentiated wines, with a strong personality:
- Grape Variety: Verdejo, indigenous to the area, resulting in crisp, pleasant and highly harmonious wines that invite you to continue drinking.
- Climate: continental with low rainfall, marked temperature contrasts between day and night and spring frosts, providing low yields and high quality.
- Soils: gravelly, permitting great ventilation and drainage.
The permitted grape varieties are: Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc, Viura, Palomino Fino, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
The Palacio de Bornos Vineyards
Palacio de Bornos boasts 220 hectares of their own vineyards, in the towns of Rueda, Pollos and La Seca.
When choosing a plot, the quality of the soil always takes precedence, with several analysis and soil samples being carried out to ascertain in detail its structure, thus ensuring that the vine will develop in the most appropriate soil. The soil of our vineyards is characterized by a calcareous clay subsoil and gravelly top soil, with a high concentration of boulders, allowing for good aeration and drainage, ideal characteristics for the successful development of the vine.
The special commitment to the vineyard have led Palacios Bornos to develop continuous research projects - mainly in the field of clonal selection, vine spacing, rootstock and foliar nutrition - through studies at experimental estates. The results, once positively tried and tested, are applied to the entire vineyard.
The aim has always been to plant the best vines in the best soil, in order to obtain the best wines.
Licenciado Rioja Reserva is made from 100% Tempranillo

Its freshness, oak ageing and high extraction guarantee a longevity of at least 10 years after the year of harvest.

Imperial Stag Reserva Iconic Red Mendoza is made from 55% Malbec and 45% Syrah.
This is a single vineyard planted with Malbec and Syrah with low yields (2.5 ton per acre for the Malbec and 3.5 ton per acre for the Syrah).
Bright and intense, full bodied red wine with violet hues at the lips. Elegant and savory, with silky persistence. Captivating aromas of currants, raspberries and other red fruits. Distinct tobacco and chocolate aroma melded with honey and amalgamated notes of pepper and nuts from its passage through French oak barrels.
Pair with venison of course ! but also duck, lamb and strong cheeses.
Review:
“Benefiting from the addition of 15% Cabernet Franc for the first time, this is a structured assemblage of Malbec and 40% Syrah. The oak is a little sweeter and more assertive than on the other Imperial Stag wines, but there’s plenty of palate weight to cope. Dark chocolate and Asian spice aromas are joined by plum and blackberry fruit. 2024-29.”

Trus Ribera del Duero Crianza is made from 100 percent Tempranillo.
Trus - an acronym for T-tierra (soil), R-roble (oak), U-uva (grape), S-sol (sun) - aims to reflect the uniqueness of each vintage, the aging potential of the wine in the bottle over the years.
Trus takes its roots in Palacios Vinos de Finca, the estate that was founded in 1999, then purchased by Javier Palacios who decided to focus on producing wines that express the purity and typicity of the Ribera terroirs.
The estate vineyards are located in Piñel de abajo, Pesquera de Duero, Quintanilla de Arriba. The winery also partners with winegrowers in Moradillo, Roa, Nava, Peñaranda or Baños de Valdearados. The clay-limestone soils of the high-altitude vineyards define the intense and complex personality of the wines. That is why Trus wines can be defined as classic, because an avant-garde look is the one that is directed towards the soil, preserving a typicity that is marked from its deepest roots.
Trus Crianza reveals a clean and bright cherry color with Burgundian tones at the rim. The nose is very intense and complex, offering ripe black fruits and liquorice aromas, toasty and vanilla nuances, spices and balsamic notes. The wine is tasty and unctuous on the palate, a perfect harmony between acidity and alcohol. Fresh and friendly mouthfeel, the ripe and soft tannins provide structure and great length. Long finish, ripe fruit aftertaste with a smoky and spicy finish.
Review:
"A plush and fabulous expression of variety and provenance with well-integrated alcohol, tannin and acidity. Will continue for several years and mellow. Be warned – one glass will be quickly followed by the next."

The “family reserve” from one of Rioja Alavesa’s most enduring family-run wineries. Wines destined to be the Reserva de la Familia label are made from a selection of grapes from old vines, those which combine a series of characteristics such as good orientation and exposure to the sun, and a poor soil which ensures low yields.
This wine is one of very few Rioja wines to blend Cabernet Sauvignon with Tempranillo. Bodegas Luis Cañas was granted permission by the D.O.Ca. to plant this variety as an experiment in the early 1980s.
Tasting notes
A brilliant garnet color with cherry hints on the edges.
The nose offers a complex variety of aromas that combine to bring an intense and sophisticated wine. Initially we can find very ripe berry fruits, smoky notes, raisins and liquor. After a certain amount of aeration, the cinnamon and jam notes appear and, with a little more time, the roasted and spiced aromas are noticed more clearly.
The palate is full, with a good presence of tannins, although these are offset by the glycerine like character, resulting in a fleshy sensation. Long lasting and lingering finish.
Winemaking and aging:
The grapes were cold macerated for 72 hours upon arrival at the winery. They underwent fermentation at 26º C in sealed cement tanks under constant thermal control, with the must pumped over daily. With the paste devatted by gravity, spontaneous malolactic fermentation took place after 45 days.
The wine was aged for 20 months in 50% medium toasted American and 50% French oak barrels. The barrel ageing not only adds tannins from the wood, but stabilizes the wine naturally. After the final racking, it was clarified in tanks with a small amount of natural egg white, decanted after 30 days and bottled directly without any type of filtration. Because this wine’s evolutionary cycle is quite slow, only corks of the highest quality available were used to ensure that it could be prolonged for several years.
