Paradigm Merlot is made from 98% Merlot - 2% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Deep ruby color with aromas of black cherry and plum, a hint of cedar and soft touch of toasty French oak. Seamless and silky across the palate with a nice mouthcoating texture and nicely balanced acidity for many food pairings. Review:
The Merlot is one of the first grapes to come in off the property. We pick at around 25 brix, with a pH of approximately 3.56–3.60', explains winemaker Mark Fasi. 'We ferment in stainless steel and press off before finishing primary fermentation'. The wine is then aged 18–20 months in roughly 50% new French oak. This Merlot epitomises pure elegance, offering gorgeous violet florals and pure fruit character complemented by beautiful brown baking spices. The wine is layered with lacy acidity and ultrafine, intricate tannins with a silky texture. It is perfectly integrated, delivering a harmonious and refined drinking experience. The winemaker is legendary Napa icon Heidi Barrett. Mark Fasi, who joined the winery in 2010 and has worked hand-in-hand with Barrett, takes the helm as winemaker with the 2023 vintage.

My First comment tasting this wine is "wow!" It's delicious; our flagship wine at Paradigm and it delivers. Dense, deep, ripe aromas of black berry and black cherry-like fruit layered with caramel and toastiness from a nice mix of French Oak barrels. Flavors coat the palate with matching notes in a classic Cabernet Sauvignon presentation. One of our best Cabs to date!

Owned and managed by the Harris family, Paradigm winery produced its first vintage in 1991 in Oakville with winemaker Heidi Barrett. A self-contained winery estate with 50 acres of vineyards, Paradigm maintains a hands-on approach to all winemaking and vineyard operations. The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon consists of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, and is aged in both new and used French oak for 20 months, then aged a further 20 months in bottle before release. The total production for this vintage was 5,544 bottles." With small amounts of Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, this is classic Oakville—from gravelly soils, it is textured and cohesive with structure to spare. A warm vintage, it shows power and intensity in the form of juicy black currant, clove and brown sugar, lengthy and richly inviting on the supple palate.

Tasted from magnum (although the estimated cost provided is for a 750-milliliter bottle), Paradigm's 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Estate comes from the winery's estate vineyard on the southwestern border of the Oakville appellation. A blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, all aged 20 months in French oak, it boasts seductive aromas of black cherries and cassis, plus ample cedar and vanilla. Rich, velvety and even a touch warm on the palate, it's open and opulent, ideal for drinking over the next decade or so.

The Paradigm Winery Estate
Paradigm Winery is located in the Oakville District of Napa Valley just west of Highway 29 and south of the Oakville Grade. The winery is owned and managed by Ren and Marilyn Harris, winegrowers with extraordinarily deep roots in Napa Valley. Marilyn is a third generation grower in Napa Valley and Ren has been farming here since the 1960’s.
They purchased Paradigm in 1976 and began producing wine with the 1991 vintage.
They farm sustainably.
Immediate neighbors of Paradigm Winery are Harlan, Martha’s Vineyard, Dominus, an Opus Vineyard, and a Quintessa Vineyard.
They take 1/3 of their grapes and the rest are sold to Nickel & Nickel, Duckhorn, and Groth.
The annual production is limited to 5,000 cases.
Heidi Peterson Barrett has been making our wine since the first vintage in 1991. Heidi's philosophy in making wines for Paradigm is simple: she feels that she is working with an extraordinary vineyard site that has been farmed impeccably for years. She lets the fruit from this vineyard express its quality and unique terroir with minimal intervention.
The wines are made in a classic style to go with food. The Cabernet Sauvignon barrel aged for 20 months in French oak (only about a third of that is new oak) and for 20 more months in bottle before release. The Merlot ages for 20 months in French Oak (third new) and 14 more months in bottle before release.

The Paradigm Winery Vineyard
In 1976, it was planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Chenin Blanc and White Reisling, all commonly grown in Napa Valley. But the Harrises quickly confirmed that the vineyard's soil and microclimate were perfectly tuned for growing the red Bordeaux varietals that inspired their passion for wine. The vineyard is now planted to four blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon totaling 32 acres, three blocks of Merlot totaling 18 acres, 2 acres of Cabernet Franc and one acre of Zinfandel.

Every now and then, in life and in wine, we are presented with unique opportunities to express ourselves and create something truly remarkable.
When rare opportunities arise, we need to capture, nurture and develop them so that their potential is fulfilled. So when Torbreck was given the opportunity to work with one of the most famous vineyards in the Barossa Valley, it became almost inevitable that the resulting wine would be truly remarkable.
In 2003, Torbreck growers and fourth generation descendants of the Seppelt family, Malcolm and Joylene Seppelt, asked our winemakers to create for them a small batch of Shiraz from their old Gnadenfrei vineyard in the sub-region of Marananga.
Planted in 1958, the five acre vineyard is traditionally dry grown and comes from an original Barossa clonal source. South facing, on the eastern side of a ridge separating the Seppeltsfield and Marananga appellations, these aged vines have been meticulously hand tended, traditionally farmed and pruned by a grower with a lifetime’s experience on Western Barossa soils of very dark, heavy clay loam over red friable clay. The resulting low yields of small, concentrated Shiraz berries make the vineyard the envy of all winemakers in the Barossa.
We looked longingly at the wine when it was returned to the Seppelts, knowing that it was the best we had ever made. In 2005 we convinced the Seppelts to sell Torbreck the fruit and The Laird was born. In 2013 Torbreck purchased the Gnadenfrei vineyard, securing The Laird’s reputation as one of the world’s great single vineyard Shiraz wines.
Torbreck is the name of a forest near Inverness, Scotland and you’ll find more than a passing nod to the Celts in our wine naming conventions. The Laird of the Estate in Scotland is the Lord of the Manor and master of all he surveys.
Review:
I poured the 2017 The Laird, set it aside and got about doing other jobs for 45 minutes or so, to give it some room to breathe. And it does breathe. It has its own pulse and beat and life, and it flexes and moves in the mouth. This is incredibly enveloping, with aromas reminiscent of campfire coals, charred eucalyptus, lamb fat, roasted beetroot, black tea and a prowling sort of countenance. In the mouth, the wine is bonded and cohesive and seamless, there are no gaps between anything, no space between fruit, oak and tannin; it all comes as one. While this is a singular wine, it is so big and concentrated that it needs no accompaniment other than some fresh air and a good mate. It's denser than osmium and is impenetrable at this stage.
Denner Vineyards Ditch Digger 2021 is made from 33% Grenache, 32% Mourvèdre, 22% Syrah, and the balance Cinsaut, Counoise, Tannat and Carignan.
Ditch Digger is Denner Vineyards' flagship — a Rhône-style blend grown on the limestone hillsides of Paso Robles' Willow Creek District. Named for Ron Denner's roots in the earthmoving business, it's a bold, layered wine of dark fruit, spice, and mineral drive.
Review:
The 2021 Ditch Digger is a blend of 33% Grenache, 32% Mourvèdre, 22% Syrah, 5% Cinsaut, 4% Counoise, 2% Tannat and 2% Carignan. It has kaleidoscopic aromas of wild berries, dried mint, mushrooms, forest floor and hints of floral perfume. The medium-bodied palate is notable for the concentration, definition and layering of its spicy fruit. It has a structure of chalky tannins, fireworks of fresh acidity and a long, dynamic finish.

This flagship wine is designed to show the best qualities of the Denner estate. It evokes a Chateauneuf vibe, blended from 33% grenache, 32% mourvedre, 22% syrah, 5% cinsault, 4% counoise, 2% tannat and 2% carignan. Nicely layered red and black fruit with meaty, peppery accents. Full-bodied and moderately tannic, showcasing the vineyard rather than any new oak influence. Drink or hold.
