Winery: Pearmund Cellars

The Pearmund Cellars Estate
Pearmund Cellars was founded in 1976 and purchased by Chris in 1993 (with his first vintage in 2002), the estate has had active agriculture since the mid-1700s.. It is located in the foothills of eastern Fauquier County, VA.  The winery spreads over 7500-square-foot and they farm 25 acres of vines: Chardonnay, Viognier, Riesling, Late Harvest Vidal, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Ameritage.
At the estate the oldest Chardonnay vines in Virginia are planted, while the rest of the grapes are sourced from various parts of the Commonwealth.  The vineyard is managed with as little intrusion as possible, and the estate operates in a largely holistic, earth-conscious manner.  They produce about 7,000 cases annually with an almost equal split between red and white.

They produce 7,000 cases
Pearmund Cellars was voted Virginia's Favorite Winery in 2007.

Damilano Barolo Brunate 2016

Damilano Barolo Brunate is made from 100 percent Nebbiolo 100%

When the wine ages, it takes on notes of tobacco, rose, liquorish, and – in the best vintages – even truffle. Its finesse and elegance are due to alkalinity and calcium content in the soil.

This Barolo in youth presents scents of violet and small red fruit, balsamic tastes, and pleasant spice notes of clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

The original name of this vineyard was Brinate.

COLOUR:garnet red with orange reflections
BOUQUETi: ntense with notes of violet, balsamic and small red berries
TASTE:intense, elegant and persistent, with nuances of red fruit, tobacco, liquorice and with ageing truffles and cinnamon

Reviews:

So beautifully perfumed with blueberries, raspberries, violets and flowers. Full-bodied, transparent and so clear with intense, chewy tannins and a seamless finish. Tight and powerful. Needs two or three years to soften.

James Suckling 95 Points

This wine takes us to Brunate, one of the most celebrated vineyards in the appellation and one of five prized sites farmed by the Damilano family. The 2016 Barolo Brunate definitely shows its pedigree and is perhaps the most classic wine in this group of five, thanks to its intensity and its notable depth. When Brunate delivers, it delivers, and you get dark fruit, rusty nail, blood orange and lilac, all presented in an absolutely pure and pristine manner. The Brunate cru is composed of 25% sand, 45% silt and 30% clay, so you get a bit more structure here compared to the more ethereal Cannubi right over the next hill. Damilano has crafted a terrific wine in this edition of only 2,900 bottles (released in April 2020).

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 95

Aromas and flavors of eucalyptus, juniper, tar, black cherry and plum are the hallmarks of this beefy red, which is fresh and packs a firm grip on the finish, yet shows the promise of ripe fruit too. Needs time. Best from 2023 through 2042. 240 cases made, 50 cases imported.

Wine Spectator 94 Points

Pressed rose, ground clove, star anise and moist earth aromas mingle together in the glass. Elegantly structured and full of flavor, the juicy palate doles out raspberry compote, black cherry and tobacco set against refined tannins. Drink 2023–2031.

Spice, tea, and plum and blackberry aromas dance atop currants and boysenberry pie. The opulence continues with secondary notes of chocolate and black tea that lead to satisfying elegant finish revealing jasmine. The finish is mouthwatering and long with presenting umami, soy, and Asian spice. Planted to the same special cuttings as our block at the Toyon Farm in Carneros, they are a joy tasting side by side, illustrating the profound influence of terroir.

Pair with Asian, pork with hoisin sauce, savory foods.

Review:

"Sourced from a vineyard of imported Burgundian cuttings planted back in 1982, this is a complex Pinot Noir, offering concentrated aromas of blueberry, palo santo and warm vanilla on the nose. The palate is joyous in cherry and baking-spice flavors, then picks up an herbaceous eucalyptus leaf kick before dropping into a spicy, Sichuan peppercorn-laced finish. - M.K."

Pearmund Cellars Cameo Collection Rose NV

Pearmund Cellars Cameo Collection Rose is made from mostly Chambourcin with the balance being Merlot and Petit Manseng.

In 2019, Chris Pearmund worked with sixteen Virginia wineries to create a blended wine with grapes from each participating vineyard to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of Winemaking in Virginia. A portion of the wine’s proceeds were donated to museums and events that would contribute to tourism in the Commonwealth and foster a broader understanding of Virginia’s cultures and cuisines. This idea sparked another movement to celebrate through wine, and Cameo seemed a perfect way to commemorate the milestone moment in history.

Cameo Wine Collection was created to highlight women in Virginia, and the memorable events that have unfolded in the Commonwealth that lead to the movement to secure women’s right to vote. Raise a glass and toast the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment. Cameo Rosé honors 12 of Virginia’s most influential women. Each bottle has a label depicting one of the chosen women, who’s contributions range from historic, business, entertainment, politics, and wine. The story of the suffrage movement in Virginia is an important part of the collective history. A variety of cultures and eras have been curated to share recollections of the fearless, passionate ways each woman lived so that a case of wine will contain twelve different individuals to celebrate. Women like Martha Washington, Pearl Bailey, and Ella Fitzgerald.

Cameo Rosé offers aromas of raspberry, strawberry, and peach. Dry on the palate, silky tannins and minerality are balanced by strawberry and orange zest flavors.
