Wine from Bierzo

Bierzo is a two-part wine producing region in Spain. Bierzo Alto
translates to high Bierzo, which reflects that mountains of the region. Wine
here is grown within the slopes. Bierzo Bajo means low Bierzo for the vast
plain of the area.
A rich history dates back to Romans who successfully mined
the earth in Bierzo for gold. The climate in Bierzo is largely due to the
nearby Atlantic Ocean. It is cooler in Bierzo than in Castilla y Leon, but
overall maintains an average temperature for the area. Local grapes produced in
Bierzo are Mencia and Garnacha, but also Dona Blanca, Godello, and Palomino.
Crianza wines from the region must be aged for two years, with six months in
oak barrels and Reserva wines must have twenty four months in bottle and 12
months in Oak barrells. The soil in Bierzo contains slate and granite,
which allows the vines grown here to produce mineral characters in the wine.
Bierzo also produces wine that has lower alcohol than other nearby regions.

Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Malbec.
The 2022 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon shows notes of plum, blackberry, licorice, chocolate, violet, and warm spice. Dark plum and black fruit carry through to the palate. Fresh and lively with plush tannins and a polished structure.

"A solid representation of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine sources fruit from St. Helena down to Carneros, with the bulk of the blend coming from the Wappo Hill property in Stags Leap. All five Bordeaux varieties are included in the blend. Fermentation begins with a cold soak in stainless steel, followed by 26 days on skins, and 18 months of ageing in 31% new French oak. The wine opens with powerful Kirsch aromatics, lifted by bright Bing cherry, warm baking spices, new wood cedar, and white pepper. It is plush and layered on the palate, with black-toned fruit and robust, lingering tannins that carry through a long finish of dark red and black fruit, warming spices, and mineral tension. A very good introduction to Napa Valley cabernet for drinkers who are unfamiliar. This offers ripe, generous red and black fruit on a velvety texture of fine-grained tannins. Black cherries, dark plums and blackberries come up in the aroma and then go deeper on the palate. Contains 7% petit verdot, 8% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 1% malbec. Aged in all French barrels, 31% new, which add accents of cinnamon and cedar. Drink now or hold.

Elvio Cogno Cascina Nuova Barolo is made from 100 percent Nebbiolo.
Born to satisfy the curiosity of consumers keen to have a more immediate understanding of Barolo, the wine is bright garnet red in color with orange tints. Pleasing and immediate, it offers scents of flowers and light, delicate spices. The mouth is agreeably rounded, juicy and fresh, with just the right balance between pleasantness and elegance. The aftertaste is very harmonious with a mineral, aromatic finish.
Review:
This Barolo shows lavender, dried cranberries, licorice and a touch of tile on the nose. The palate is medium- to full-bodied and balanced, with lovely, succulent fruit complemented by incisive acidity. The tannins are fine grained yet chewy, but they gradually resolve toward the bright finish. Better from 2026.
