Wine from Rueda

Rueda is a Spanish wine region that is located in Castile and León. The region is made up of 72 municipalities and is known for fine white wines that are produced from the verdejo grape. Centered around the town of Rueda, and in the province of Valladolid, it is situated on a high flat plain between 1968 and 2559 feet above sea level. The Duero River flows through the region from east to west.
Wine production in Rueda dates back to the 11th century. King Alfonso VI offered titles to settlers as the area was recently reconquered. Many people accepted and founded monasteries with vineyards. Back in the 18th century the region was devoted exclusively to the Verdego grape. Between 1890 and 1922, phylloxera destroyed almost half of the vines, but was replanted in the late 1920’s.
Rueda has a continental climate with long and hot summers, and cold winters. The region is also influenced by Atlantic maritime. Temperatures can vary and sometimes drop to 32° during the winter. It is not unusual to see the mercury rise to 86° during the summer. The average rainfall is 15.7” per year with 2,700 hours of sunlight.
Soils in Rueda are alluvial with high lime content near the Duero River. To the south, the topsoil is sandy and brown with clan and gravel subsoil.

"The 2020 Capitel is pure Verdejo from the oldest vines from the Peña Aguda vineyard in the village of Nieva on slate soils. This is the last vineyard to be bottled and has higher alcohol (14%) than the rest of the vineyards despite now harvesting earlier. The wine has a different aromatic profile but getting closer to the style of Ossian, less opulent than in the past, with more energy, quite fruit-driven with some exotic notes reminiscent of banana skin. The whole clusters were pressed and the juice put to ferment in barrel where the wine matured with the lees and, starting this year, without bâtonnage, because they feel the wines have enough volume and stirring the lees can bring more oxidation to the wine. 2,500 bottles produced. - Luis GUTIERREZ"

This is very old-vine Verdejo – some approaching 200 years – from Nieva, a cool region south of Valladolid in the province of Segovia. Here, the signature sandy soils take centre stage, resulting in a precise and chiselled white wine that shows off the freshness of the area. Typical varietal bitterness (hemp and grapefruit pith) combines with subtle oak to create a mouthwatering and textured white that will certainly develop further over the coming years. Organic.

Ossian Quintaluna Verdejo is made from 100% Verdejo
Quintaluna is a young wine that is made exclusively from Verdejo in the province of Segovia. 60% is very old grape: pre-phylloxera (ungrafted). 40% is made of very young grapes on trellises, grown certified organic, with low yields. The key to success for the Verdejo grape is held in the soil. Ideal soil has a high content of sand and pebbles of different sizes. Some have higher proportions of clay and others have significant proportions of clay and limestone. As the pebbles and sand allow for good drainage, the clay holds enough moisture to allow the vines to thrive.
The color is a straw yellow with greenish reflections. On the nose, you will find aromas of white flowers, stone fruit (peach), and citrus (lemon, mandarin). It also displays tropical fruit aromas. The palate is complex. Natural acidity is evident in the freshness and length on the palate. Almond and ripe fruit flavors are found in the mid-palate with fresh grass and citrus on the finish.
It pairs wells with all kinds of appetizers, entrees and salads.

They still use grapes from external suppliers but are working toward using 100% their own grapes (which they might achieve in 2023); therefore, the wine is not certified organic, because some of the vineyards from the growers are not certified. It has a balsamic nose reminiscent of bay leaf, dried yellow flowers, chamomile and pollen intermixed with pit fruit. The 2021 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is deep ruby in the glass with purple hues. The rich bouquet of spiced black plum and cocoa nib are balanced with aromas of fresh earth and crushed flint. Coming out strong out of the gate, the 2021 ‘Columbia Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon is nearly all varietal. Dark chocolate shavings, baking spices and anise come together on the nose. The palate is beautifully balanced with a seamless texture and great sense of weight, with heady roasted date and black currant flavors. Generous and rich, this is a gorgeous showing from 2021. This is a serious value to purchase by the case.

The 2019 Paramour entices with notes of blueberry, iris, leather, chocolate cake, and cigar on the nose. A rich attack of layers of flavor include cherry, plum, coffee, and chocolate with bright acidity. Soft and silky tannins lead to a long finish, with cherry, blueberry, plum, and currant lingering on the palate.

A blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Merlot, the 2019 Paramour Proprietary Red was sourced from the Schifflet, Hudson and Stagecoach Vineyards. Blessed with floral notes, licorice and black cherries on the nose, this looks like the pick of the litter and is one reason why Napa Cabernet Franc prices are what they are. This is full-bodied and rich yet seemingly weightless, despite being concentrated, long and velvety. This is just lovely stuff.
