Tempranillo is native to Spain and is used to create red wines that are typically blended with Grenache and Carinena varieties. The black grape comes from the Spanish word, temprano, meaning early, which refers to the fact that the variety ripens earlier than most red grapes in Spain. Tempranillo was grown in the 20th century to create jug wines in California and has been planted in the United States, South Africa, Turkey, Canada, Australia, and Argentine. Tempranillo grows well at high altitudes and produces deep, ruby colored wines that are aromatic with berry, tobacco, vanilla, plum, herbal, and leather notes. The grape variety was thought to be directly related to Pinot Noir and it was thought that Cistercian monks left cuttings of Pinot Noir at monasteries as they made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. However, there is no proof that the variety is related to Pinot Noir. Tempranillo grapes need to be grown in cool regions to produce a less acidic wine, however, to create sweet wines that are high in sugar, heat is required. The wine pairs well with steak, a bacon burger, crab, barbecue meats, and pizza with red peppers. Tempranillo also pairs well with veal parmigiana or haddock.

Deep cherry red in color with a garnet rim. On the nose, it is intense and elegant, with a base of ripe fruits that blends with the subtle tertiary aromas of sweet spices and cocoa. On the palate, it is balanced, full-bodied but with sweet and pleasant tannins, with a long and very persistent aftertaste.
Review:
This dark-violet-red-colored wine gives off aromas of raspberry, orange zest and cocoa powder. Brilliant acidity washes across and then remains on the palate, joined by plush tannins and flavors of black cherry, pomegranate, milk chocolate, fennel pollen and lavender. Drink through 2047.

"Shimmering garnet. Aromas of cherry, blueberry, candied flowers, tobacco and coconut pick up a smoky overtone with air. Smooth and fleshy on the palate, offering ripe red and blue fruit, mocha, cola and spicecake qualities that tighten up on the back half. Finishes long and supple with repeating spiciness, even tannins and a lingering suggestion of red berry preserves. Burgo Viejo Reserva Wine vinification has occurred blending different grape varieties to produce an aged wine that will surely keep maturity and fullness from the vineyard until the very moment of uncorking.
VINIFICATION: Alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vats at controlled temperature; aged in American and French oak barrels -50% each- for 18 months.
