Wines Of Substance Vineyard Collection Powerline Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

The original thought was to be a one wine brand, with a single minded vision to produce the best value-priced Cabernet Sauvignon in America. How do you go about this? Traditional winemaking. Natural fermentations. Barrel-aging. Plus, bottling unfiltered and unfined. In essence, making the wines in small batch winemaking integrity, but doing so on a larger scale. The wine is black. The label definitively says, "This is Cabernet Sauvignon." With the CS, you know who made this wine: Charles Smith. There is also the single vineyard, single expression, Bordeaux varietals (ex: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) produced in very limited quantities. Let's not to forget, the single vineyard Loire-style Substance Sauvignon Blanc. This is the newest chapter in the history books of Charles Smith and his wines.

Review:

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Powerline Vineyard (which is all from Clone 2) is a brilliant, brilliant wine that’s loaded with ripe red, black, and blue fruit as well as notions of green herbs, tobacco, chocolate, and even hints of spiced meat. Complex and medium to full-bodied, with good acidity and a balanced, seamless mouthfeel, it’s already hard to resist yet is going to cruise of 15+ years in cold cellars. -Jeb Dunnuck 95 Points

Gamba Zinfandel Family Ranches 2014

Sourced from several sites in the heart of the Russian River Valley, the grapes are vinified in our traditional style; with an extended soaking period. The vineyard lots were fermented on the natural indigenous yeasts, each lot fermented separately to highlight the distinctive characteristics and unique distinct flavor profiles of this world famous growing region. Dark ruby-garnet in color, this classic Russian River Zinfandel shows aromas of boysenberry, raspberry, brown spices, and pepper. Medium to full-bodied, the Family Ranches Zinfandel is balanced with excellent acidity: a powerful, rich and concentrated wine, with flavors of nectarine, cherry and raspberry that build through the lingering finish. This lovely wine can be enjoyed now, and will continue to develop with bottle age over the next several years.

Trione Zinfandel Flatridge Ranch - 2017

Trione Zinfandel Flatridge Ranch is made from 100 percent Zinfandel.

Aromas of briarwood and pipe tobacco give way to blackberry pie, toasted macaroons and plums.  The wine is velvety, supple and rich with a long, satisfying finish.  This Zinfandel, a Sonoma County classic, will continue to age for many years to come.

Flatridge Ranch is a secluded parcel in the Coastal mountain range, west of the Rockpile AVA.  Here the Trione family planted a 10 acre vineyard in 2008.  The vines are a unique Zinfandel selection called Saint Peter’s Church, whose provenance is a 100-year-old block in Cloverdale, a small town north of our Geyserville winery.   The 2013 vintage was a perfect growing season.

Cases produced:  575

Winemaking:  We fermented the grapes in small, open top fermenters, hand plunging the cap three-four times daily.  The wine aged 18 months in American oak barrels, 40% new.

Inglenook Rubicon 2016

Inglenook Rubicon  is made from 93% Cabernet Sauvignon 7% Cabernet Franc.

Since its inaugural vintage in 1978, Rubicon has been the Estate's premier red wine, reflecting the soul of the property and expressing Francis Coppola's wish to create a Bordeaux-styled grand wine, that is, "a wine that can please contemporary taste, but with a historical aspect [that defines] our vineyards at their zenith."

Rubicon was named after the small river crossed by Julius Caesar in 49 B.C., declaring his intention to gain control of Rome, thereby launching a civil war among opposing factions. Over time the phrase "crossing the Rubicon" has come to signify any irreversible action with revolutionary intent or the outcome of which holds great risk. True to its uncommon depth, Inglenook's Rubicon continues to be a testament to the finely tuned rendering of a risk well-taken.

2016:

After four years of drought, a winter with average rainfall was welcome, as it provided ample soil moisture for a strong start to the 2016 growing season. Average late-spring temperatures and limited precipitation minimized the risk of frost during mid-May bloom, ensuring average yields. June closed with a heat spell, slowing vine canopy growth at the ideal time. Harvest of the blocks contributing to the 2016 Inglenook Rubicon blend occurred under optimum conditions from September 6th through September 27th.

Ideal harvest conditions endowed the 2016 Rubicon with the three elements associated with a truly great wine from the Rutherford appellation: complexity, balance, and elegance. The aromas are intense and focused with top notes of creamy, sweet vanilla, and black licorice wound around a core of exquisitely ripe black cherry and crème de cassis. This refinement extends directly to the palate, where the wine is both broad and deep with sensuous, silky tannins. Supremely balanced in terms of both opulence and complexity, ripe black fruits and an ultra-smooth texture provide an impressive crescendo to a very long finish.

Review:

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon is a wine of total precision and class. Translucent and energetic, with distinctly mid-weight structure, the 2016 is a wine of reserve, tension and breeding. Shy at first, the 2016 has a lot to offer, but it needs a number of years in bottle to be at its most expressive. Cedar, tobacco, licorice and wild cherry add the closing nuances.

Product Description

SALE!

The Sciandri family, they are wonderful people. Mr. Sciandri was a firefighter. When he retired from the fire department, he planted some vines in the Coombsville AVA, near the Caldwell vineyard, with plans of selling the fruit to some esteemed wineries. The Sciandri family asked Hank if he would consider purchasing fruit and making a Cabernet from their vineyard. Hank wanted to support the family, and he also knew the vineyard was in a prime location (plus he has complete belief in his winemaker). Hank took 5 tons of Cabernet fruit from the Sciandri family in 2017. He made just 200 cases. This wine is entering the market with rave reviews from Hank’s largest critics. He wishes he could’ve made twice as much!

The Vineyard:

Our Cabernet Grapes came from The Sciandri Vineyard in the Coombsville area just east of the city of Napa. The 4 acre vineyard, planted with clone 337 has a western exposure that stays cool thru influences of the San Pablo Bay.  This allows for long hang time that usually harvests at the end of October. The soil is well drained rocky hillside, primarily Hambright-Rock outcrop complex and Coombs gravelly loam.

The Grapes:
The grapes came in small-berried, deep black-blue and loose on the clusters. Following a five day cold soak, the fermentation took seven days followed by a 14-day extended maceration. After which the wine was pressed and transferred to small French Oak barrels for aging. The wine was bottled in summer 2019 after twenty months of maturation in 80% new French oak barrels.

Aromas of dark plum, cassis and anise meld seamlessly with savory dried herbs.  The mouth transforms into raspberry sweetness and a mineral note. This palate coating wine has a great toasted oak long finish. Wonderful now, this wine will however benefit from further bottle ageing reaching its peak in 3 to 6 years but drinkable for 10 years.  Only 200 cases produced.

Review:

From a vineyard situated in Lake County that dates back to the 1880’s. Ruby red in color. 14.5% ABV. Pretty nose of red fruits, flowers and baking spices. Medium body with bright acidity. Fresh and elegant. Bing cherry, raspberry, strawberry and a touch of peach on the palate. The finish is exquisite. Drink over the next 2-4 years. $35 at the winery and retail.  Zinfandel Chronicles  93 points.

“Lively and sleek, with floral raspberry, bay leaf and pepper flavors that glide toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2025.—T.F.  Wine Spectator, Insider Vol 14 No. 47 : March 31st, 2019 – 92pts

My Favorite Neighbor Blanc 2021

A deep and rich hue of golden straw gives the first clue that this is a serious Chardonnay. Aromas of pear, green apple, and lime peel jump out of the glass followed by more nuanced fragrances of orange blossom, ginger root, and brioche. The sensation on the palate casually demonstrates both broad depth and laser like focus. An assertive core of acid and saline minerality rests completely ensconced in rich flavors of pie crust, clotted cream, and burnt caramel. Drink now for fresh vibrance, or in ten years for wild complexity. This wine is a perfect white to be enjoyed year-round.

Review:

The 2021 MFN Blanc Chardonnay is very ripe in style with scents of banana chip, apple pie, jasmine, allspice and brown sugar. The full-bodied palate is packed with ripe, spicy fruits and plenty of refreshing acidity, and it finishes long with a satiny, mouth-coating texture. It's an old-school style reminiscent of Napa that fans of ripe, oaked Chardonnays will enjoy.

Klinker Brick Winery Zinfandel Old Ghost 2018

Klinker Brick Winery Zinfandel Old Ghost made from 100 percent Zinfandel.

The Old Ghost represents the best Zinfandel that Klinker Brick produces each year. Brambleberry fruit aromas intermingled with anise, clove and exotic spice, echo previous vintages. Smaller berries harvested from this vineyard block tend to offer more “skin to flesh,” providing a greater level of smooth yet firm tannin and structure to this wine. Pair with your prime porterhouse or grilled lamb.

Kinsella Estates Spencer Zinfandel is made from 100 percent Zinfandel.

complex amalgamation of tart blueberries, baked plums, warm earth, fresh black cherries, anise, pie crust, brown sugar and a slight note of sweet confectionary candy. Roland Champion Champagne Le Cul du Singe Brut Nature 2016

Roland Champion Champagne Le Cul du Singe Brut Nature is made from 100% Pinot Meunier.

The special Story about the name "Cul du Singe" (literally "Monkey's butt"):

"In the 70's, my Grandfather Roland and my Father François wanted to buy new lands to plant vines, but nothing was available at that time in Chouilly. They found some parcels in the Marne Valley, in the village of Verneuil. "Le cul du singe" was one of them.

One day, while my father and grandfather were both working in the plot to clean it up, an old man from the village came and watched them. Roland and François asked him why this parcel had this name. The old man remained silent for a long time, turned his beret on his head several times and said to them: Have you ever seen anything grow on a monkey’s ass? and he left without saying more.
For him, Roland and François were two strangers completely mad who wanted to grow a vineyard on this wild land!" - Carole CHAMPION

The Champagne Cul du Singe shows a brilliant gold color with coppery reflections - a hallmark of black grape varieties. In the glass, a fine effervescence nourishes a delicate and persistent foam cord. A fruity and jovial nose displays floral aromas and delicate red fruits. The palate is luscious, tonic and juicy with an energetic sap. A finish with bitter notes and grapefruit peel.
