From the cool, wind-swept McMinnville AVA in Oregon's Willamette Valley, La Biblioteca's Estate Reserve Pinot Noir is a site-driven wine of red-fruited lift, savory spice, and fine tannin — grown on marine-sediment and volcanic soils.
Review:
Fresh and fruit-driven, the Estate Reserve is comprised of a mixture of clones from the Aegrina estate in the cool, west-facing hills of the McMinnville AVA. One winemaker, Rob Brittan, began this wine and finished by Burgundian Francois Millet. It shows generous red fruits, fresh cranberries, raspberries and a touch of piquant blood orange. The palate flashes savoury herbs, tart red fruits and sour Montmorency cherries carrying the finish.

A dusting of sweet spice and crushed violet candies gives way to ripe blackberries as the exuberant 2022 Pinot Noir Estate Reserve emerges from the glass. Medium red-colored, the 2022 Pinot Noir Estate Reserve is lifted with spicy notes of clove, sour cherries, pink peppercorn, and orange peel. Medium-bodied and inviting, with a delicate, floral and fresh feel on the palate, it has fine tannins and even acidity. Drink this over the next 4-5 years. 615 cases were produced.

Lismore Pinot Noir is made from 100 percent Pinot Noir
Complex bouquet of crushed rose petals, wild jasmine and fresh French herbs followed by a palate full of cranberry, raspberry and a long savory finish.
The grapes were picked at optimal ripeness. 30% whole bunch fermented in large 5000 liter vats with gentle pump-overs twice a day. The process allowed for a long extraction period which lends to the fruit expression and structure of this wine. The free run wine was drained off and the fermented grapes were then pressed in a traditional wooden basket press. The wine was racked into 225, 300 and 500 liter barrels where malolactic fermentation took place and the wine was aged for 10 months. 35% new French oak was used.
Review:
The 2018 Pinot Noir comes from Walker Bay and Kaaimansgat and includes 30% whole-bunch fruit, aged for 11 months in 25% new oak. The bouquet sports vivid red cherry and raspberry fruit that is exceptionally well defined and beautifully integrated with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, well-judged acidity and a slightly fleshy texture. There is just the right amount of salinity here, and the finish is kept on a tight leash, allowing the detail and precision to be fully expressed. A slight sour edge on the finish keeps you coming back for another sip. Excellent and reassuringly classy. - Neal Martin

Walker Bay and Elandskloof are the twin sources of 30% whole bunch-fermented Pinot from Sam O'Keefe. Juicy, floral and charming, it's a graceful, fruit forward style with some clove and tobacco spice and refreshing acidity. The finish is a little firmer than I remember. 2020-24

This small, sustainably farmed vineyard perches on a south-facing ridge in the Sebastopol Hills area of the esteemed Russian River Valley AVA, and has produced exceptional Pinot Noir for Bydand since their first vintage. Third-generation farmer David Umino rejected early assessments that the site was too cool for viticulture, and planted Pinot Noir there in 1996. The cold maritime winds in fact help to modulate ripening, and protect the grape’s natural purity and balance - resulting in fruit-driven wines with expressive red fruit and dark berry flavors, balanced with crushed rock and mouth-watering freshness. Velvety tannins coat the palate, providing an alluring and persistent finish.

The wine opens with sleekness and elegance while finishing with persistent, polished tannin. Cold soaking and fermenting in small, 1.5-ton fermenters enhances silky texture, while 20% whole cluster inclusion increases freshness, complexity, and length.

The backbone of Argyle’s decades of consistent high quality has been squarely built by vineyards that we have farmed for decades in the Dundee Hills and Eola-Amity Hills AVAs. Nate and the winemaking team work in extremely small lots to preserve the nuance and complexity of Argyle’s estate fruit. Nate’s focus on innovation includes doing more skin soaking to tease out the character and spice of Argyle’s Rieslings, and experimenting with small amounts of whole clusters to accentuate the depth and nuance of the winery’s Pinot Noirs. Additional areas of experimentation include harvesting at various ripeness levels to enhance the cool-climate energy and layered complexity of the wines, as well as fine-tuning the dosage program to create evermore dynamic and terroir-driven sparkling wines.
Perhaps the greatest area of innovation and experimentation at Argyle can be found in the winery’s renowned Extended Tirage program, which has set the standard for New World sparkling wine, earning the highest scores for any sparkling wines made outside of Champagne.

Pahlmeyer Jayson Red Napa Valley is made from 51% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Malbec, 7% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc.
Voluptuousness meets vibrance in this classic Bordeaux-inspired blend. Ripe Merlot-dominant aromas of juicy macerated raspberry unfurl with hints of pencil lead, clove, cedar, and fresh sage. The compact fruit core, flanked by fine, polished tannin, surges open on a full, silky palate, giving way to complex underpinnings of earth and spice. A beam of bright acidity keeps the fruit fresh and focused through a soft, lingering finish of dusty plum and cocoa.
It’s best to serve this rich, layered wine at a temperature between 60°F and 65°F. Open and opulent in its youth, this wine is ready to match with a range of flavorful summer dishes such as Carolina-style pulled pork, bánh mì sandwiches, or bacon cheddar burgers.
Review:
This is a very polished wine in 2022, well-built with neatly knit tannins that form a solid foundation for the dark currant and blackberry fruit that floods the mid-palate. Good depth of concentration and driving energy create a sense of tension and vibrancy. Indeed not a shy wine, yet more approachable, with tannins almost melting away on the finish—very characteristic of the warm vintage. Grape sources include William Hill and Broken Rock in Napa, Stagecoach, Waters, and Round Pond in Rutherford, along with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from the iconic Monte Rosso Vineyard in Sonoma. Grapes are sorted by hand, fermented in stainless steel with a small percentage in oak tanks, and then aged for 15 months in 80% new French oak. (JC)

Founded in 1902, Argentina’s Bodega Catena Zapata pioneered the revival of Malbec and the discovery of extreme high-altitude terroir in the Andean foothills of Mendoza. Its crown jewel is the Adrianna Vineyard — planted at nearly 5,000 feet in the Uco Valley and often called the Grand Cru of South America.
The River parcel sits in the path of a dried-out riverbed, its stony soil coaxing out an especially aromatic, rich and luxurious Malbec — floral and exuberant, with smooth tannins and a long, lingering finish. Lovely young, but built to age for decades.
Review:
Probably the most austere among the three Adrianna Vineyard malbecs. Arresting nose already, with a touch of white pepper to the deep black and blue fruit. Huge depth and profoundness, but at the same time it is so fresh. The difference is more obvious on the palate if you compare this with the Mundus Bacillus Terrae and Fortuna Terrae bottlings. This shows the claws of the mineral tannins, which are a little less fleshy than Mundus, but with more tension. Seamless, taut and long. Drink from 2026.
