Winery: Buccella

At Buccella, we’re especially interested in origins. Our own story began over a beautiful bottle of 1990 Gaja. It was our first date. When we met, we were two individuals with distinct dreams, but we soon found our shared passion for wine would unite our paths to create Buccella.

We savor wine for its ability to bring people together, initiate new relationships, and celebrate life’s most momentous occasions. A well-crafted wine not only creates memories, it nourishes the true enjoyment of life. For these reasons, we have pursued our shared dream of making the best wine we can.

Our dream has not been without obstacles. But they have inspired us to work tirelessly, handcrafting wines that reflect our shared commitment to creating memories and enhancing life’s celebrations. It is a privilege to create wine that is an important ingredient in shaping your stories, your enjoyment of life. We hope that every bottle of Buccella helps build a memory for you and those with whom you share it.

From our dream to your table, your enjoyment is our passion.

Buccella Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2017

Buccella Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is made from 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec and 3% Merlot.

Our Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted from diverse, premium fruits thoughtfully cultivated by a variety of small vineyards spanning the Napa Valley. Low yields and great clonal pedigree, combined with meticulous farming within a variety of different appellations, are essential to producing our Cabernet Sauvignon. We believe it’s this blend of intensely ripe fruit that results in our wine’s unique character, complexity, depth and balance.

A fragrant nose introduces our classic, rich and balanced Cabernet Sauvignon which is filled with bright red fruits, black cherry and sweet violet aromas. The palate bursts with flavors of ripe blackberry, juicy raspberry and lovely notes of mocha that are surrounded by nuances of sweet cigar box and crushed stone minerality. Deep color and finely grained tannins that lend pleasing structure, round out this wine. Our use of several vineyards from different appellations enhances the layered complexity that makes this fruit-focused wine so exceptional. Utilizing blending varietals such as Malbec and Merlot impart exquisite dark fruit and a plush mid-palate only further adding to the multi-layers. Enjoy

Review:

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is similarly deep purple/ruby-hued and has slightly more red fruits with lots of black raspberry, cassis, toasted spice, unsmoked tobacco, and incense aromas and flavors. It almost has a Margaux-like perfume and is medium to full-bodied, seamless, and wonderfully balanced on the palate. Some chalky minerality comes through with time in the glass, and it has plenty of tannins and a great finish. It’s not an over-the-top blockbuster and impresses just as much for its elegance as its richness.  -Jeb Dunnuck 96 Points

Passing Time Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven 2018

Passing Time Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven is made from 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc,

The Horse Heaven Hills produces some of the most uniquely complex Cabernet Sauvignons in Washington State. Using fruit from two top Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards - Champoux and Discovery - balanced with just the right amount of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this wine expresses all the concentration, finesse, and Cabernet Sauvignon essence that define this appellation.

This wine has come to embody the style and purpose of Passing Time, featuring classic Cabernet notes of crème de cassis, blackberry, bittersweet chocolate, crushed herbs and graphite. Texture has always been a hallmark of the Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet, and the 2018 vintage shows this beautifully. While approachable in its youth, this wine will reward some patience in the cellar, and age for many years to come.

Review:

"Lots of black plum, smoked earth, chocolate, and tobacco notes emerge from the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills. It’s another 2018 that has terrific purity and freshness as well as plenty of mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, and a great finish."

Passing Time Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain 2018

Passing Time Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc.

Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon reflects the essence of this famous appellation. It is broad-shouldered and deeply fruited, with classic Red Mountain structure promising a long life in the cellar.

Red Mountain Cabernet is renowned for its firm structure, ageability, and distinctive fruit profile. The 2018 Red Mountain Cabernet accentuates this character using older vines from two iconic vineyards, dating 25-35 years old. The result is a wine of profound depth and complexity featuring dark cherry and currant fruit, as well as crushed herbs and a hint of minerality. Red Mountain wines are known for their ability to cellar for years, and the 2018 vintage should ensure that this wine will be enjoyable for decades to come.

Review:

"Even better, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain is a more concentrated, powerful wine loaded with notions of chocolaty dark fruits, Asian spice, and classic Red Mountain rocky, savory minerality. It’s a big wine, yet it’s perfectly balanced, has stunning purity of fruit, and a great finish. I end my note on this wine with “Love it!”"

Passing Time Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla 2018

Passing Time Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Of all the Passing Time wines, the Walla Walla Cabernet has tended to feature Cabernet exclusively. In the classic 2018, this wine features a deep blue and black fruit character, with hints of blackberry leaf, baker’s chocolate, and crushed herbs. Featuring fruit from Seven Hills and Pepper Bridge vineyards—two locales with very different characters—this wine balances the power and structure of the Pepper Bridge site, with the beautiful elegance and bouquet of the Seven Hills vineyard. The resulting blend features the tell-tale balance of Passing Time’s style while also expressing the profound depth and balance of the incredible 2018 vintage.

Review:

All Cabernet Sauvignon and mostly from the Seven Hills Vineyard (there’s 38% from Pepper Bridge), the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley offers up a medium to full-bodied, fresh, nicely focused style that carries terrific cassis and black cherry fruits as well as lots of spice and violet notes. With good acidity and ripe, polished tannins, give bottles 3-4 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following two decades.

Sena Cabernet Blend 2018

Seña is an authentic Chilean blend made from the finest Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot varieties. The Carmenere variety adds an evident Chilean personality to the wine.

COMPOSITION: 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Malbec 15% Carmenere, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot WINEMAKER’S NOTES “Of a deep violet red colour, the complexity on the nose conceals its many subtleties, unfolding floral notes alongside red and black fruits, denoting its distinctive freshness. Several layers are unveiled delivering notes of cedar, tobacco, bitter chocolate and truffles. An elegant, tense and yet very attractive wine, it generously offers fresh and juicy fruit that reminds of blueberries, raspberries, some spices and Cuban cigar box notes. Above all, Seña 2018 is a truly captivating wine that accomplishes a unique balance between power and elegance. I believe we are beholding one of the greatest vintages ever crafted in the 25 years of Seña’s history.”

An iconic decision is made from the heart. Following the sign of his intuition, in 1995 Eduardo Chadwick pioneered a joint venture with Robert Mondavi to handcraft a world-class Chilean wine. Chadwick searched alongside Mondavi for four long years before finding the ideal terroir in Chile’s Valle de Aconcagua that spoke to their instincts. Seña is the culmination of their vision – an expression of consummate quality and character.

Review:

This is a very thoughtful Seña that shows unique aromas of warm earth, mushrooms and conifer, turning to dark berries and black olives. The palate is more glamorous with ultra-fine tannins that envelop your palate. Shows power and vibrancy at the end. Toned muscles. It’s a very intellectual wine that harkens back to the 2015. Blend of 55% cabernet sauvignon, 18% malbec, 15% carmenere, 7% cabernet franc and 5% merlot. - James Suckling  100 Points
