The Carmo Vinhos Estate
Carmo Vinhos wines are produced at Henriques & Henriques Vinhos S. A.that was founded in 1850 by Joao Joachim Henriques. Associated are: Belem’s Madeira Wine Lda. (founded in 1932), Casa dos Vinhos da Madeira Lda. (founded in 1932), Carmo Vinhos Lda.: Carmo Vinhos was established in 1928 to ship Madeira wine to Sweden. In 1944, the company started to diversify its markets and included other Scandinavian markets and eventually Austria, Germany, the U.S.A. as well as Japan . For many years Carmo Vinhos were the producers and bottlers of Madeira wines for Harveys of Bristol for the British market and also for Australia , New Zealand and Denmark .
Carmo's wines have long been appreciated by many connaisseurs all over the world as fine classical Madeira wines
Henriques & Henriques is now the largest producer of Madeira wines in the island. Today the company is run by John Cossart whose father Peter Cossart entered the firm in 1938.
The Carmo Vinhos Vineyard
Contrary to most other Madeira wine producing companies, Henriques y Henriques owns some vineyards. In the 1990's they even established a new vineyard of 10 hectares (24.7 acres) which is accessible to machines. Also they built a new adega in Quinta Grande so that the company can work with state of the art equipment. All the vinification and estufagem (oven process) is done here. The wines then mature down in the Belem lodge.
Madeira lies isolated in the Atlantic some 400 miles west of the Moroccan coast. Its volcanic soil and sub-tropical climate produce grapes with flavors that are particularly intense and individual. The varied and distinctive styles of Madeira wine owe much of their character to gentle heating by the unique “estufa” process.

Flanagan Syrah is made from 100 percent Syrah.
The Flanagan Syrah Bennett Valley opens with notes of white pepper, cherry blossom, and Bay Leaf. The palate has ripe black fruit, bacon fat, and Herbs de Provence with a surprising amount of tannin structure for New World Syrah. The wine is ripe and generous and retains great acids. The small berries produced from the steep, volcanic hillside site gives the wine great color and concentration. This is a wine that can stand proudly with top Syrah from around the world.
Aged in 100% French oak barrels from Allier Centre France cooperage with 15% new barrels.
Review:
"Impressive dark fruit in the blackberry zone and sweetly fragrant spices with hints of pepper and oak toast. The palate has a very supple and juicy edge with a suave, plush and smoothly delivered, black-cherry and blackberry core of flavor. Drink or hold."

Nuna Syrah Organic is made from 100 percent Syrah.
Chakana winery was founded in 2002 with a mission to produce wines of fantastic quality and value-for-money. Today, this wine is the fruit of long labor and steadfast adherence to this mission. Through sustainable agriculture our aim is to showcase in the most authentic way the characteristics of the vineyard, situated at 950 m above sea level with rich, stony soils and its own climate specific to the Mendoza river region. Nuna Syrah offers intense fruity aromas of blueberries and blackberries with coffee nuances. Well-balanced and persistent in the mouth, round with a soft texture.
The grapes are carefully chosen and fermented in small lots to preserve the vineyard identity. Alcoholic fermentation for 12 days with indigenous and selected yeasts, at temperatures of 26 and 30°C, combining, remontage, pigeage and delestage in order to obtain the best quality of tannins and structure.
Eden de Lapeyronie Cotes de Francs 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc.
Attractive nose of cherry and raspberry. On the palate, blackberry and cassis fruit flavors dominate, with hints of vanilla and firm tannins.
Drink with steak, hamburgers, grilled chicken, or soft cheeses.
Review:
"Largely Cabernet Sauvignon (there’s 40% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc), the 2015 Eden de Lapeyronie Cotes de Francs is an incredibly promising 2015 that has a medium-bodied, concentrated, slightly angular and tannic profile that’s going to benefit from another year or two in bottle. With outstanding notes of dark fruits, some rocky minerality, and subtle background oak, it’s well worth seeking out and should have over a decade or longevity."

Betz Family La Serenne Syrah is 100% Syrah
La Serenne is the most reflective of the site/vintage dynamic of our three single-site 2012 Syrahs. Lovers of this wine know that its source, the Boushey Vineyard, is the highest altitude of the three vineyards and is typically the latest harvested. This cool site was accentuated by the cooler season and the results reflect the seriousness of this vineyard and its care.
An extraordinary, nearly impenetrable black purple color leads to a concentrated, inky aromatic impression: smoky black cherry and wild blackberry dominate, but a litany of supporting aromas is already emerging: smoke, violet, mushroom, roasted meat, Chinese 5 spice and minerals. It has a full attack on entry and a big, rich mouthfeel that goes on and on.
2012 is our 13th harvest from this site and these rows. We continue to be impressed with the chameleon nature of this vineyard, in cool years and hot, in heat spikes and cool springs: it provides us with surprises and opportunities at every harvest. While the themes of deep black fruits and pliant structure always surface, the nuance of this vineyard and its care (thank you, Dick Boushey) make it some of the most satisfying fruit we work with every harvest.
Review:
"The pure, elegant and textured 2014 Syrah la Serenne offers that classic violet and floral characteristics of the cuvee, as well as medium to full-bodied richness, lots of black raspberry fruit, fine, sweet tannin and a great finish. It’s not as powerful or concentrated as the La Cote Rousse, yet it’s a joy to drink and will cruise for a decade or more on its balance and purity. - Jeb Dunnuck"

Flanagan Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The nose displays a pretty mix of violet, black fruits, orange blossom, and bergamot. On the palate the wine shows red and black current intermingled with mocha and earth notes. There is a ton of structure, and, at the same time, is very elegant. The texture feels “just right” with fine grained, supple, ripe tannins.
