Ferren Chardonnay Volpert Vineyard is 100 percent Chardonnay.
At the end of Taylor Lane outside of the coastal village of Occidental lies Volpert Vineyard. With the Pacific Ocean in sight, this vineyard resides at the far western edge of the West Sonoma Coast AVA. As such, this may be the source of our most high-toned and mineral laden wines. Owned by the Volpert family and farmed organically by Greg Adams, these five acres of heritage clone Pinot noir and Chardonnay are at the absolute cutting edge of Sonoma Coast viticulture.

The 2022 Chardonnay Volpert Vineyard brings together all the elements that make this such a great Chardonnay vintage at Ferren. Complex and dynamic in the glass, the Volpert dazzles with its depth, textural presence and overall complexity. Citrus confit, slate, apricot, passion fruit and mint are some of the notes that come to life with a bit of time in the glass. The 2022 is, quite simply, magnificent. That it was made from vines that were just a few years old at the time is even more remarkable. Don't miss it.

Bright medium yellow/green-hued, the 2021 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast has a gorgeous, fresh nose of bright flint, delicate oak spice, crystalline starfruit, fresh white flowers, and lime blossoms. Coming from a cooler and later ripening site, the 2022 Chardonnay Zephyr Farm Vineyard has such a sense of place with its coastal and vibrant feel. It has a savory touch that I love, with a fantastic freshness, and the palate is bright and focused, with a great, compact feel. And while it has the electricity I come to expect from this site, there’s just a touch more rounded opulence to even things out, so it isn’t austere, finishing with notes of delicate oak spice. Founded by winemaker Matt Courtney and his longtime friend David Wherritt, Ferren focuses on single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the far Sonoma Coast. They had initially set out to be a Pinot Noir house, but they now produce an equal amount of Chardonnay, and the wines don’t disappoint. The whites are textural, balanced, and highly expressive across the board.

The 2020 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast is a blend of declassified barrels from Ferren's single-vineyard program. It was matured in 20% new French oak for 12 months and six months in stainless steel. It takes time to unfold from youthful flint and crème brûlée aromas to deeper tones of baked quince, warm peaches and roasted almonds. The light-bodied palate pairs concentrated, creamy flavors and generous yet integrated oak spice with lively acidity, and it has a long, nutty finish. 272 cases were made.

A youthful red color, the 2022 Pinot Noir Volpert Vineyard is deep, long, and layered with ripe cherry fruit and fresh leather. It has the more savory feel that I find on the coast, with orange oils, sappy herbs, medicinal herbs, and dark berries. It also has a Chinato-like quality, with well-defined tannins and a chalky texture through its very long, citrus-noted finish. SILVER EAGLE VINEYARD
Silver Eagle Vineyard rests atop Stoetz Ridge, the land mass that divides the remote Sonoma Coast from the Russian River Valley. This vineyard experiences both the cooling ocean breezes of the nearby Pacific, as well as the warmth of the interior valley. The wine made from this unique confluence of climates is extraordinary: the Pinot noir a rare balance of explosive wild berry, mouth-watering acidity, and rich, polished tannins; the Chardonnay a fascinating juxtaposition of briny minerality and candied citrus.
Our brilliant vineyard manager Ulises Valdez owns this vineyard, and has built his home on this spectacular site.

Review:
This single-vineyard Lugana is from a plot of the estate's oldest vines with a high concentration of clay in the soil. It's vinified in 90% stainless steel and 10% concrete for a succulent and textural wine of balanced proportions. The citrussy, floral and herbal aromas are quite restrained, but in the mouth it bursts forth with papaya, lemon zest and pink grapefruit, ending with a saline, flinty flourish. Very refreshing.

Cavalier Dario Barolo Riserva 2016 is made from Nebbiolo.
This is the flagship of the Cavalier Dario house — a Barolo held back for the extended aging a Riserva demands and released only once it has begun to soften and open. In the glass it shows the deep garnet Nebbiolo takes on with time, with an aromatic profile the estate calls fresh, complex and austere, and a palate that is warm and supple with the balance that separates a serious Barolo from a merely powerful one. A wine for the table: braised beef, game, aged Piedmontese cheeses and slow Sunday cooking.
