Elio Filippino’s winery is located in the picturesque village of Neive - a UNESCO site, on the right bank of the Tanaro River and very close to Alba, the truffle capital. This location presents a magical landscape of steep hills, particularly suitable for fine and aromatic nuances in the wines. The main production of wine derives from two magnificent estates on the hills around Neive: Serra Capelli and San Cristoforo, regarded as one of the most beautiful hills of the entire Barbaresco grape-growing region, offering a breathtaking panorama that stretches from the Langhe to the province of Asti.
It was there, in the Frazione Serra Capelli, that Evaristo Filippino introduced his first vineyard in the early 1900’s, that was destined to evolve over time. During the 1950’s, his son, Domenico used his intuition and his father’s precious grapes to follow with his own production of delectable wines.
Today, after the untimely death in 1997 of his father Domenico, Elio Filippino is the third generation of winemaker of the estate, continuing his family’s tradition of superior winemaking while maintaining the greatest respect for the environment. Elio argues that “true quality comes from the vineyard, which does its best to produce excellent quality grapes.” Pruning, harvesting and pressing is done strictly by hand on steep hills exceeding 350 meters above sea level. The ancient “Guyot” method of pruning is employed which results in lower grape yields but in grapes of highest quality, ensuring outstanding results.

a Plume du Peintre - "feather of the painter" - wines (Lirac, Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Tavel) are only made in select years representing outstanding quality.
Deep ruby red, opaque. Aromas of red fruits, mocha, touches of leather, black truffles and coffee. Fat, very concentrated and full flavored, with an infinitely long liquoriced and fruity finish.
Pairs well with red meats, sauce dishes, game animals (woodcock, wild boar) and semi mature cheeses.

Lastly, and a tiny production cuvée based on 100% Grenache brought up in new barrels, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Plume Du Peintre reveals a saturated, almost inky purple color as well as a mammoth-sized bouquet of blackcurrants, bloody meats, lead pencil, tobacco, chocolate, and crushed stone. A monster of a wine in every way, it nevertheless has notable purity, a full-bodied, layered, seamless texture, no hard edges, and a thrilling finish that offers more and more minerality with time in the glass. You don't see wines like this often today, but this is a singular, heavenly Grenache that's going to need 4-5 years of bottle age and live for 30-40 years if stored correctly given its concentration, structure, and purity. Hats off to the team at Domaine de la Mordorée for continuing to push the envelope and making incredibly singular wines!

Lovely nose of very ripe damson fruit and coffee bean oak. Surprisingly only medium-bodied for Châteauneuf, but so intense and concentrated, really vibrant and energetic. Tannins are fine, quite discreet but integral. Acidity is low but the freshness makes it feel balanced, and there's a lovely sense of finesse and a gathered, silk-rope finish. The oak is very well judged, it adds complexity, structure and length. Absolutely lovely wine; such class and will age brilliantly, and you don't sense the alcohol. You can drink young, and it will impress, but I would start from 2027. 2,300 bottles made. Old vines from La Crau, destemmed grapes.

After the inaugural 2003 and 2005, the 2019 is the third showing of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Plume du Peintre. A single-varietal Grenache from the La Crau lieu-dit, it saw no new oak during élevage. Dark and brooding, it unwinds with explosive black fruits, crushed rocks, melted licorice and dried violets. Flamboyant to the core, the 2019 is clearly aimed at drinkers looking for power and concentration rather than elegance and delicacy. Grippy tannins provide notable structure. I recommend not touching this elixir prior to 2030. After that, it will deliver for at least a decade. Production totaled only 2,000 bottles.

While it is brooding and deep, there is also a perfumed, floral and herbal aspect that makes it so attractive and unforgettable, even at such an embryonic stage. Freshly crushed blueberries, dried licorice, decadent violets, crushed stones and ash on the nose. Satin-textured tannins on the palate, which are tense, chalky and seamless. Powerful and juicy with impeccable balance. A great, cerebral and intrinsic malbec from Argentina. You can drink now, if you want, but it is a wine that you’d want to keep for the next two decades. Rudi Pichler is among the elite growers of the Wachau producing wines of precision, power, and longevity. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling make up 95% of the production with the remaining 5% shared between Weißburgunder and Roter Veltliner. Rudi Pichler belongs to the prestigious Vinea Wachau and vinifies under the strict parameters of their codex.
Yields are kept low between 30 and 35 hectoliters per hectare with botrytis carefully removed by hand. Grapes are crushed by foot and receive between three and 36 hours of maceration on the skins. Vinification is entirely in stainless-steel tanks and malolactic fermentation is avoided.
Hochrain, a name meaning "high place," is a southeast-facing terraced vineyard in Wösendorf sitting between 200 and 300 meters of elevation. The vineyard consists of an unusually high content of loess, a mineral-laden soil that produces wines that are especially broad and rich.

Tasted blind, in a lineup that included vintages back to 2010, a barrel sample of Spottswoode's 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon stood out as being one of the most exciting efforts. Full-bodied, ripe and rich without being overbearing, it delivers concentrated black cherry and cassis fruit framed by supple, velvety-textured tannins. It's long on the finish, with an attractively soft, dusty-loamy texture and no overt signs of a fire-troubled Napa vintage.

2020 Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery, Cabernet Sauvignon - St. Helena NV /// Lovely fragrant blackberry and black cherry fruit, cassis, and rich tobacco spices with lovely fresh earth notes and a sweet kiss of new wood cedar. Incredibly concentrated dark berry fruit with fabulously angular tannins with smooth long beams with crisp edges. Slated for a September 2024 release, Spottswoode's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon comes across as more vibrant, floral and fresh than the 2020. Violet and cassis notes are accented by hints of crushed stone and pencil shavings on the nose. The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, tasted as a barrel sample, has 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot in the blend. Deep garnet-purple in color, it springs with notes of cedar chest, cinnamon toast, and black cherry preserves, leading to a core of blackcurrant pastilles, potpourri, and mocha. Medium-bodied, and big on flavors, the palate delivers mouth-coating black fruits with a rock-solid structure of firm tannins and lively acidity, finishing long. Approximately 3,500 cases are to be bottled. Spottswoode finished picking just the day before the Glass Fire broke out. Winemaker Aron Weinkauf says that there was not a lot smoke here from that year's LNU fires.

“1752” is the name of the Damilano Barolo Cannubi Riserva, in honor of the year in which the historic bottle was first marked “Cannubi”. It still exists today perfectly conserved by the Manzone family in Bra, close to Barolo. The bottle is clearly marked as being of “1752” vintage, indicating that Cannubi historically precedes Barolo.
About the Vineyard:
The Cannubi Cru is in found within one of the 6 core zones which comprise a UNESCO heritage site in Italy. A mixture of Tortonian and Helvetian calcareous marl gives the grapes intense aromas of cherry, plum and tobacco, rose and violet in sequence. Its low potassium and high calcium/magnesium content offer the wine a fine and polished touch. The vineyard is located at about 270 m. a.s.l. and has a south-east sun exposure. Barolo Riserva Cannubi 1752 It is a small plot of about 2 hectares of Nebbiolo vines, currently between 30 and 50 years of age.
Tasting Notes:
Garnet ruby red in color, the bouquet is intense and balanced, with notes of violet, red fruit, cherry and plum, spices, liquorice, cocoa, leather and tobacco. Dry, robust, full-bodied, very persistent, rich and velvety
Food Pairing:
This wine is excellent with typical piedmontes pasta (tajarin, ravioli); perfect with red meat, braised and roast meat, game and absolutely ideal with all types of cheeses.

Filippino Elio Barbaresco San Cristoforo Riserva 10 Anni is made from 100% Nebbiolo.
This Riserva 100% Nebbiolo is produced on the hillsides of the San Cristoforo vineyard in Neive. A beautiful wine, full of fruity aromas, violet and raspberries, along with spicy hints of cinnamon, tobacco and vanilla. Full-bodied and elegant with intense flavors.
The best grapes are delicately pressed and the stalks are removed. The must ferments in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 26°C with a maceration of 25 days. After racking, the new wine is put into 15-25 hl Slavonian oak casks for long months. Next, it is bottled and left to age for at least 7 years. The tenth year the wine is ready for the market.

Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova 2018 is made from 100% Sangiovese.
Founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri and today led by his son Giacomo, Casanova di Neri is one of Montalcino's most acclaimed estates, farming a mosaic of vineyards across the appellation. Tenuta Nuova is their benchmark cru bottling — richly styled yet precise, and long regarded as one of Brunello's reference wines.
Brunello di Montalcino is made entirely from Sangiovese grown on the hills around the town of Montalcino in southern Tuscany, and aged for years before release. The Tenuta Nuova fruit comes from the warmer south-eastern side of the DOCG; the cooler, classically proportioned 2018 vintage yielded balanced, aromatic wines with fine, chewy tannins.

I like the floral and saline undertones. So precise and fresh with a tight finish. Crushed stones at the end. Try in 2025, but already attractive to taste and drink.

This 2018 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova has a black-toned ruby color. It is very young and closed on the nose; blue-black berry fruit aromas are at the moment dominated by a slightly heavy oak note of cream, spice and leather. On the palate there are firm, chewy tannins and dark flavors. This is a robust style of Brunello, perhaps on its way to becoming more approachable at an early age, but at the moment the style is firmly robust and powerful. The fruit for the Tenuta Nuova comes from the warmer south-eastern part of the DOCG.

Here's a treat from Casanova di Neri. Aged in tonneaux for 30 months, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is fleshed out and rich, with pretty layers of dark fruit, dried blackberry, spice, and cured tobacco. There’s a hint of sour cherry in this vintage that folds into crushed flower, balsamic herb, licorice, and crushed stone. The bouquet is classic, but the Casanova di Neri magic touch comes through thanks to the wine’s balance and lovely intensity. I can’t, however, overlook a powerful 15% alcohol content that leaves its mark. This is a production of 67,740 bottles.
