Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a dark skinned grape that is used to produce red wine It is most famours for making the rose and tar aroma of Barolo wines produced in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. The name of the grape is evocative of its home in the foothills of the western Alps. Nebbia is Italian for fog, which arrives in the early mornings in October. The Nebbiolo grape is harvested during this time. Producing light colored red wines, Nebbiolo grapes are known for making wines that can be quite tannic when young. As these same wines age, the characteristics tend to take on a brick-orange hue at the rim of the glass. When fully matured, the wines finally reveal other flavors and aromas such as wild herbs, violets, tar, raspberries, cherries, tobacco, prunes, and truffles. Nebbiolo wines often require years of aging in order to balance the tannins with the other characteristics. Wines from Nebbiolo grapes have large amounts of tannin and acid. The majority of wines are built for aging, in fact, some of the highest quality vintages need to age at least a decade. Some vintages can age upwards of 30 years when the bouquet becomes appealing and much more complex. Other Nebbiolo aromas include leather, dried fruit, damsons, mulberries, fresh and dried herbs, and mulberries.

Fenocchio DOCG Barolo 2014

Fenocchio Barolo 2010 is 100 percent Nebbiolo.

Claudio and Albino Fenocchio own 10 hectares of vineyards. This Barolo comes from a blend of Bussia in Monforte d'Alba and Castellero in Barolo. The soil in Bussia is helvetian ( limestone and clayey blue marl) which contributes much to the fullness and excellent aging potential of these wines. The Castellaro vineyard is of tortonian soil (blue marl and sandstone mixed with sand) which gives a velvety mouth feel and exceptional aromatics. The vines are an average of 30 years old.

Color: Ruby red with garnet reflections
Bouquet: Rich bouquet with hints of blueberries, roses and liquorice.
Taste: Densely structured with a full, complex flavor. It is an elegant wine with firm tannins and good acidity that will become velvety and graceful with age. This wine is generous and bold. The finish is long and lingering.

Long slow natural fermentation without the addition of yeasts for 30 days. Closed stainless steel vat fermentation with frequent pumping over maintains the temperature at a constant 29°C. This extracts greater aromatics while causing the heavier tannins to break down and to precipitate out.

Acidity: 5.2
Alcohol by Volume: 14.5 %

Game, grilled and roasted red meats and ripe and mature cheeses. Dishes with truffles.

Review:

Aromas of rose, red berry and eucalyptus mingle with whiffs of exotic spice on the gorgeous, fragrant red. Loaded with finesse and tension, the elegant, structured palate delivers crushed raspberry, white pepper and star anise set against fresh acidity and taut, lithe tannins. It's already compelling, but hold for even more complexity. Drink 2022–2036. -KERIN O’KEEFE Wine Enthusiast 98 Points

This gorgeous red evokes rose, strawberry, raspberry and cherry fruit, shaded by tobacco, tar and wild thyme notes. Pure, sleek and intense, with a firm base of tannins and vibrant acidity for support. This should evolve beautifully. Be patient. Best from 2022 through 2043. 1,800 cases imported.  -Wine Spectator 96 Points

Gaja's 2016 Barbaresco is positively stellar. A wine of poise and grace, the 2016 has so much to offer. Expressive spice and floral notes open up first, but what really stands out is the wine's nuance and delineation. There is a sense of translucency to the 2016 that is impossible to miss. Sweet red cherry, mint, cinnamon and rose petal develop in the glass, adding further shades of nuance. Quite simply, the 2016 is one of the very finest Gaja Barbarescos in recent memory. This is such a gorgeous wine. Don't miss it. -- Antonio Galloni 96 Points

I tasted this wine over two sittings, one at the winery and one at my home office a few weeks later. Although I can't claim any extraordinary differences between the two sessions, I noticed a few minimal shifts that are essential to understanding the wine's future aging ability. The 2016 Barbaresco starts off slow at first, showing a small margin of aromatic evolution in the glass. But come back two hours later, and you can almost hear the soft sounds of the symphony playing just below the surface. The 2016 vintage is characterized by the solid intensity and firmness of its aromas, which transcend fruit and veer toward balsamic herb, licorice, tar and smoke instead. The tannins offer a moment of sweetness and softness, before you are aware of their undeniable firmness. In all, there is a certain glossiness or satiny quality to the mouthfeel that underlines the wine's carefully crafted integration. I would describe this as a classic and also a somewhat austere Barbaresco that fully deserves extra cellar time to stretch those tight muscles and grow in volume. This wine will award those who wait. -Wine Advocate 96 Points
