Wine from Italy

Filter

Italy is the world’s second largest wine producing country falling behind France. Italian wine is governed by DOC and DOCG laws. Much like France’s AOC laws, they control what grape types can be planted in each region. Some of Italy’s more famous wines are the Barolo in the Piedmont  region, often referred to as the king of wine, and its queen, Barbaresco.  Perhaps the most famous of all the regions is Tuscany, not only for its beauty, but the amazing Chianti and Brunello’s that are produced in this region. Both are made from the Sangiovese grape. In the Veneto region you will find Italian wines created from the Corvina grape, made in the ancient Amarone style.

Aura di Valerie Amarone della Valpolicella 2017

The first kosher Amarone! Amarone undergoes a very unique process prior to fermentation. In late October, grapes are harvested and allowed to dry for around 120 days. Known as the “appassimento” technique, the drying process traditionally occurs on straw mats or in temperature controlled drying chambers. This process helps concentrate the juices and increases skin contact, giving the wine a very ripe, full-bodied flavor. There is no other wine like it! The unique flavors of Amarone, including dark chocolate, coffee, dark fruit and light notes of cherry, pair beautifully with steak, stews, and bold cheeses.

The color is deep bright, ruby red with a violet edge. Powerful bouquet and intense aromas of cherry, ripe plum, toasted almond, and vanilla. A full bodied wine with round and rich flavor.

Review:

Underbrush, ripe berry, new leather and Mediterranean herb aromas slowly take shape in the glass. Showing youthful tension, the vibrant palate delivers red cherry, pomegranate, white pepper and pipe tobacco notes framed by bright acidity and taut, refined tannins. It already shows great balance and finesse but is still young and tight. Drink 2022–2035.

Review:

This firmly structured, focused red offers aromas of red berry, fragrant blue flowers, menthol, oak and spices. The assertive palate evokes cranberry, sour cherry, star anise, underbrush and orange zest set against tightly knit, close-grained tannins that leave a rather drying finish, while racy acidity lends balance. It's still tight and youthfully austere, so give it ample time to fully open up and develop. Drink 2026–2041.

-Wine Enthusiast 95 Points

Notable for its purity and supple texture, this red exhibits strawberry, cherry, currant and floral aromas and flavors, backed by a precise line of tannins. It feels balanced, if a little pinched by the tannins on the finish now. Best from 2023 through 2040. 1,000 cases made, 200 cases imported.
