Elio Filippino’s winery is located in the picturesque village of Neive - a UNESCO site, on the right bank of the Tanaro River and very close to Alba, the truffle capital. This location presents a magical landscape of steep hills, particularly suitable for fine and aromatic nuances in the wines. The main production of wine derives from two magnificent estates on the hills around Neive: Serra Capelli and San Cristoforo, regarded as one of the most beautiful hills of the entire Barbaresco grape-growing region, offering a breathtaking panorama that stretches from the Langhe to the province of Asti.
It was there, in the Frazione Serra Capelli, that Evaristo Filippino introduced his first vineyard in the early 1900’s, that was destined to evolve over time. During the 1950’s, his son, Domenico used his intuition and his father’s precious grapes to follow with his own production of delectable wines.
Today, after the untimely death in 1997 of his father Domenico, Elio Filippino is the third generation of winemaker of the estate, continuing his family’s tradition of superior winemaking while maintaining the greatest respect for the environment. Elio argues that “true quality comes from the vineyard, which does its best to produce excellent quality grapes.” Pruning, harvesting and pressing is done strictly by hand on steep hills exceeding 350 meters above sea level. The ancient “Guyot” method of pruning is employed which results in lower grape yields but in grapes of highest quality, ensuring outstanding results.

Chavy-Chouet Bourgogne Rouge La Taupe is made from 100 percent Pinot Noir.
Chavy-Chouet's Pinot Noir is classified as humble Bourgogne Rouge, but the fruit for it comes from an excellent single-vineyard site near Pommard. La Taupe's parcel was once part of the Pommard AOC.
The wine is juicy with a great mouthfeel. It has classic Bourgogne Rouge aromas, with a candied cherry character as well as strawberry, raspberry and spice, yet the structure and length of finish reminds one of a Pommard - ripe & rich with a bigger body.

Ripe redcurrants, rose petals, baking spices, and assorted warm, earthy notes all emerge from the 2023 Bourgogne Rouge La Taupe, a medium-bodied red Burgundy that's balanced and has a layered, tight, grippy mouthfeel, integrated acidity, and a great finish. It's beautifully done, and I'd certainly happily drink a bottle. It goes to show that there are still plenty of beautiful wines at reasonable prices in Burgundy today. This should have 7-8 years of longevity, and it will probably be better this time next year. I think the 2023 is a solid step up over the more forward, charming 2022. Drink 2026-2033.

Deep ruby red color with violet highlights and a pleasant and fruity bouquet. Full bodied, soft tannins and good acidity.

Filippino Elio Barbera d'Alba Superiore is made from 100% Barbera.
This 100% Barbera shows an intense fruity bouquet with subtle vanilla and toasty notes. Full and spicy flavors, and a good body.
The grapes are pressed and the stalks are removed. The must ferments at about 26°C for 6-9 days. After racking, before the end of fermentation, the new wine is put in 225 liter Allier barriques for long months, depending on the vintage and the wine’s structure. It is subsequently moved into stainless steel vats to rest for some months before bottling.

This Barbaresco is a classic through and through, with aromas of red plum, cranberry, and rose petal. Notes of tobacco, forest floor and porcini lift out of the glass as the wine opens. The wine's flavors are as pure as a freshly tuned instrument, with tart red berried fruits, dried herbs and herbal tea notes all buttressed by a mouthwatering acidity that keeps you coming back for more. The youthful tannins provide structure without overwhelming the senses, promising a long and graceful evolution in the cellar. Drink 2025 - 2040

After racking, the new wine is put into 15-25 hl Slavonian oak casks for long months. Next, it is bottled and left to age for at least 7 years. The tenth year the wine is ready for the market.

A round and beautiful wine where the new wood is starting to resolve itself into the wine. It’s full-bodied with layered tannins and juicy fruit. It’s structured and delicious for a 2012. Drink or hold.

Made from 100% manual harvest Nebbiolo, the wine comes from the hillsides of San Cristoforo hill in Neive enjoying a south-southwest exposure. Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is made from 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, 5% divers.
In contrast to Chaupin, which is made from old-vine Grenache on sandy soils, the cuvée Vieilles Vignes is from old vines of Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah along with smaller percentages of other permitted varieties that are grown in these old vineyards. The wine is sourced from 4 terroirs: pebbly clay, sand, gravelly red clay and sandy limestone. Vieilles Vignes is always the most powerful and concentrated Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvée made at Domaine de la Janasse.

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes also saw some stems (the estate started keeping some stems with the 2016 vintage) and was 75 destemmed, with the blend being 70 Grenache, 20 Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah, Cinsault, and Terret Noir. As usual, it’s a more powerful, black-fruited wine comparted to the Cuvée Chaupin and has lots of crème de cassis, liquid violet, crushed stone, woodsmoke, and peppery herbs. It displays the vintage’s purity and freshness yet brings the concentration as well as the structure. I’ll be shocked if it’s not in the handful of top wines in the vintage. 96-98 Points

Not terribly dark in the glass, but this has real power and concentration yet no heaviness. It's very well judged, not too much, no over-extraction, just a really classic Châteauneuf imprint that's balanced and charming without being forced or exaggerated. It's young but drinkable already, and will age well too. That's balance for you. From very old vines, fermented in concrete, matured for 12 months in foudres and demi-muids.

Yes, it has those classic peppery aromas on the medium-bodied palate, but there’s also an entire floral dimension that makes it stand out so prominently. Then comes the extremely long, silky and refined finish that’s incredibly sensuous. Sustainable. Drink or hold.
