Keermont Estate Reserve Red Blend is made from 36% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, 10% Malbec, 6% Syrah, 4% Petit Verdot

The Keermont Estate Reserve is the winery's flagship red blend. With this blend they aim to bring to life the nuances of both the terroir at Keermont Vineyards and the particular vintage.

Venetian red in color, this wine exudes complex aromas of ripe cherry, wild berries, and dusty 'fynbos'. The palate has an array of ripe berries, cherry sherbet, crushed herbs and spices. Elegant but firm tannin affords the wine a long dry succulent finish.  

All grapes are grown on Keermont Vineyards. Most of the vineyard parcels grow on deep red clay rich soil derived from sandstone and granite and are surrounded by indigenous vegetation. They lie between 250 and 400 meters above sea level in the valley between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountain ranges and have a variety of aspects from North East to West facing.

Small batches of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. This process is carried out gently and naturally in open top fermenters using traditional methods only. This wine spent 22 months maturing in French oak barrels (20% new) before being bottled by hand without filtration

"This 2013 Estate Reserve was previously known as just "Keermont" since the estate wanted to keep the wine before release. A lot of fruit was lost to wind during flowering, ergo there is a little more Cabernet in the blend. The wine spent 22 months maturing in French oak barrels (20% new) before being bottled by hand without filtration on December 22, 2014. It has a precise, detailed bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, cold stone and just a touch of iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity and quite strict tannin, grippy in the mouth, yet very elegant, presenting a lingering, almost Saint-Julien-like finish. Give this another year in bottle and you will have a very fine wine in your possession. - Neal Martin"

"This is Keermont’s flagship wine, the first wine made under the label in 2007. It sees 2 years in oak and is kept in bottle another 2 years before release. Richly aromatic with spice and fynbos/herbal notes. Fabulous, layered texture of rich, dense dark red fruit seamlessly integrated with toasted oak. A blend of 36% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Fanc, 10% Malbec, 6% Syrah and 4% Petit Verdot. 14.5% alc. Alex has been gradually increasing the percent of Cabernet Franc in this wine over time."

Winery: Keermont Vineyards

The Keermont Estate and Vineyards

Located just beyond Stellenbosch, Keermont Vineyards is nestled in farm land in the beautiful valleys of South Africa. Keermont uses their name to honor the former farm, Keerweder, that once occupied their land. The word “keerweder” means a dead end in a valley. The literal translation is “blocked again”, which is in reference to the early settlers being blocked by the terrain when trying to pass through the valley.

The Keermont winery building and vineyards actually lie in the shadow of Guardian Peak, or “Suurberg”. This location is ideal for Keermont, as the fruit on this mountain is often compared to the grapes of Napa Valley’s famous Howell Mountain AVA.

In 1694, Jan Jac Van Dyk founded the land in the Blaawklippen Valley that is the location of present day Keermont. Other wineries such as Waterford, Dornier, and Stellenzicht are also on the land once owned by Van Dyk. The earliest account of a European landowner utilizing the area for agricultural use are Van Dyk’s records. Afterwards, the potential and beauty of the Blaawklippen Valley attracted many other landowners to the area and the land was divided into individual farms.

Mark and Monica Wraith bought into this land by purchasing the Fleurfontein and Keerweder III farms in 2003. They combined the two farms into the Keermont Vineyards Estate. The couple still live on the Keermont land with their family. Alex Starey is the Keermont winemaker. In 2005, Keermont began a major vineyard planting program and it now holds 27 ha under vine. In 2007, Keermont releases its first vintage, from a crop of only 5 barrels or 108 cases. In 2010, the physical Keermont winery building, complete with offices, processing facilities, barrel rooms, and a tasting room, was converted from the former spring water bottling plant that had once resided on the Fleurfontein farm. The total farm acreage for Keermont Vineyards is 157 hectares or 388 acres, with 27 hectares under vine. 18 hectares produce red varietals such as Cabernet Savignon, Merlot, and Syrah. 9 hectares hold the white varietals like Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, and Viognier. Keermont also boasts Chenin Blanc vines that are over forty years old and used by De Trafford winery. Keermont aims to create wines that reflect their beautiful land and the particular year’s vintage condition. Keermont focuses on using minimal chemical fertilizers, few pesticides, and irrigate as little as possible. No fining or filtration is practiced on the Keermont Estate. Keermont desires a natural, harmonious vineyard that will in the long run produce better quality wines.

Voix de la Vigne Pinot Noir 2015

Voix de la Vigne Pinot Noir is 100 percent Pinot Noir. Vintage report: Higher than normal temperatures in spring allowed for early bloom, flower and fruit-set in perfect conditions. The last rains were waved away on the second of June and the Willamette Valley enjoyed a warm and dry growing season with temperatures never threatening over-ripeness. The harvest began in the last week of August, almost a full month earlier than normal. Grape clusters were larger than usual as a result of a very giving vintage, allowing for larger yields at high levels of quality. A twin to 2014, although a year apart, the 2015 vintage provided pristinely clean fruit with minimal ill-effects due to disease, pests and birds. With the wines showing extraordinary balance between fruit, sugar and acidity, the harmony of the 2015 vintage sets the stage for some stellar Oregon wines.

Tasting Notes: Fresh raspberry aromas open immediately on the nose followed by darker fruits, brambles and a touch of black pepper. The flavors on the palate are exuberant red berries with a slight hint of dried herbs. The mouthfeel is fresh with balanced fruit and the finish lingers with a soft velvet texture.

Age of the vines: between 8 and 35 years old.
Soil: Volcanic and Sedimentary
The fruit underwent a two-day soak prior to fermentation for a total of nineteen days of skin contact. 100% malolactic fermentation occurred over a five month period.
Wine was slightly filtered before bottling.

Thorn Clarke Terra Barossa Shiraz is made from 100 percent Shiraz

Comments

Lighter in style than usual, the wine offers aromas of sweet berry fruits, plums, pepper and spice. There is rich fruit on the palate displaying plums, blackberry and sweet spice from the subtle oak. Nice soft tannins are accompanied by great length of fruit flavour.

Vinification Notes

The grapes are crushed and de-stemmed into fermenters. Yeast is added immediately once in fermenter and the ferments are pumped over twice daily to maximise colour, tannin and flavour extraction. Cooling is used to ensure ferment temperatures remain in the 22-25 degree celcius range which will allow the fruit to display maximum fruit expression. Pressing then occurs approximately seven days after crushing and the  wine is then put into predominately American oak to mature.

"If you think the flavours and texture of this wine more akin to the Eden Valley than the Barossa Valley, you're probably right - three of the four estate vineyards are in the Eden Valley, on in the Barossa Valley. This is an intense wine with a bright scarlet colour. Pure grapey aromas are complimented by red spices, herbs and lavender. The palate has a gentle entry with subtle spicy fruit flavours filling the mid palate. The tight structure gives the wine a succulent dry finish with lingering flavours of red fruit, anise, liquorice and a mineral saltiness.

All grapes used in producing our wines are grown on Keermont Vineyards. Small parcels of grapes are selected according to optimal ripeness and harvested by hand. The grapes are vinified gently and naturally following traditional techniques.

"The 2015 Topside Syrah comes from dry-farmed vines on decomposed granite and sandstone soils at 350-400 meters above sea level. It spent 20 months maturing in seasoned 500-liter French oak barrels before being bottled by hand without filtration. It has a perfumed, Côte-Rôtie-like bouquet of detailed blackberry, briar and light iris aromas, and just a little chalkiness in the background. Keermont Merlot 2014

The  Keermont Merlot is crimson to strawberry red in color. The nose opens with aromas of sweet cherries, but evolves into savory clove and forest floor notes. On the palate, the wine has a soft and subtle entry. The tannin structure is dusty and firm, but not overpowering. A fresh line of natural acidity holds the wine together from the initial flavors of red berries and herbal tomato paste through to a dry spicy finish. Drink 2016-2022.

Aged 22 months in French Oak Barrels.

Avennia Valery Red Blend 2013

 

Avennia Valery Red Blend is made from 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc

Valery is named for the patron saint of wine in the St. Emilion region that inspired it.
We started with old vine Merlot from a stony block in the heart of the Yakima Valley and added complex, aromatic Cabernet Franc from the Horse Heaven Hills. The result is a balanced, complex wine with the elegance and ethereal perfume that this blend of two of Washington’s best varietals are known for.

The nose on this wine is very perfumed, almost exotic with notes of fresh violets, red plum, winter mint, fresh herbs and crushed limestone qualities. The palate is poised and balanced, with red fruits and mocha powder encapsulated in limestone. The finish lingers delicately, with the Cabernet Franc asserting a light tobacco and herb note, giving depth. A compelling wine that will continue to unwind for 7-10 years in the cellar.


Review:

A blend of 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc, the 2013 Valery comes from 1986 plantings and sees moderate levels of new oak. Elegant, medium-bodied, supple and pretty, with perfumed notes of red plums, blackberry, spice-box and dried earth, it opens up nicely in the glass and has outstanding length. If it puts on weight in bottle, the score will be low.

Winemaker Chris Peterson calls 2012 an "Iconic vintage," adding that there were no heat spikes and that it's as good as, if not better than, 2007. I'm in complete agreement with him and loved these latest releases. Chris's wines always have firm, savory characters, yet back it up with serious mid-palate depth and concentration. Keermont White Blend Terrasse 2012

The 2012 Terrasse is a blend of 31% Chenin Blanc, 30% Chardonnay, 30% Sauvignon Blanc and 9% Viognier that sees 12 months in 225-liter and 500-liter barrels. It has a pleasant bouquet with yellow plum, apricot and lemon curd scents that harken toward the southern Rhone. The palate is well-balanced with a vibrant entry, effervescent orange peel and tangerine notes and a soft creamy finish. Keermont White Blend Terrasse 2012 is made from 31% Chenin Blanc (Riverside parcel - Low Road Parcel), 30% Chardonnay, 30% Sauvignon Blanc and 9% Viognier.

An attractive light autumn yellow color, lime and melons on the nose with light oak and nut aromas, palate defined by a central core of fresh acidity with layers of fruit and rich lees. Drink now through 2020.

Keermont White Blend Terrasse derives its name from the terraced vineyards from which the grapes are harvested. The backbone of the blend is Chenin blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. Total production was just six barrels yielding 1575 bottles. All grapes used in producing this wine were grown on Keermont Vineyards. Small parcels of grapes were specifically selected, harvested by hand and were gently and naturally vinified. The wine was fermented and then spent a further 11 months maturing on the lees in French oak barrels. Bottling was carried out by hand without filtration, so if you are lucky you may find a little lees in the bottom of your bottle.

Keermont White Blend Terrasse 2016

Keermont White Blend is made from 39% Chenin Blanc (34% Riverside parcel - 26% Low Road Parcel and 5% Bobbejaan parcel), 34% Sauvignon Blanc (Uitkyk parcel), 14% Viognier (Cottage Lane parcel) and 13% Chardonnay (Low Road Parcel).


A polished light yellow gold color, this wine has a bouquet of citrus blossom with hazelnut, lemon grass and butterscotch undertones. The wine has a soft sweet entry with a racy linear acidity. Ripe citrus and stone fruit flavours evolve into a lovely lingering dry earthy finish. This is a textured white wine with layers of flavour. 


"The 2016 Keermont Terrasse underwent a little skin contact and was barrel-fermented in 225- and 500-liter barrels with around 10% new oak for 12 months. It has a fresh bouquet of white peach, honeysuckle and a touch of melted candle wax. The palate is well balanced, considering that Alex Starey said it was the first vintage that endured drought problems (hence the higher percentage of Sauvignon Blanc), offering grass clipping, gooseberry and nettle toward the finish. "Always a crowd pleaser, the Terrasse shows very appealing white stone fruit, lemon curd and floral scents. Softly textured with good backbone and firm acidity complementing riper stone fruit and citrus flavors. A blend of 39% Chenin Blanc, 34% Sauvignon blanc, 14% Viognier and 13% Chardonnay fermented and aged in used 500L barrels for 12 months. Lees stirred only during fermentation then left to sit on the lees.13% alc."

Chavy-Chouet Saint-Aubin Premier Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien is made from 100 percent Chardonnay.

The wine is produced from 30 year-old vines overlooking the grand crus of Puligny-Montrachet. The vines grow on limestone soils covered with white pebble stones.
The altitude and the poor soil result in a fine, subtle wine with bright acidity. It is a feminine wine that evolves slowly with floral and spicy notes before taking on greater density and revealing its power.

Ageing in oak barrels for 12 months (20% new).100% Chardonnay of 30 years of age.
The vineyard measures 0.17 hectare with a plenting density of 10,000 vines per hectare.
