Winemaking Report
Fruit was harvested in the cool of the night and gently pressed. The juice was fermented in French oak barrels (35% new, 65% aged). Various components underwent: a wild ferment, malolactic fermentation and extended lees contact to give the wine further complexity and flavour. Individual parcels were selected and blended, then filtered to produce this Chardonnay without compromising the purity of the fruit in both flavour and aroma.
Review:
The 2022 Chardonnay opens with layers of generous fruit in the form of fruit salad and musky peach, with a touch of drizzled honey aromas kept in shape by spicy oak. There is a touch of development now, with toasted nut and gingery flavors lifted by tangy acidity that is starting to tighten up the finish.

From the small Padthaway region three hours' drive east of Adelaide, this is a full-bodied Cab that, despite the region's warm climate, avoids being bombastic. The nose feels Christmasy: baking spices laced with purple beets, dried mint and red berries. In the mouth it's ripe and generous, and there's a fair bit of oak showing but all is held at bay by taut, fine-grained tannins. Drink through 2025.

Quite deeply coloured, it opens up with an array of red and black fruit pastille aromas topped by bay leaf and black pepper backed up by a decent dose of oak – French and American, adding vanilla bean and toasted coconut. It’s then quite chunky on the palate, delivering plenty in both the flavour and complexity department. The fruit is fleshy and generous while reasonable tannins are well integrated and provide a solid backbone to fruit and oak. The Morambro Creek Estate
The property was founded in 1994 by the Bryson Family who first settled in the Padthaway region in 1955. In the early 1990's the Brysons decided to take the plunge and plant vines on the property. Initially their plan was to sell these grapes to the big wine producers but after a few vintages, the desire to see the fruits of their labour turned into their own wine, was just too great for them to resist. In 1998 they held onto a small selection of their fruits and sent it to the Cape Jaffa Winery to be made into wine. Morambro Creek was born, the name coming from the creek that meanders through the property.

The Morambro Creek Vineyards
They farm 420 acres, separated into two plots each of 210 acres, about 7-8 kilometers apart. The vines enjoy a cool Mediterranean climate with plentiful winter / spring rainfall and the limestone subsoil that provides the excellent drainage. The grapes varieties cultivated here are Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.
At Morambro Creek, their sole objective is to produce the best wines possible from their unique vineyard site. Planted on own rootstock and located in the Padthaway valley which is comprised of rich Terra Rosa soils their estate vineyard benefits from excellent sun exposure producing grapes of optimum flavor, color and tannin development. The warm summer days are moderated each evening by coastal winds that cool the vines and result in a longer ripening period. This extended period allows for the grape tannins and seed to fully ripen prior to being harvested, thus creating wines that are rich and supple on the palate.
Their pursuit of great wine can also be seen in the meticulous management of their vineyard. They strive for low crop yields and small grape bunches of intense flavor, and whilst they employ the latest technology in the vineyard to help them achieve vine balance and reduced vigor, they harvest when the fruit reaches full flavor development.

Winemaking Notes The grapes are handpicked in small baskets late August and are gently pressed as whole clusters. After a settling of 24 hours, the juice is inoculated with selected Champagne yeast and ferments in stainless steel tanks at low temperature. Once the fermentation is over, the wine ages on the fine lees until the spring of the following year. The blend is then put together and cold-stabilized prior to bottling. The bottling occurs in the spring when the cellar temperature is conducive to a second fermentation in the bottle. The now sparkling wine will age on the yeast for over 24 months. At disgorging, a small amount of dosage liquor is added in order to balance the natural acidity.

Vineyard Notes
The Poetry Vineyard, carved into a steep west-facing hillside, reaches from the highest elevations of the Stags Leap District appellation to the valley floor. This vineyard draws its uniqueness from shallow, volcanic soils atop fractured shale. Due to the stressful nature of the site, planted with high vine density and farmed to very low yields, the vines develop slowly and produce small flavorful berries. The vineyard is planted to legendary, proprietary heritage selections of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Production Notes
In the cool darkness of night, grapes were hand-picked into twenty-five-pound bins to minimize crushing. By early morning, the grapes were subjected to rigorous selection by our three-tiered sorting process, which includes our cutting-edge optical sorter and a slow, individual berry hand sort. Whole berries were gently delivered by gravity to tank by our unique crane system, which kept the berries intact. Cold soaks lasted from five to eight days, and fermentations were managed through a combination of pump overs and délestage. Extended maceration of up to six weeks ensured exceptional extraction and fine-tuning of tannin profiles.
Winemaker Notes
There is an effortlessness and ease to the 2021 Poetry that springs from the continuity and familiarity of its caretakers and the experience of the vines themselves as their roots dig deep into the shallow unforgiving terraces of rock and rhyolitic crevices. Wafts of warm summer mulberries, fractured rock, and violet perfume envelop the glass. Wild blackberry preserves form the flavor on the entry and combine with tantalizing, black truffle, sea salt, and steak au poivre juices. Licenciado Rioja Reserva 2021 is made from Tempranillo.
This single-vineyard wine comes from the same site used to make the Gran Reserva. Licenciado shows a ruby-red color with outstanding aromas of wild berries, vanilla and spice. The palate is well-balanced, rounded and elegant, offering black pepper, ripe black fruit and vanilla; its freshness, oak aging and extraction give it a longevity of at least ten years from the harvest. Bottled in 1.5-liter magnums.
