This small six-hectare domaine located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet is making rapid strides. Philippe Pernot (a scion of the Paul Pernot dynasty) launched the Pernot-Belicard label in 2009 after marrying Miss Belicard, daughter of Mr Belicard (who owned vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet). In the vineyards, Philippe cultivates the soils, de-buds aggressively and takes pains to retain his old vines in good health. The grapes are harvested by hand, with Philippe typically among the earlier pickers in the village. Since 2014, there's more sorting, the grapes passing over a shaker table before being whole cluster pressed. Initially, the wines were bottled to make room for the new vintage, but Philippe, evidently an inquiring mind, felt that something was missing: now, the wines stay in barrel until August, but spend an additional three to six months in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks with the fine lees. The result are wines that are more integrated and complete. These are already very good wines, and Philippe possesses some enviable parcels, but it is his desire to refine and improve that marks this out as an estate to watch.

Sad to say, but these days, when you can find top-notch village Puligny-Montrachet for under a $100, it qualifies as a bargain. Unsurprisingly given the producer and vintage, Pernot-Belicard’s rendition, from 10 parcels throughout the AOC, is stunning. It captures your attention with great aromatics and keeps it with a finesse-filled combination of delicate, peach-like fruitiness combined with mineral accents. The vibrancy of the vintage helps keep it all together and balanced. This long and refined wine explains why Puligny-Montrachet has the lofty reputation it does. Aromas of white peach, white apple, with a beautiful minerality. Also lighty salty, chalky aromas and some bread and brioche flavors and a hint of vanilla.

The grapes for this wine come from a small parcel of 1.1 acre in the village of Beaune. This Chardonnay offers an intense nose on yellow fruits, apricot and peach. Bright yellow color. The nose expresses an immediate sense of strong mineral and limestone influence. After aeration or decanting, it will show eventually bright citrus, bergamot, spices and an expected slight austerity. It is very expressive today, but it is easy to see that this wine still has much more to show in the future. The mouth is tight, dry, showing a bright acidity and elegant finish.
