Wine from Poysdorf

Poysdorf is a wine region located in Austria that is steeped in wine making tradition, and has been the wealth of Poysdorf for centuries. Hermann’s Schachen is the oldest vineyard in Austria, and dates back to 1338. The region gained fame when deliveries were made to the Russian Tsar in St. Petersburg 300 years ago by a horse driven wagon. The loess soil and premium location of the region allows wine makers to produce over 10 million liters of red and white wine annually. Today Poysdorf wine makers rank among the best in the world. Austria enjoys a moderate climate making it perfect for grape growing. In 2005, there were 51,213 hectares of vineyards in Austria. With the four main regions being split into 16 districts. Poysdorf produces over 200 different wines that include Rieslings, Sylvaners, Veltliners, and Zweigelts. There are 29 wine makers in Poysdorf. Austrian wines are mostly dry white and are often produced from the Gruner Veltliner grape. Nearly 30% of the wines in Austria are red and produced from Pinot Noir, Blaufränkisch, and locally grown varieties like Zweigelt. Austria is also the home to Riedel, the producers of some of the most elegant and expensive wine glasses in the world.
