Trouillard Blanc de Blancs Brut NV

The House of Trouillard has incredible holdings on the Côtes de Blancs. The vineyard's rating average 94-95, just one of the reasons the Blanc de Blancs has such incredible raciness and elegance. It is a Cuvée of eleven different Crus in the Reims Mountain, the Côtes de Blancs and the Sézannaise region and is the specialty of the house.


Trouillard Blanc de Blancs Brut NV is made of 100% Chardonnay with a green-gold color, characteristic of Chardonnay, and with fine persistent bubbles. This wine has an aroma that jumps out of the glass and is very inviting. On the nose there are seductive scents of warm almond croissant and honey, lightened by some floral notes. Crisp and refreshing in the mouth and lively with a very refined fruitiness and a touch of smokiness typical of wines from the Côtes des Blancs. The elegance and subtlety of the Chardonnay are to be especially appreciated as an aperitif, and nicely accompanies shellfish and fish. 
It has become the favorite of those who know Champagne Trouillard.

Winery: Champagne Trouillard

The Estate
The Trouillard family has been part of the Champagne business in Epernay since the 19th century with Lucien Trouillard, the founder, showing an interest in Champagne at an early age. He produced his first bottles in 1896.  When he passed away in 1966, his two sons took over the operation, followed by his grandsons Luc and Bertrand. In 1979, the House of Trouillard became one of the most important houses in the champagne business. The brothers split the activity in 1990 to focus on their own Champagne labels. However, Bertrand Trouillard shares a small cuverie with his cousins, enabling them to share the costs of production. Bertrand stresses the importance of tradition in the wine making process, but also uses modern methods of production when the quality is not undermined. Only the "jus de raisin" or first pressing is used. The wine is matured in their extensive underground caves cut from the naturally soft chalk where the temperature remains a constant 50°F.  Bertrand emphasizes the fact that the French quality laws in Champagne have been raised and the wines must spend a minimum of 15 months of bottle ageing as opposed to 12 months previously. In fact, their Extra Selection Brut spends at least two years on its lees before bottling. They produce 20,000 cases per year (quite small for Champagne) and they export 55% of the production. The house style is similar to a Blanc de Blancs: more emphasis is on the lighter fruit, thus the refreshing, crisp, yet creamy flavors. 

At Champagne Trouillard, time is their ally, and patience their secret. Bertrand Trouillard carries on the family traditions while adding his own stringency and tireless quest for perfection.

 

The Vineyards
They farm 15 hectares (37 acres), divided into 15 parcels of vines, averaging a 94-95 rating. The vineyards are located in the Montagne de Reims in Marne department, Riceys in the Aube,  and the Côtes des Blancs on the best facing slopes for maximum sunshine. Vine roots dig deep into the famous chalky limestone soils of the region, which once was under water and hence is full of sea shell fossils. The viticulture method of culture raisonnée is used, meaning pesticides and herbicides are only used when absolutely necessary.

The namesake knoll from where this fruit is sourced is part of a larger area of the Napa Valley floor in the far north of St Helena where there is topographical undulation, indicating a onetime geologically active area where there was plenty of movement and unsettled earth as the valley floor was forming millions of years ago. The benefit is wine grapes grown in an area like this display more complexity and in particular, spice notes that other valley floor sites do not inherently possess.

The invitingly beautiful, rich, lush burgundy color is your first sense engaging you to taste. The nose gives off black currant, velvety vanilla, subtle fig, and crisp bell pepper with a clean refreshing hint of grapefruit. The finish is long and beautiful with a liveliness and hint of richness, all leading you to a pleasurable lasting finish.

Thorn Clarke William Randel Cabernet is made from 100 percent Cabernet

Deep red in colour. The nose is lifted and expressive with lovely Christmas cake and mint characters along with black olives and tobacco leaf adding complexity. The palate is medium to full bodied with blueberry and hints of cassis as the primary fruit flavours. The palate has great poise with the vibrant fruit, spicy French oak and fine tannin structure all wonderfully balanced, and the wine finishes with great length of fruit.

Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from an excellent vintage. Deep, dark fruit crashes over firm, ropey tannin. To say that this will live and mature over a long period is an understatement.  Dark, deep, near saturated black-red colour with a touch of garnet on the edge. The nose is very firm and tightly bound with concentrated aromas of blackberry fruit harmoniously entwined with layers of menthol and cedar, revealing nuances of eucalypt, black olives and cassis. The aromatics build in intensity with aeration. Full-bodied, the palate features a firm and tightly concentrated heart with layers of rich and lusciously sweet, blackcurrant fruit with cassis, blackberries, menthol. mint and cedar. The palate is well-constructed with plenty of fine-grained tannin extraction forming a firm and dense core, with integrated acidity lending tension and drive, and enhancing the fruit sweetness. The structure carries the flavours to a long, lingering finish. This is a finely concentrated, firm, but fine-grained Cabernet Sauvignon with sweet blackcurrant fruit and layers of cassis, menthol, mint and cedar. Serve with lamb and beef, and with hard cheeses over the next 7-10 years. Vitanza Quadrimendo is made from 50% Sangiovese Grosso, and 50% Merlot

This wine is flavorful and complex with a good backbone of acid and tannin.
Deep red ruby color. Intense aromas with characteristic peppery notes. Dry, tannic and powerful but with a smooth body.

Total aging time was 12 months in French oak, and 12 months bottle refinement.

Wolfberger Cremant d Alsace Brut NV is made with 90 % Pinot Blanc, 10% Pinot Auxerrois.

The production of sparkling wine was already known in Alsace in the early 1900's. The Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (A.O.C.) Crémant d’Alsace began with an official decree in August 1976.
 
Pale golden color. Fine, persistent bubbles. Floral nose with a hint of spiciness, gentle fruitiness (peach, apricot), and lovely balance. Fruity and lively in the palate, it has a clean and crisp finish. This wine will suit any special occasion.

"Made the traditional method, this 90/10 blend of Pinot Blanc and Pinot Auxerrois from the Alsace with a minimum of 12 months on the lees. Showing apple and shortbread on the nose, this Crémant has a lovely creamy, textured mouth feel and firm acidity that combine to offer unusual drinking pleasure in a wine of this price. If you’re trying to decide whether to buy a Prosecco or spend a few more dollars for this wine, I’d say go for it!"

Lyrarakis Za Za Zu Sparkling NV

Lyrarakis Za Za Zu Sparkling is made from Vilana, Vidiano and Muscat of Spina

A gentle sweet kiss of peach and juicy stone fruit that excites the senses and tickles the tongue with bubbly delight followed by aromas of a spring breeze bringing scents of apple and cherry blossom with hints of baby’s breath, lily and a garden of white flowers. There is a delicate sweetness to this wine that lends itself to enjoying with friends or peaceful contemplation.

Winemaking: Hand harvested in the last week of August. Grapes are vinificated separately. 
Blending was performed using internal tasting results, choosing the ones with the best characteristics of texture and freshness. Secondary fermentation adds subtle creamy complexity and gives the wine its attractive fine gas bead and mousse.
