Wine from Washington

Washington state is the second largest wine producer in the United States and has over 43,000 acres of vineyards. Cinsault grapes were originally brought to Washington by Italian immigrants. Because of this, the Walla Walla Region. The two biggest wineries, Columbia and Chateau Ste Michelle, were founded in the 1950's, and 1960’s.

The long days filled with sunlight, along with the consistent temperatures, are what influences the vines in the vineyards.

Washington is divided vitculturally and geographically and is divided into sections that separate the Cascade Mountain chain. Western Washington produces less than 1% of the wine in Washington mainly due to the wet conditions in Tacoma, Olympia, and Seattle.

Andrew Will, Chateau Ste Michelle, and Quilceda Creek are some of the wineries that actually have wine production on the premises in the western part of Washington.

The Willridge Winery, along with other city wineries, is located in Seattle. Most of the grapes come from Eastern Washington, which is much drier and warmer.

The Columbia Valley is home to several small AVA’s that include Red Mountain, Horse Heaven Hills, Walla Wall Valley, Yakima Valle, Snipes Mountain, and Rattlesnake Hills. Two other AVA’s are pending and include the Ancient Lakes and another located near Wenatchee on the Columbia River. One of the newest AVA’s in Washington is on the western side of Central Washington.

In award of their relentless pursuit of producing perfect Cabernet Sauvignon, Quilceda Creek has received seven 100 Point ratings from Wine Advocate, three 100 Point ratings from Owen Bargreen, two 100 Point ratings from Decanter and three Top Ten Wines of the Year from Wine Spectator.

The 2021 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine for the ages. Potent aromas jump out of the glass, showing framboise candy, black tea, and a strong classic note of sandalwood. Savory cumin, sage, and garrigue round out this powerful nose. The palate is sweet and velvety, leading to an amazing crescendo of power and refinement.

 Review:

With 90% of the grapes from Champoux Vineyard and 10% from Mach One Vineyard, this blend could have been labeled Horse Heaven Hills and is certainly no less a standout than the vineyard-designate bottlings. Mint, black fruit, cinnamon, sandalwood, blueberry and floral notes form a seamless whole, wrapped in beautifully integrated, fine tannins.

Deceptively sweet aromas of strawberries, raspberries and rose petals. The Walls Curiositas Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

The Walls Curiositas Cabernet Sauvignon is made from  100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Walls Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a variety of vineyards in the Red Mountain AVA providing structure and power on the nose and palate. Extremely aromatic and super silky tannins – loads of freshness, energy, full spectrum and super complex, with that great combination of weightlessness but great texture and length.

Review:

"Lastly, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Curiositas is 100% varietal and comes from a handful of top sites on Red Mountain. Aged in 75% new French oak, it sports a dense ruby/purple hue to go with a brilliant bouquet of cassis and blackberry-like fruits as well as spicy oak, chalky mineral, spice box, and smoked tobacco. It's purity of fruit is spot on, it has full-bodied richness, a balanced, layered mouthfeel, ample textbook Red Mountain tannins, and obvious structure. I’d put this beauty up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. Hide bottles for 3-4 years if you can, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this evolve for well over two decades."

The Walls Curiositas Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

The Walls Curiositas Cabernet Sauvignon is made from  100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Extremely aromatic and super silky tannins – loads of freshness, energy, full spectrum and super complex, with that great combination of weightlessness but great texture and length.

Review:

Coming from Red Mountain and 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Cabernet Franc brought up in 80% new French oak, the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Curiositas offers more red and black fruits to go with classic Red Mountain minerality, notes of graphite and tobacco, full-bodied richness, and building, firm, yet ripe tannins. It's going to need 3-5 years of bottle age, but it’s a classic expression of this terroir.
