This estate is on a roll and the 2018 Chateau Talbot might just be the best yet. A deep purple/blue color is followed by a mammoth-sized bouquet of creme de cassis, dark chocolate, tobacco, and lead pencil. Its tannins are ripe and integrated, it has balancing acidity, and this is unquestionably another beautiful vintage for this estate.

With its impeccable balance, I’m sure it will develop gorgeously.

The 2019 Talbot has a very cohesive bouquet, "streamlined" being the operative word, before opening gradually to reveal a Pauillac-inspired aromatics, pencil shaving scents permeating the black fruit. Yet it is still unmistakably Talbot. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, creamy in texture with more depth in the middle than previous vintages (a shortcoming that, estate director Jean-Michel Laporte told me in the past he wants to address.) The great aspect of this Talbot is that it doesn't take its foot off the pedal on the finish, exerting impressive grip with that pencil lead lingering in the mouth. Superb. Expect this to land at the top of my banded score.

The 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Miocene is the best vintage of this bottling I can remember tasting. Red raspberries and black cherries come together harmoniously on the nose, accented by hints of garrigue, clove and allspice, while the full-bodied palate is richly concentrated, creamy-ripe in feel, with supple tannins and a long, lush finish. Moving to the reds, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Le Miocene has lots of red and black fruits as well as a touch of iron in its sappy garrigue and peppery, Provençal aromas and flavors. This balanced, medium-bodied, straight-up classic Châteauneuf du Pape will be loved by the Southern Rhône wine drinkers out there. It will keep for 10-12 years. The blend is 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and the rest Mourvedre, destemmed and brought up mostly in concrete tanks (no new oak). Readers will be hard pressed to find a better run estate than Domaine Grand Veneur, which has been run by the Jaume family for decades. While the top cuvées, particularly the Les Origines and Vieilles Vignes, can see a touch of new oak, this never detracts, and these wines are always loaded with Southern Rhône soul and character.

A real success, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Miocène exhales a dense, complex bouquet of cassis, dark berries, flowers, garrigue and lilac. Medium to full-bodied, layered and tense, it's enrobing and charming with a fleshy core of fruit, great freshness and a long, precise finish. This is a blend of 70% Grenache Noir, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, all destemmed and matured for 14 months in a combination of used barrels (30%) and concrete tanks. It offers a broad drinking window and should see its 20th anniversary in fine form.

It's medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, and offers fine tannins. With roughly 3,750 cases produced, this impeccably made wine will drink well for 10-15 years if well stored. Drink 2025-2040. There are few better run estates in the world than the Jaume family's Domaine Grand Veneur. Located in the northern part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and run today by brothers Christophe and Sébastien Jaume, the estate produces a quasi-modern style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape with some of their cuvées seeing some new oak. Nevertheless, these never lose their Southern Rhône soul. The SCEA des Vignobles Marcel Petit was created in 1986 by Mr. Marcel Petit with the acquisition of Château Pillebois from the Castillon Côtes-de-Bordeaux appellation.
In 1988, the vineyard grew with Châteaux Franc Lartigue and Grande Rouchonne, located in the Saint-Emilion appellation. It was that same year that the Vignobles Marcel Petit joined the Vignerons Indépendants de France.
In 1997, Mr. Marcel Petit retired, thus entrusting the vineyards to his daughter Elisabeth and his son-in-law Jean-Pierre Toxé. The vineyard then reached 22 hectares of vines, divided between Saint-Emilion and Castillon.
Then in 2019, the plots in AOC Castillon as well as the Château Pillebois were sold. The vineyard now covers 9.5 hectares of vines in AOC Saint-Emilion.
For almost 30 years now, the vineyard has continued to evolve and improve. Our know-how, passed down for two generations, is the result of collaborations with the best wine specialists, allowing us to make the most of our terroir.The continuous improvement of the techniques and the quality of our wines has always been carried out with the greatest respect for the wine traditions instilled by our ancestors.
For several years we have been committed to more environmentally friendly work.
More recently, in 2011, we joined the SME association (Environmental Management System), certification to ISO 14001 standards specializing in the good management of the environment and the biodiversity of our operations. It imposes a reduction in phytosanitary and weedkiller products, a recovery of all waste, as well as a zero impact of our cellar effluents and residues of phytosanitary products.
In 2013 we obtained the HVE 3 certification (High Environmental Value level 3). This certification, gradual from 1 to 3, attests to our commitment to respect and balance the environment and biodiversity on our farms.
Our wines are then bottled by us directly at the property. Our barrels are renewed at 30% each year in order to obtain subtle and delicate aromas in each of our vintages.
The technically well-equipped cellar allows us to monitor the vinification and aging of our wines with precision.
All the harvests of our Saint-Emilion grands crus are hand-sorted in order to keep only the best fruits in vats.
The vinifications are carried out by Jean-Pierre Toxé in close collaboration with the oenology laboratory Oenoteam and Stéphane Toutoundji, whose reputation is well established.

Les Voisins, or "the neighbors" is sourced from some of the best vineyards in Anderson Valley to create a wine that displays the region's unique terroir. Hartford Court Sevens Bench Vineyard Chardonnay is made from 100 percent Chardonnay.
True to its Carneros roots, the 2018 Sevens Bench Chardonnay carries the hallmark of the region – fruit intensity balanced by and good acidity. The aromas are driven by classic lemon drop, Meyer lemon, and lemongrass. That fruit style follows in the flavors, with the citrus focus carrying through with candied lemon drop balanced by the mineral and flint characters inherent to the region and the clonal selections. Barrel fermentation notes in the background add even more complexity to this elegant wine.

I always seem to find a tropical slant in Chardonnay from Carneros, and the 2018 Chardonnay Sevens Bench Vineyard has it in spades, with ample pineapple, honeyed peach, pear, and toasted spice-like aromas and flavors. This is another balanced, rich, medium to full-bodied Chardonnay from this estate that's loaded with character. Drink it over the coming 5-7 years

This limited release was specially selected and blended from the exceptional 2016 vintage in Paso Robles. It is both a tribute to Jerry's pioneering efforts in the region and our red wine portfolio's ultimate expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. VINEYARDS & CELLAR Beck Vineyard, in the Creston District of Paso Robles, is a unique, high elevation site that sits at 1,700 feet above the early morning fog line. Its calcareous soils and cooling afternoon winds are perfect for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet from this vineyard ripens early with excellent color, purity of fruit, and phenolic maturity. A softly spicy and noticeably earthier nose blends notes of both red and dark currant with those of plum and violet. The supple, round and velvet-textured medium-bodied flavors seem quite forward though this impression contrasts with the compact and youthfully austere finale. Note that this is sufficiently firm to benefit from at least a few years of keeping.
