Review:
Shows range, with cassis, blueberry and plum fruit and a nice snap of licorice throughout. Fleshy, but with latent drive on the finish. A concentrated, solid wine.

This estate is on a roll and the 2018 Chateau Talbot might just be the best yet. A deep purple/blue color is followed by a mammoth-sized bouquet of creme de cassis, dark chocolate, tobacco, and lead pencil. Rich, full-bodied, and powerful, it nevertheless stays pure, balanced, and elegant, with a beautiful finish. Its tannins are ripe and integrated, it has balancing acidity, and this is unquestionably another beautiful vintage for this estate.

After a top-flight 2018, the 2019 is no exception: it stands out as a major success, with volume, flesh, and a very fine energy on the finish. A promising whole that will be fascinating to watch evolve.

The youthful and energetic 2019 Talbot, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, retains grace despite its ripeness. Still bold for a St-Julien, it shows the restraint and elegance of Talbot. Brimming with black fruit, and a suave, silky texture, the savoury side has just started to peek out. With its impeccable balance, I’m sure it will develop gorgeously.

The 2019 Talbot has a very cohesive bouquet, "streamlined" being the operative word, before opening gradually to reveal a Pauillac-inspired aromatics, pencil shaving scents permeating the black fruit. Yet it is still unmistakably Talbot. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, creamy in texture with more depth in the middle than previous vintages (a shortcoming that, estate director Jean-Michel Laporte told me in the past he wants to address.) The great aspect of this Talbot is that it doesn't take its foot off the pedal on the finish, exerting impressive grip with that pencil lead lingering in the mouth. Superb. Expect this to land at the top of my banded score.

Just a hugely classic and brilliant Talbot, stretching its muscles to take its place among the great St Juliens. This is the best for me in the line-up, with clear ageing potential, liquorice and rich blueberry and blackberry fruits with waves of cinnamon, cocoa bean, clove-edged notes, and smoked coffee beans. 60% new oak for ageing. Chateau Castegens Cotes de Bordeaux Castillon is made from 80% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wine boasts an intense, deep and lively red color. The nose offers black fruit, blackberry, cigar box, licorice, some delicate and integrated oak flavors as well. The mouth is full of fruit flavors, spice and fine toasty flavors. The structure is rich, but the tannins are well integrated already. The finish is long and a slight mintiness give the wine a great length and some purity.
Pairs great with meat and vegetables on the grill.

The 2019 Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux Vieilles Vignes has a terrific nose of classic limestone-influenced red and black fruits as well as leather, truffly earth, and tobacco notes. This medium-bodied, round, balanced Castillon has ripe tannins, good mid-palate depth, and a solid finish. The blend is 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, aged 12 months in used barrels. The 2019 d'Aiguilhe has a really lovely bouquet of ample black cherry, mulberry and light floral scents, very pure and delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with cedar-infused red fruit. While not as exuberant as the aromatics, this is nicely detailed and quite poised on the finish. No, I still cannot pronounce its name, but this Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux is well worth seeking out. - Neal Martin

Black cherries, spicy oak, chalky minerality, and hints of white truffle all emerge from the 2019 Château D'Aiguilhe, an elegant, beautifully balanced, seamless 2019 from the Castillon region. Notes of candied fruit, dried figs, currants marked by their delicacy despite the sensation of great maturity. On the palate, we find this aromatic range with present but very velvety tannins.
Ageing: partially in new oak barrels, partially 1 and 2 years old barrels and stainless steel tanks.Vinification: thermo-regulated concrete tank.

Familia Zuccardi 'Finca Piedra Infinita' Supercal is made from
Appellation: Finca Piedra Infinita, IG Paraje Altamira,Valle de Uco, Mendoze
Vinification: Manually selected grapes, filling of tanks by gravity. Fermentation with native yeasts in concrete vessels without epoxy. Aging in concrete vessels. The 2020 was a very particular vintage, characterized by limited yields and a high speed of maturity, which made it one of the fastest and most challenging on record.
In the search for the purest expression of the identity of Finca Piedra Infinita vineyard, we reached this small plot of 0.73 hectares. Located on its north-east side, it shows the typical facet of Paraje Altamira soil, with large gravels and granite stones covered with calcareous material at a depth of 50 cm.
Altitude: 3,609 feet above sea level

A very young, beautiful malbec that is still a bit reductive now. Fresh herbs, white pepper, violets, iron and some ripe black cherries to the nose. Full-bodied on the palate with plenty of powerful, fine tannins. Mineral and super fine-grained. Needs time. Better after 2026.

"From the high-altitude vineyard site in Paraje Altamira, the 2020 Malbec Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal is from a specially selected site within the vineyard that has consistently shown distinct characteristics that warrant its own bottling. Hugely structured, it oozes salinity, iron, blood, dried herb, and stone, while maintaining underlying freshness. It's all structure and intensity. A fantastic achievement in Malbec and this specific sense of place. Age 25-30 years. A multi-generational winery and restaurant in the Valle de Uco under the guidance of winemaker Sebastian Zuccardi, these are mountain wines with a sense of place, expressive of the terroir of specific vineyards, parcels, soils, and altitude. In 2016, the winery was built after dividing vineyards by soil type, and it’s made entirely of concrete inside and out, with concrete vessels also used for fermentation and aging. Its highest-level wines are the Parcel Wines, made to show the uniqueness of a particular parcel of land within an estate vineyard."

Filippino Elio Barolo La Morra is made from 100% Nebbiolo.
Sourced from hillside vineyards in the La Morra commune of the Barolo zone, it pours an intense garnet red and opens with a harmonious bouquet of red rose, raspberry, cinnamon and vanilla. The palate is full, fascinating and elegant, with a firm structure and good body that reward decanting.
Winery Info: The Filippino family farms Nebbiolo across the Langhe from their base in Neive, producing classically styled Barolo and Barbaresco from small hillside parcels.
