Product Description

Dominique Piron Morgon Cote du Py is made from 100 percent Gamay.

The Morgon Cru is based in the heart of Northern Beaujolais. Côte du Py is the heart of Morgon, a little hill of very old blue stone rocks - the oldest soils of Beaujolais (around 430 millions years old), with a typical blue color.
Côte du Py has been known for centuries for being the best terroir of the village, producing long lived wines with strong structure and flavors.

VINTAGE 2016
The first half of the year was complicated : cool spring, ice storm. But a perfect second half : warm and dry. Late harvests without any rain produced beautiful grapes. A fruity, elegant and greedy vintage.

Wines of the Côte du Py are very dark, profound and dense. Classic aromas of red berries, cherry, kirsh. Fruity, structured and mineral in the mouth with graphite flavors and spicy notes of black and white pepper. Wine can age up to 10 years.

Hand picked grapes are sorted manually and destemmed for 50 to 70%. Fermentation starts in concrete tanks and lasts for 18-25 days with remontages and pigeages. Then after pressurage starts the aging, for 2/3 in concrete tanks, and 1/3 in recent French oak barrels with batonages on fine lies only. After 10 month we do the blending, keeping only the best cuvees and best barrels, and do the bottling.

Pairs well with red meat like beef, duck and game (Hare, Dear, Wild Pork,…), cheses.

The oldest known ancestor of Dominique Piron, Etienne Bailly, was born around 1590 in Morgon, under the reign of King Henry III, in full wars of religion. 3 centuries of family Bailly and Piron followed one another, producing and selling wine from Gamay to Morgon.

Today, a new story is being written. With know-how, roots and terroirs, Dominique Piron has created a Domain among the leaders of the region.

At Maison Piron, there is no "recipe", but a multitude of possibilities and combinations, depending on the knowledge of the terroirs, the appellation, and the purpose. Grapes of quality that are ripe and representative of their soil, a severe sorting if necessary, a partial destemming depending on the maturity of the stalks, some "pigeages" and pumping over, lengths of fermentation depending on terroirs, appellations, and vintages. Few technical interventions. The major idea is "permanent adaptation to the elements". Piron wines are traditional. They express the soil from which they come from. It is a compromise between the search for the best tannins and the preservation of finesse, elegance and purity. A moderate maturation in barrels brings roundness without being overwhelming.

In a vineyard with difficult terrain− 30% steep slopes and a virtual patchwork of parcels, Dominique Piron is engaged in sustainable winegrowing. On winegrowing land filled with old broken-down granite and schist, the watchwords are natural balance and biodiversity.
For vinification, their goal is to create terroir wines, wines of character, that remain fruity, subtle and elegant.

Gamay is the heart and soul of Beaujolais crus. 
A cross between the Pinot Noir and Gouais Blanc varieties, Gamay was originally imported from Croatia by the Huns in the 4th century. Gamay is a delicate variety and it is either excellent or nothing at all. At any rate, Gamay is a quite remarkable variety because it can either be enjoyed young for its fruitiness and elegance, or allowed to age, developing the structure and mineral qualities so appreciated by connoisseurs.

Morgon wines are solid but never hard. They are racy and elegant. They always have a slight hint of black cherry (some would say kirsch, as the wine ages), and bright spicy notes. With their great structure, Morgon wines keep very well. Morgon, a sure value.

The 2019 My Favorite Neighbor features a complex nose of red cherry, current and raspberry along with wild herbs, violets, and just a hint of toasted marshmallow. On the palate, generous flavors of black cherry, ripe plum, and fig compote is joined by notes of medium roast coffee and creme brulee. The extremely long and mineral finish is characterized by a hefty structure and luxurious, silky tannins.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is more elegant and focused, with medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of cassis, redcurrants, green tobacco, and cedary spice. I love its texture, it has ripe, polished tannins, plenty of sweet fruit, and a great, great finish, all while staying in a relatively compact, and again, elegant package. As I’ve written in the past, it would cost three to four times the price from Napa. It’s worth noting the change in appellation from Paso Robles to San Luis Obispo County, which probably allows for a wider range of fruit.

Bright ruby red, with fascinating transparency. The nose is fragrant and fresh in the memories of crispy red fruit. The palate is enveloped by a great finesse, in which the tannin is soft and blended to the middle body and to the fruity taste.

Enticing aromas of graphite, forest floor, menthol and tobacco mingle with whiffs of rhubarb pie in this Pinot Nero. A pale yellow color with discreet green reflections. On the nose, it develops delicate honey and vanilla aromas. Luccianus Amphore Lussac St. Emilion is made from 100% Cabernet Franc.

Luccianus is the name of Gallo-Roman origin designating the town of Lussac and its vineyard dating from the 4th century. This 100% Cabernet Franc is produced from the estate oldest vines of 100 years of age and is a return to ancestral aging techniques. The amphora aging gives out a very expressive wine with a superb aromatic radiance and very silky tannins all without a woody note.

The wine shows a beautiful deep purple color. The nose is complex and rich with intense notes of fruits and spices. The palate is round and powerful with silky tannins.

Jean Arthaud Morgon Cote du Py 2020

Jean Arthaud Morgon Cote du Py is made from 100 percent Gamay.


In the heart of the Crus area of Beaujolais, wines of “Morgon” AOC are often described as best representing the character of their terroir. The appellation is dominated by a hill called Mont du Py. Its soil of decomposed schist gives typical aromas to the wines. French winemakers usually describe this particularity in a verb: “morgonner”, be like a Morgon. This Morgon Côte du Py is produced on this hill peaking at 300m above sea-level. The selected parcels are very sunny, on south-oriented steep slopes.

Deep ruby in color, this wine offers a complex nose, mineral and fruity. It mingles aromas of ripe raspberry, black and morello cherries with hints of flint, ink, clove and black pepper. The highly vibrant palate has a sound underlying structure which is powerful yet velvety, thanks to tannins which, despite mellowing, are still very perceptible. This is a stylish wine bearing the hallmarks of its terroir with a long and spicy finish.

This wine has also a very good ageing potential and will start to develop some secondary aromas after 5 or 6 years if kept properly in a wine cellar.

Slight filtration before bottling, no fining. 85% of the wine was aged in cement tank, and 15% of the wine was aged during 6 months in 2-year-old French Oak 228-liter barrels. 

Malolactic fermentation.
Temperature controlled skin contact maceration for 12-14 days. 
The wine is a blend of 50% full cluster fermentation and 50% destemmed.
Soil is decomposed schist and very old volcanic rocks.
Average age of the vines is 55 years old.

Xavier Vignon Cotes du Rhone Rouge Cuvee Vieilles Vignes Organic is made from 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre, 5% Syrah and 5% Cinsault.

The diversity of terroirs used in this blend allows this wine to combine freshness and balance.

We used Clay and limestone plots located on the hillside where old Grenache naturally express roasted hints. We could obtain in this wine empyreumatical hints without the use of barrels. These plots particular soils and orientation allowed grapes to reach an optimal level of ripeness while conserving a good acidity level.

We also integrated grapes coming from plots located on red rocky clay soils also named “garrigues”. These big red stone are restituting heat coming from the sun at night and bring power and structure to the wine.
Also the blend features vines coming from sandy clays, which are light and rather fresh soils: this allowed the wine to maintain a freshness and vivacity.

Bouquet of cassis, blueberries, lavender, cured meats, and graphite. It's deep, rich, medium to full-bodied, and has a great finish. The Mourvèdre keeps this tight and fresh.

Chateau Cabrieres Cotes du Rhone Rouge Vieilles Vignes is made from 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah.

Château Cabrières’ Côtes du Rhône vineyard is located south of Orange, on the edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The area of ​​the vineyard is 1.53 hectares. The soil is comprised of clay-limestone mixed with pebbles.

Segries Clos Jean Alesi Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2017

Segries Clos Jean Alesi Cotes du Rhone Rouge  is made from 1/3 each of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.

This wine was originally called Segries Lanzac Clos Hermitage Cotes du Rhone Rouge  

This 3.5 hectare vineyard, located in the famous “Quartier de la Chartreuse de Villeneuve-les-Avignon”, has been owned by the Formula 1 race car driver Jean Alesi since 1995. It is managed by Château de Ségriès.

This wine is a blend of 33% Grenache, 33% Syrah, and 33% Mourvedre sourced from 40-year-old vines. It was fermented in concrete vats then aged for nine months in 5% new oak barrels. The wine is a very grapey color in the glass. There is a light nose of tightly packed black fruit, dried herbs, pepper, and licorice. In the mouth there are tight-grained blue fruit, fine, powerful tannins, and a little strawberry flavor breaking loose. With air the wine reveals pencil and pepper flavors along with the structure for aging.

Yield: 40 hl/ha
Age of the vines: 40 years. 
Vinification: 21 days skin maceration in temperature controlled concrete vats
Ageing: 9 months oak aging -5% new French oak from Seguin Moreau cooper and 95% of 1 year old barrels.

Delicious with roast meat, grilled vegetables, strong cheese and chocolate desserts.


Duckhorn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain Napa 2017

Lush, energetic and intense, this gorgeous 2017 Napa Valley Cabernet begins with aromas of blackberry, huckleberry and chocolate, as well as hints of mint, cardamom, clove and graham cracker. On the palate it displays lovely brightness, with firm, resolved tannins framing flavors of boysenberry and black currant. As it evolves in the glass, subtle sweet and savory notes are revealed, carrying the wine to a long, focused finish.

Review:

This is a Napa Valley cabernet that does everything right. Renee Ary blends fruit from Duckhorn’s estate with grapes from growers, including 12 percent merlot to point up the luscious texture, aging it for 16 months in French oak barrels (half of them new), without the wine becoming overtly oaky. It’s a wine of elegance and restraint, delicious in its sweet purple-plum intensity, succulent in its earthy tannins. Those mineral tannins retreat into the finish, allowing the savory fruit to move in. Accessible now, this will only improve with a few years in bottle.
