The nose on this luxury-level bottling is pure and refreshing, offering aromas of black cherry, loamy soil, dried mint and caramel-laced coffee. The 2020 was a very particular vintage, characterized by limited yields and a high speed of maturity, which made it one of the fastest and most challenging on record.
In the search for the purest expression of the identity of Finca Piedra Infinita vineyard, we reached this small plot of 0.73 hectares. Located on its north-east side, it shows the typical facet of Paraje Altamira soil, with large gravels and granite stones covered with calcareous material at a depth of 50 cm.

The Force Majeure estate Syrah is cultivated in a combination of the 8 soil types that exist in the vineyard, with most of it being planted in very steep, very rocky locations, but some also planted in deeper, loamier soils.
The estate Syrah typically exhibits a broad spectrum of black, blue and red fruits, dried herbs and jasmine, fennel, smoked meats and crushed rock along with very fine tannins, great length, balance and complexity.

Co-fermented with 2% Viognier, the 2020 Syrah Red Mountain Estate reveals a deed purple/plum color as well as gorgeous aromatics of red and black fruits, chalky minerality, ground pepper, and smoked meats. This rich, full-bodied, concentrated, structured Syrah has plenty of mid-palate density, building tannins, and a great finish. It needs 2-4 years of bottle age, but this brilliant Syrah will have two decades of overall longevity.

Fresh and fruit-driven, the Estate Reserve is comprised of a mixture of clones from the Aegrina estate in the cool, west-facing hills of the McMinnville AVA. One winemaker, Rob Brittan, began this wine and finished by Burgundian Francois Millet. It shows generous red fruits, fresh cranberries, raspberries and a touch of piquant blood orange. The palate flashes savoury herbs, tart red fruits and sour Montmorency cherries carrying the finish.

Reynvaan Family Vineyards was founded in 2004 by Mike and Gale Reynvaan in Washington’s Walla Walla Valley, with son Matt Reynvaan as winemaker, and has become one of the most sought-after names in the state for its Rhône-inspired, estate-grown reds. The Foothills Reserve is a barrel selection from the family’s high-elevation Foothills in the Sun Vineyard, planted in 2008 on loess soils over deep basalt in the foothills of the Blue Mountains.
Walla Walla Valley Syrah is prized for two very different terroirs: the basalt-cobblestone Rocks District, known for savory, meaty, olive-and-mineral character, and the wind-swept loess hillsides that lend structure, freshness and lift. The Foothills site sits among the latter, giving a Syrah of both power and energy.

A total masterclass, the 2021 ‘Foothills Reserve’ is a barrel selection wine that comes from the Reynvaan’s high elevation estate Foothills In The Sun Vineyard. The site is set on Loess soils with deep basalt deposits and I have been writing about the potential of this site for more than a decade. Today, wines from this high-elevation location are every bit as good as those from their Rocks District vineyard. Hoisin sauce, beef drippings, menthol, and shades of wild blackberry all combine on the nose. The palate is utterly seamless with serious tension, weight and mouth-watering acidity. It offers La Landonne levels of flavor complexity, yielding blood orange zest notes alongside red cherry candy, cigar ash, wet stone and pipe tobacco that all brilliantly meld together on the palate. Showing seriously good flavor and aromatic range, enjoy this simply stunning Syrah now and over the next ten plus years to come. Drink 2023-2037.

The 2021 Syrah Foothills Reserve (100% Syrah) is more powerful, with a darker core of black and blue fruits, ground pepper, smoked meat, and floral, rose petal-like nuances. Give it just a year or two and enjoy bottles over the following 15 years.

Halter Ranch Vineyard Ancestor Estate Reserve is made from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Malbec, 17% Petit Verdot,
Their flagship wine, Ancestor is their Bordeaux-style reserve blend, and an homage to the Ancestor Tree, the largest Coast Live Oak on record. The 2019 Ancestor showcases aromas of red currant and dark chocolate along with subtle hints of cinnamon and clove. The entry is soft and rich with layered flavors of blueberry, blackberry, and dark cherry. The mid- palate is thick and mouth coating with balanced acid. The finish is framed by integrated tannins and delicate flavors of caramel and truffle.
Pair with roasted meats, reduction sauces, and hearty stews.
Review:
Cabernet is more than half of this wine, with Petit Verdot and Malbec making up the rest. Rich and ripe with deep black plums and plenty of Christmas spice with just a touch of evergreen tips freshness. The palate is lushly fruited, rich with blackberry jam, chocolate and cherries and a touch of smoky cedar to finish. Rich, redolent fruits and dusty cocoa powder mark the finish deep and long-lasting. (CP)

All 256 acres of Estate vineyards are 100% CCOF certified organic. Twenty different grape varieties are planted on the steepest southern-facing slopes on our property, with ideal southern sun exposure and an elevation reaching 1,950 feet. The certified organic Estate vineyards makes up only a small piece of the Halter Ranch estate. We are dedicated to preserving a diverse environment and mitigating the effects of a monoculture. With less than 10% of our property dedicated to farming and building development, the remainder is left to the natural landscape, which includes oak woodland and migratory wildlife corridors.
Our production facility utilizes a multi-level gravity flow system that allows our winemaker to handle the fruit in the gentlest, most natural way possible while avoiding the pumping of stems and seeds. Integral to our facility’s sustainability are 20,000 square feet of wine caves, natural lighting, and nighttime air-cooling. A natural mass of hillside limestone, combined with the cave’s concrete walls, stabilizes our wine at the perfect 58º temperature and optimizes humidity for storage. This wine is the result of extraordinary weather conditions. The first cuvée was produced in 1992 when violent storms and floods affected the region (especially Vaison la Romaine). The following days were radiant and accompanied by Mistral winds. We could then continue to harvest or more precisely harvest what remained of a rotten crop - but a noble rotten crop!
Following our first involuntary test of 1992, we wanted to reproduce this wine but we had to wait until 1995 to isolate the parcels that were capable of producing this noble rot. Unfortunately, the "noble" phenomenon does not occur every year despite late harvests (October 15).
The resulting wine is offers aromas of small red berries (cherries, raspberries), liquorice, fig, honey, fruit brandy and plum. It is elegant, supple and smooth on the palate with a firm, generous and suave structure. A beautiful length on spices and cherry.
This Grenache nectar marries will with dishes such as pan-fried foie gras in honey and fig preserve, leg of lamb with preserved fruits accompanied by local cereal "epautre" or other sweet and sour dishes.
Review:
Not yet bottled, the 2020 Vacqueyras Grenat Noble should also be outstanding. Based mostly on Grenache, but with a small amount of Mourvèdre, it has a Provençal bouquet of red and black fruits, dried garrigue, toasted nuts, and spice. Rich, medium-bodied, and nicely textured, with a great finish, I'd be thrilled to have a bottle on the dinner table. It will keep through 2032.

The 2020 Vacqueyras Grenat Noble stands out from the crowd. It blends 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre grapes that were harvested relatively late for the purpose of over-ripeness. This 2020 red is laced with expressive raspberry jam, strawberry compote and melted licorice aromas. Hints of mint and dried herbs add more contrast. Supple and round, a gently tannic structure and bright acidity hold everything together. This is a terrific Vacqueyras worth seeking out.

This wine is lovely in juicy red fruit, dried herb and hints of allspice, the tannin structure firm and giving. Offering refinement and structure, it shows nuances of black currant, cherry and toasted oak. This will do well in the cellar.

Drink this impeccably made Cabernet over the coming 10-12 years or more. Drink 2025-2037.
