Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is made from 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, 5% divers.
In contrast to Chaupin, which is made from old-vine Grenache on sandy soils, the cuvée Vieilles Vignes is from old vines of Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah along with smaller percentages of other permitted varieties that are grown in these old vineyards. The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes also saw some stems (the estate started keeping some stems with the 2016 vintage) and was 75 destemmed, with the blend being 70 Grenache, 20 Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah, Cinsault, and Terret Noir. As usual, it’s a more powerful, black-fruited wine comparted to the Cuvée Chaupin and has lots of crème de cassis, liquid violet, crushed stone, woodsmoke, and peppery herbs. It displays the vintage’s purity and freshness yet brings the concentration as well as the structure. I’ll be shocked if it’s not in the handful of top wines in the vintage. 96-98 Points

Not as rich or concentrated as I was expecting, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes still delivers ample layers of dark fruit, hints of cola, mint and spice elements. It's full-bodied, silky and long, but it looks to fall short of the quality heights reached by some other recent vintages.

Not terribly dark in the glass, but this has real power and concentration yet no heaviness. It's very well judged, not too much, no over-extraction, just a really classic Châteauneuf imprint that's balanced and charming without being forced or exaggerated. It's young but drinkable already, and will age well too. That's balance for you. From very old vines, fermented in concrete, matured for 12 months in foudres and demi-muids.

Cazaux Vacqueyras Blanc Vieilles Vignes 50% Clairette, 30% Roussanne and 20% Viognier
The wine has a beautiful golden color.
The aromas are rich and
exotic with mango, almonds, toast, lemon, pineapple white flowers and
papaye. These aromas will develop to honey, butter and pear after ageing
for a few years.
The finish is long, citrusy and toasty.
Terroir: Slopes of sandy soil or grey limestone.
Yield: 25 -30 hl/ha
Age of the vines: 70 years old minimum. The oldest are around 90 years old.
The
grapes are pressed pneumatically after a few hours contact with the
skins.The must is kept at 20°c during the alcoholic fermentation to
optimise the aromas and respect the wine’s suppleness.
Barrel fermented an aged in 228-liter French Oak barrel for 12 months with regular stirrings of the lees.
MaloLactic Fermentation also in barrel.
Enjoy this wine with rich dish, river fish or poultry cooking in creamy sauce. Delicious with a mushroom risotto.
Review:
Coming from older vines and a smaller production release, the 2023 Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes is tighter and more inward, with brilliant darker cherry and berry fruits supported by ground pepper, crushed stone, and subtle Provençal garrigue. Based on 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre, it's medium to full-bodied and has a focused, concentrated mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It needs 2-3 years of bottle age but is a brilliant Vacqueyras that I would be thrilled to have in the cellar. It will have 10-15 years of longevity. Drink 2028-2043.

An assemblage of 45% Grenache, 45% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah, the 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes follows the domaine's formula of maturing the Grenache in concrete tanks, while the Mourvèdre and Syrah go into barrel (new in this case). With the elevated Mourvèdre component, scents of truffle and tree bark accent black cherries and plums on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is concentrated and tannic from start to finish. Give it some time to mellow, as the velvety, mocha-tinged finish suggests it will evolve in a softer direction.

The flagship from this reference point estate is the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes, which is based on 45% each Grenache and Mourvèdre with a dose of Syrah that spent 16 months in new oak and concrete tank. It brings more richness than just about every other wine in the vintage and has a deep ruby/plum hue as well as a ripe, concentrated, medium to full-bodied style revealing gorgeous blackberry and subtle cassis fruits, polished, ripe tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and terrific complexity in its licorice, peppery garrigue, and roasted meat-like aromas and flavors. Deep inky color in the glass. Aromas of raspberry, cherry and hints of vanilla round out the nose. Medium to full-bodied and very well structured with ripe chewy tannins. Flavors of peppery humus, cherry and hints of leather flow towards a lengthy & spicy finish.

Unfiltered and minimum use of SO2.

Even better, the 2016 Faugères Vieilles Vignes checks in as 50% Mourvèdre and 25% each of Carignan and Syrah, brought up in 80% tanks and 20% French oak. Deeper colored, with a powerful bouquet of dark fruits, plums, crushed rocks, and licorice, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, loads of fruit, a stacked mid-palate, and a great finish. Les Noisetiers is a combination of specific lots from within Kistler’s vineyards of designated quality that are situated in far western Sonoma County, near the coast. They began creating Les Noisetiers upon noting that there was an inherent mineral tone which they loved in the lots from their vineyards planted in these coastal sandy Gold Ridge soils.
A classic balance of layered, juicy fruit and mineral backbone. It is delicious wine, with white flowers and stone fruit aromatics leading to a full bodied, juicy core, loaded with flavors of peach, apricots, pineapple and pear.

Kistler’s 2023 Chardonnay Les Noisetiers is rich and creamy in the glass, not to mention quite sophisticated. In this vintage, some of the nutty character (after which the wine is named) is more subtle than in past years. Lemon confit, white flowers and tangerine oil all grace the palate, building into an understated yet beautifully resonant finish. The 2023 is driven by strong citrus and floral inflections rather than the almond/hazelnut profile often found in this bottling.
