This small six-hectare domaine located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet is making rapid strides. Philippe Pernot (a scion of the Paul Pernot dynasty) launched the Pernot-Belicard label in 2009 after marrying Miss Belicard, daughter of Mr Belicard (who owned vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet). In the vineyards, Philippe cultivates the soils, de-buds aggressively and takes pains to retain his old vines in good health. The grapes are harvested by hand, with Philippe typically among the earlier pickers in the village. Since 2014, there's more sorting, the grapes passing over a shaker table before being whole cluster pressed. Initially, the wines were bottled to make room for the new vintage, but Philippe, evidently an inquiring mind, felt that something was missing: now, the wines stay in barrel until August, but spend an additional three to six months in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks with the fine lees. The result are wines that are more integrated and complete. These are already very good wines, and Philippe possesses some enviable parcels, but it is his desire to refine and improve that marks this out as an estate to watch.

Review:
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Kingly Vineyard is endowed with tremendous richness and concentration. It emerges from the best spots within Block 5, which is a bit more protected from the elements. The 2018 is a bit closed today, but it has a lot of promise. Time in the glass brings out layers of inky dark fruit and the savory, minerally notes that are such signatures. This potent Calistoga Cabernet needs time to shine, but it is impressive today just the same.

Falletto di Bruno Giacosa Barolo is made from 100 percent Nebbiolo.
The 2020 growing season began with an early budbreak following a mild winter with regular rain and above-average temperatures. A steady, well-distributed water supply and temperatures at seasonal averages allowed the vines to move through every phenological phase evenly, and dry conditions kept fungal pressure (oidium and peronospora) firmly under control. The result is a vintage of beautifully balanced, mid-weight Barolo prized for grace, translucence and early appeal.
The fruit comes from the Falletto vineyard in the village of Serralunga d'Alba. In most vintages this is the most approachable of the Giacosa Barolos, showing the estate's sweetly fruited Nebbiolo in classic style.

The depth and beauty of this are so enticing and attractive that you want to drink the whole bottle. It's medium- to full-bodied with cherries, strawberries and white truffles. Juicy and precise, with a real presence and complexity as it opens. Best after 2027, but already gorgeous.
